For a new 2026 small SUV, several strong candidates start below $30,000 in the U.S.—but that figure means starting MSRP, not the price you will pay at the dealership. Destination or freight, taxes, title, license, options, dealer charges, and local pricing can push the final price over budget. The right pick depends on whether you value a low entry price, fuel economy, cabin utility, all-wheel drive, safety evidence, or driving character most.
What “under $30,000” means for these SUVs
This guide compares new 2026-model-year small SUVs sold in the U.S. The prices are advertised starting figures, not guaranteed transaction prices, and listings can use different price bases. For example, Car and Driver lists the 2026 Chevrolet Trax at $23,495, while Chevrolet’s own page shows a $21,700 starting price. Do not treat an advertised offer as MSRP or assume either number is your dealer’s final price.

Check the exact trim’s current manufacturer listing and ask dealers for an itemized out-the-door quote that includes destination or freight and required fees. Hyundai says its displayed Kona MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, and license; Mazda says its MSRP excludes destination and other charges and that actual dealer prices vary. Manufacturer prices and offers can change.
These candidates come from ranking and manufacturer sources, not a single standardized instrumented comparison. Car and Driver provides comparative descriptions and listed figures; manufacturer pages are the place to verify current trim pricing and specifications. The MPG figures below are EPA estimates reported by the cited sources, not promises of real-world fuel economy.

Best choices by buyer priority
| Priority | Model | Published starting figure | Reported combined fuel economy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest advertised entry price | 2026 Chevrolet Trax | $21,700 on Chevrolet’s page; $23,495 in Car and Driver’s listing | 30 mpg, per Chevrolet and Car and Driver |
| Fuel efficiency | 2026 Kia Niro Hybrid | $28,885, per Car and Driver; confirm trim and destination with Kia | 49–53 mpg, per Car and Driver |
| Interior and driving character | 2026 Mazda CX-30 | $26,375 for 2.5 S, $28,060 for Select Sport, and $29,690 for Preferred, per Mazda; destination excluded | 25–27 mpg, per Car and Driver |
| Roominess | 2026 Volkswagen Taos | $27,975, per Car and Driver; verify trim and destination | 28–31 mpg, per Car and Driver |
| Ranking-based value, retention, and safety mix | 2026 Honda HR-V | $28,050, per Car and Driver | 27–28 mpg, per Car and Driver |
Prices and fuel-economy ranges in this table come from the named sources’ 2026 listings and can vary by trim, drivetrain, destination, and current offers. A number below $30,000 is not proof that a specific in-stock vehicle can be bought for that amount.
For the lowest advertised starting price: Chevrolet Trax
The Trax has the lowest starting figure in this group: Chevrolet lists $21,700, while Car and Driver lists $23,495. Both sources report 30 mpg combined. Car and Driver speaks positively about its construction and driving experience. Because the two published prices differ, use Chevrolet’s current listing and a dealer quote to establish the price of the exact configuration; do not assume the lower figure applies to every trim or reflects a lasting offer.
For fuel economy: Kia Niro Hybrid
Car and Driver lists the Niro Hybrid at $28,885 and 49–53 mpg combined, the highest reported combined estimate among these candidates. It characterizes the hybrid as highly efficient but not especially quick. Confirm the chosen trim’s current Kia price and destination before treating it as a fit under the cap; the published starting figure alone does not settle the final price.
For interior feel and driving character: Mazda CX-30
Car and Driver praises the CX-30’s interior and driving character, while noting that its cabin is small. Mazda’s published trim prices are $26,375 for the 2.5 S, $28,060 for Select Sport, and $29,690 for Preferred, with destination excluded. That leaves little room under $30,000 for destination on the Preferred trim, and higher trims can exceed the cap. Check the exact Mazda configuration and dealer quote before comparing it with better-priced trims from rivals.

For roominess: Volkswagen Taos
Car and Driver lists a $27,975 starting price and 28–31 mpg combined for the Taos, and highlights its roominess and nimble character. Verify the specific trim, drivetrain, and destination-inclusive price; the listed entry price does not establish that a better-equipped vehicle will stay under budget.
For a ranking-led all-rounder: Honda HR-V
Car and Driver lists the HR-V at $28,050 and 27–28 mpg combined. iSeeCars names it its top subcompact SUV under $30,000 in its 2026 ranking. That is a result of a particular scoring method, not a universal verdict: iSeeCars combines reliability, value retention, and safety measures, drawing on analysis of more than 12 million new and used vehicles. Its reliability score uses its longest-lasting-vehicle research; its value-retention score uses predicted five-year depreciation adjusted with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data; and its safety score uses NHTSA ratings and current IIHS award information.
Other 2026 SUVs worth comparing
Hyundai Kona: a safety-conscious shortlist candidate
Hyundai lists the Kona SE at $25,500 before freight and other charges; Car and Driver lists $27,100. Car and Driver reports 26–31 mpg combined, while Hyundai gives trim- and drivetrain-specific EPA estimates. The more expensive Limited is shown above $30,000. IIHS identifies the Kona as the cheapest small SUV among the 2026 award-related models discussed in its release. Verify ratings for the precise model year and equipment rather than assuming that all trims receive the same safety assessment.
Buick Envista: style and efficiency emphasis
Car and Driver lists the Envista at $26,495 and 30 mpg combined, and describes its styling and efficient powertrain favorably. Confirm the exact configuration and drivetrain with Buick before deciding it meets your needs or budget; the published figure is a starting point, not a quote for every version.

Nissan Kicks: value-oriented option
Car and Driver lists the Kicks at $24,305 and 30–31 mpg combined, describing it as value-oriented. Check the 2026 model’s exact trim and drivetrain, since capabilities and equipment should not be assumed to be identical across versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between the shortlist
Compare usable space, not just exterior size
Think through passenger room, cargo volume, rear-seat access, roofline, visibility, and how easily you can load the items you carry. A test fit with a stroller, luggage, sports equipment, or a child seat can reveal differences a price or MPG comparison cannot. The CX-30 is specifically noted by Car and Driver for its small cabin, so check its rear-seat and cargo space in person if utility is a priority.
Confirm drivetrain and fuel economy for the exact trim
Combined MPG is an estimate, and trim or front-wheel-drive versus all-wheel-drive configuration can affect the figure. Hyundai’s Kona page, for example, shows different EPA estimates by trim and drivetrain. If all-wheel drive matters where you live, confirm that it is available on the specific version, what it costs, and how it changes the vehicle’s fuel-economy rating; do not infer capability from the model name alone.
Check safety evidence by model year and equipment
Look up the exact model year and equipment on IIHS and NHTSA. IIHS ratings and awards can depend on crash-test performance, headlights, and standard crash-prevention systems, and should not be carried over automatically to a different model year or configuration. In its 2026 awards release, IIHS reported that 63 vehicles qualified at the point described: 45 Top Safety Pick+ and 18 Top Safety Pick. The release also said more than 77% of 2026 models tested met its stated vehicle-to-vehicle crash-prevention standard at that time. Those are dated snapshots, not permanent totals or a guarantee for every SUV in this guide.

Use rankings as a filter, not a substitute for your priorities
Rankings can help narrow a long list, but their winners depend on what they measure and how they weight it. iSeeCars’ HR-V result reflects its stated reliability, value-retention, and safety framework; another publication may emphasize driving character, space, or price. A ranking cannot tell you whether a particular trim fits your family, parking space, commute, or budget after fees.
A practical path from shortlist to purchase
- Set the real ceiling. Decide whether $30,000 is your target before taxes or a strict out-the-door maximum. If it is the latter, leave room for destination, taxes, title, license, and required dealer charges.
- Choose two or three priorities. For example: low price and efficiency, or rear-seat space and all-wheel drive. Use those priorities to narrow the candidates rather than searching for a single universal winner.
- Verify current specifications and pricing. Check the manufacturer’s current listing for the model year, trim, drivetrain, destination, and available equipment. Treat third-party starting prices as comparison points, not offers.
- Request itemized quotes for vehicles in stock. Ask more than one dealer for the exact trim’s out-the-door price and identify optional accessories or add-ons separately from required charges.
- Inspect and test-drive the finalists. Sit in both rows, assess visibility and entry, try your typical cargo, and drive the actual drivetrain and trim when possible.
- Check exact-vehicle safety information. Match the model year and equipment to IIHS and NHTSA listings before using a rating or award to make a decision.
When a used SUV is the better comparison
If the new-SUV trims that fit your needs exceed the real budget, compare used vehicles separately rather than assuming a lower used price makes them equivalent. Age, mileage, condition, maintenance history, accident history, and remaining warranty all change the tradeoffs. Set acceptable limits for those factors and inspect the specific vehicle before comparing its price with a new entry-level SUV.
