2026 Toyota Highlander configurations at a glance
Toyota’s current features page displays these base MSRPs and city/highway estimates. Prices are displayed base MSRPs, not transaction prices, and fuel-economy figures are manufacturer estimates rather than observed results. Equipment can vary with options and the specific vehicle.

These are Toyota’s displayed figures on its 2026 Highlander features page, accessed October 4, 2026. Toyota’s September 5, 2025 model announcement gave different initial starting prices: $45,270 for gas XLE and $47,020 for Hybrid XLE, excluding the dealer processing and handling fee. The announcement prices and current feature-page prices have different dates and contexts; check the current listing and dealer quote for your location.
Gas or hybrid: which powertrain fits?
The gas Highlander uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated by Toyota at 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. AWD is standard, the manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy is 24 mpg, and maximum towing capacity is up to 5,000 pounds.

The hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor system for 243 net combined horsepower. Electronic on-demand AWD is standard. Toyota estimates 35 mpg combined and lists maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. Toyota’s estimates and capacities are manufacturer figures, not independent test results; confirm the rating and payload and tongue-weight limits for the individual vehicle and trailer.
Choose gas when towing capacity or the turbo powertrain leads
The gas models have the higher published maximum towing capacity and a turbocharged engine. Gas XLE is the least expensive gas grade on Toyota’s current displayed price list. The gas grades all show the same 21/28-mpg city/highway estimate on that page.

Choose hybrid when fuel economy matters most
The hybrid’s displayed fuel-economy estimates are substantially higher, but its starting price is higher than the gas XLE’s current displayed base MSRP. Whether that difference makes sense depends on your driving distance, fuel prices and actual purchase price; there is no single payback period without those inputs. Hybrid grades are limited to XLE, Limited and Platinum.
What changes as you move up the grades?
XLE: the entry point for each powertrain
Gas XLE is the lowest-priced gas configuration shown by Toyota. Its listed features include SofTex-trimmed front- and second-row seats, heated front seats, a hands-free liftgate and wireless charging. Hybrid XLE is the hybrid entry grade, and Toyota highlights its 8-inch multimedia display and availability with seating for up to eight. Verify the actual second-row layout on the vehicle you are considering.

XSE: the sport-oriented gas model
XSE is available with the gas powertrain, not the hybrid. Its distinction is styling and chassis tuning: Toyota lists a sport-oriented exterior, 20-inch black alloy wheels and sport-tuned suspension. It does not have a higher stated engine output than the other gas grades.
Limited: a comfort and multimedia step up
Limited is offered with either powertrain. Toyota lists leather-trimmed seating on both, with heated and ventilated front seats and a 12.3-inch gauge cluster among the gas Limited features. The listed multimedia package includes a 12.3-inch screen and 11-speaker JBL audio; check the equipment sheet for the exact model and powertrain.

Platinum: the top grade for visibility and added amenities
Platinum is available in gas and hybrid form. Both versions include a panoramic roof, panoramic-view monitor and head-up display in Toyota’s listed features. The Hybrid Platinum additionally lists heated second-row seats.

The Highlander seats seven with second-row captain’s chairs. It can seat eight when equipped with an available second-row bench on specified grades. Seating configuration depends on grade and vehicle equipment, so confirm that the actual vehicle has the bench if eight seats are essential.

Toyota lists up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second and third rows folded. That is a manufacturer-listed maximum; available cargo room depends on how the seats are arranged.
Which 2026 Highlander should you choose?
- For the lowest displayed gas-grade price: start with gas XLE, then confirm its actual equipment and dealer price.
- For sport styling and suspension tuning: compare gas XSE with XLE and decide whether its listed changes justify the price step.
- For upgraded seats and multimedia: compare Limited grades, checking the equipment sheet for the powertrain you want.
- For panoramic-view and head-up-display features: look at Platinum; Hybrid Platinum also lists heated second-row seats.
- For better manufacturer-estimated fuel economy: compare hybrid grades against the gas model using your expected mileage, fuel prices and actual purchase quotes.
- For the higher published maximum towing capacity: the gas lineup is rated up to 5,000 pounds versus up to 3,500 pounds for hybrid. Confirm the particular vehicle’s limits and your trailer’s loaded weight.
- For eight seats: shop for a vehicle fitted with the second-row bench, rather than relying on the grade name alone.
Check availability and equipment before buying
Toyota notes that not all options and packages are available separately or in every region and advises contacting a dealer about current availability or a special order. Compare the window sticker or vehicle equipment list with the features you need, and verify the current local price, seating layout and towing rating for the specific Highlander.
Toyota describes the 2026 lineup this way: “For 2026, Highlander makes All Wheel Drive standard on gas models and a simplified grade structure, with feature-packed models available in four gas and three hybrid grades.”
