For a new 2026 SUV, several models have a starting MSRP below $50,000, including the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V Hybrid, Mazda CX-50, Honda Passport, Hyundai Palisade Hybrid and Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid. That does not mean every trim qualifies: some models’ listed ranges extend above the cap. The prices below are starting or trim MSRPs—not estimated out-the-door totals—and local inventory, options, dealer adjustments, destination charges, taxes and registration can change what you pay.

What “under $50,000” means in this guide

A vehicle qualifies here when its cited starting price is below $50,000. For the RAV4, Toyota also publishes prices for several individual trims, all below that threshold. For the other models, a starting price alone does not establish that every configuration is under budget. In particular, Car and Driver’s displayed ranges for the Passport, Palisade Hybrid and Grand Highlander Hybrid extend above $50,000.

Manufacturer figures are labeled as manufacturer prices or estimates; Car and Driver figures are that publication’s displayed prices and assessments. The sources do not provide a complete, same-trim comparison of final local purchase costs. Get a quote for the exact trim and options in your area before treating it as within budget.

2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid: strongest editorial pick

Car and Driver ranks the CR-V Hybrid first on its displayed under-$50,000 list, gives it a 10/10 rating and shows a starting price of $37,180 with 35–40 mpg combined. Its assessment highlights the hybrid powertrain’s efficiency and performance. Those are Car and Driver’s figures and judgment, not a universal ranking or a direct comparison of every trim.

Honda’s build-and-price page lists a $35,630 starting MSRP and 43/36 mpg city/highway for the 2026 CR-V Hybrid. The two sources show different starting prices and fuel-economy formats, so they should not be combined into a single figure. Use Honda’s figure as the manufacturer-price reference and Car and Driver’s as its own displayed listing.

Car and Driver lists the Grand Highlander Hybrid at a $47,205 starting price and 27–36 mpg combined. Other source-backed choices

2026 Honda CR-V and Pilot

Honda lists the gas CR-V at a $30,920 starting MSRP with 28/33 mpg city/highway, and the Pilot at $42,395 with 19/27 mpg. These manufacturer starting prices put both models below the threshold at entry level; they do not show that every trim is below it. The Pilot is the larger option of the two, while the CR-V is the compact choice.

2026 Ford Bronco

Car and Driver lists the Bronco at a $43,290 starting price and 17–20 mpg combined. That makes it a candidate for shoppers who prioritize an off-road-oriented SUV, but the cited figures do not establish that every configuration is under $50,000. Confirm the trim and equipment in your quote.

How to choose among these SUVs

  • For a compact hybrid: Start with the CR-V Hybrid if you value the editorial endorsement and Honda’s published hybrid fuel-economy rating; compare the RAV4 using Toyota’s trim-level estimates and prices.
  • For a lower starting price in a compact SUV: The RAV4, gas CR-V and CX-50 all have cited starting prices well below $50,000. The sources do not provide a consistent same-method comparison of comfort, cargo capacity or driving dynamics across them.
  • For more passenger room: Consider the Passport for a larger two-row SUV, or the Palisade Hybrid and Grand Highlander Hybrid for three-row options. Confirm qualifying trims because their displayed ranges or available trim prices may exceed the cap.
  • For off-road emphasis: The Bronco is the explicitly off-road-oriented candidate in this set. Its listed starting price is not a guarantee that the configuration you want will qualify.
  • For fuel economy: Compare figures only with their stated basis. Honda publishes city/highway figures, Toyota provides estimates by RAV4 trim, and Car and Driver reports combined ranges for several other candidates. These are not a uniform, same-method table.

How the editorial ranking is made

Car and Driver says its rankings draw on instrumented testing of several hundred vehicles each year and editors’ real-world driving impressions. For its under-$50,000 list, it says it considers roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and enjoyment. The page is a curated list of SUVs in the $40,000–$50,000 bracket that made its 10Best or Editors’ Choice lists; it is not an exhaustive market ranking, and some displayed model ranges exceed $50,000.

Before you buy: check the actual budget

  1. Choose a specific model year and trim. Do not rely on a model’s base price to qualify a more expensive configuration.
  2. Get a local, itemized quote. Ask the dealer to identify the vehicle, options, destination charge and any adjustment separately.
  3. Calculate the total you will pay. Add applicable tax, title and registration to the quoted vehicle price; the figures in this guide do not establish an out-the-door price.
  4. Confirm the vehicle is available. The sources cited here do not establish local inventory or transaction prices.
  5. Recheck the model year and figures. Manufacturer and editorial pages can differ in displayed prices and fuel-economy presentation; verify the exact 2026 configuration you are considering.
