For a modern used sedan, focus first on the 2012–2017 seventh generation and then the 2018–2024 eighth generation, while treating 2007–2011—especially four-cylinder 2007 and 2008 cars—as the main caution range. A well-maintained, inspected Camry can be a better purchase than a newer neglected one, so verify the VIN, engine, service history and condition of every individual car.
Which Toyota Camry years are most reliable?
There is no single universally best Camry year. Autoblog senior editor Karl Furlong wrote on August 10, 2025 that the Camry has been exceptionally trustworthy over the years, making one definitive winner difficult to select. Its cross-check of Car Complaints, J.D. Power and NHTSA data identified these standout used years:
| Model year | Why it is a standout | Best buying approach |
|---|---|---|
| 1995 | Lower-than-average complaints and recalls in the cited comparison | Condition, rust, prior repairs and maintenance matter more than age alone |
| 2001 | Lower-than-average complaints and recalls | Have an older-car specialist inspect suspension, seals and corrosion |
| 2006 | End of the generally reliable fifth generation and lower complaint/recall levels | Confirm engine, transmission service and evidence of regular oil changes |
| 2013 | Early seventh-generation year with a strong reliability record in the comparison | Check accident history, maintenance records and recall completion |
| 2017 | Late seventh-generation year and a standout in the comparison | Often the best balance of modern equipment, proven powertrains and used pricing |
| 2019–2020 | Standout eighth-generation years with lower complaint and recall levels in the cited analysis | Verify every recall by VIN and inspect electronic and driver-assistance systems |
The cited analysis found that Camrys with J.D. Power ratings available from 2007 scored above 80 out of 100, reinforcing that reliability is a long-running strength rather than a trait limited to one redesign.
Best Camry generations for a used purchase
2012–2017 (seventh generation): the most practical modern target
This generation combines a newer platform with well-established 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6 engines. The 2013 and 2017 model years are the clearest standouts in the year-by-year comparison, but the broader 2012–2017 range is a sensible search area when a car has complete maintenance records and passes an inspection.

2018–2024 (eighth generation): broadly strong, with VIN checks required
The eighth-generation Camry has a generally strong reliability reputation. The 2019 and 2020 years are particularly attractive used choices. Do not skip a recall search on a 2018: the cited analysis reports eight recalls, including three involving fuel-pump failures. Recall status is vehicle-specific and can change, so confirm completion using the car’s VIN with Toyota or the appropriate national recall database before buying.
2002–2006 (fifth generation): older but generally dependable
The fifth generation is identified as a generally reliable generation, and 2006 is a standout year. Age introduces risks that a model-year ranking cannot capture, including corrosion, neglected fluids, worn suspension components and deferred timing-belt or accessory work where applicable. A detailed inspection is essential.

1997–2001 (fourth generation): durable examples exist, but age dominates
The 1997–2001 generation is also considered generally reliable, with 2001 singled out in the comparison. At this age, prior ownership and storage conditions can outweigh the generation’s reputation. A low-mileage car with long periods of sitting is not automatically safer than a higher-mileage example that has been serviced consistently.
What Camry years should I avoid?
2007–2011: the main caution range
The sixth generation is the principal trouble area in the cited complaint and recall analysis. The 2007–2009 cars have the most NHTSA complaints in that review, and avoiding the generation where possible is recommended.

2007–2008 four-cylinder cars: investigate oil consumption first
Many complaints concern excessive oil consumption in the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE four-cylinder. The reported association is a piston-ring design that can allow oil to be burned. Ask the seller for documented oil-consumption tests, repair invoices and records showing how often the oil level needed topping up. A clean inspection today does not prove the engine has never consumed oil, so missing history is a meaningful risk.
Other sixth-generation complaints
- Melting or deteriorating dashboard materials
- Door-lock faults
- Interior-accessory and electrical failures
A V6 can avoid the cited four-cylinder oil-consumption issue, but it does not make every 2007–2011 Camry safe by default. Inspect the specific vehicle, review its records and price in the possibility of age-related repairs.

Is a 2017 Camry reliable?
Yes. The 2017 Camry is one of the strongest used-year picks in the cited Autoblog comparison and is part of the dependable 2012–2017 generation. Its appeal is practical: a proven 2.5-liter four-cylinder or 3.5-liter V6, a newer platform than the 2000s cars and enough age for recurring problems to be better understood. Condition, accident damage, maintenance and mileage still determine whether a particular 2017 is a good buy.

They are among the most attractive late-model used Camrys. Both years are identified as standouts for lower complaint and recall levels, and the eighth-generation design is broadly strong. Check the VIN for open and completed recalls, confirm software and maintenance updates, and test all safety, infotainment and climate-control functions before purchase.

Which Camry generation lasts the longest?
No available comparison establishes one generation as a guaranteed longevity champion. The fourth (1997–2001), fifth (2002–2006), seventh (2012–2017) and eighth (2018–2024) generations are all described as generally reliable. For most shoppers today, the seventh generation is the most defensible target because it offers mature, conventional powertrains at used-car prices. An exceptionally maintained fifth-generation car can outlast a neglected seventh-generation car, while the eighth generation has less long-term used-car evidence simply because many examples are newer.
How current reliability data should influence your decision
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study recorded 202 problems per 100 vehicles as the industry average and 162 problems per 100 vehicles for Toyota, which ranked third among mass-market brands. The study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. These are brand- and industry-level results, not a guarantee for a particular Camry.
Consumer Reports describes a current reliability-history database covering about 380,000 vehicles and evaluates 20 potential trouble spots. Its current Camry page rates the 2024 and 2025 Camry as more reliable than other cars from their respective model years. Long-term evidence for a new redesign is necessarily less mature than the evidence for an older generation, so treat those ratings as encouraging rather than proof of decades-long durability.
How to compare two used Camrys
- Confirm the exact year and generation. Use the year ranges above as a starting filter, not a guarantee.
- Identify the engine and transmission. This is especially important for 2007–2011 cars, where the four-cylinder oil-consumption concern changes the risk calculation.
- Run a VIN recall and complaint check. Record both open and completed recalls; do not rely on a seller’s statement that a recall was handled.
- Review maintenance evidence. Look for regular oil services, fluid work, cooling-system repairs, documented oil-consumption history and invoices rather than a generic “serviced” description.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to check leaks, underbody corrosion, accident repairs, suspension, brakes, tires, transmission behavior and warning lights.
- Compare total ownership cost. Include purchase price, immediate maintenance, insurance, fuel, taxes and likely repairs. A newer car is not automatically cheaper if it has poor records or deferred work.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing a model year without checking the engine configuration
- Assuming a completed-looking dashboard means recalls are closed
- Equating low mileage with good maintenance
- Skipping an inspection because the car is from a “reliable” year
- Ignoring rust, flood damage, collision repairs or long gaps in service records
The Bottom Line
For the safest used-Camry search, start with a well-documented 2012–2017 car—especially a 2013 or 2017—or a 2019–2020 model. Be cautious with 2007–2011, particularly four-cylinder 2007–2008 cars, and let VIN recall verification, service records and an independent inspection decide between finalists.
