The 2025 Nissan Frontier keeps a conventional midsize-truck recipe: a 3.8-liter V6 and a nine-speed automatic. Nissan rates the engine at 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, and advertises towing capacity of up to 7,150 pounds. The 2025 update adds a larger touchscreen on SV and higher trims, wireless Android Auto, and broader availability of the Crew Cab with a six-foot bed. Those are published specifications and changes—not the results of a firsthand road test. The available evidence also does not establish that the Frontier is the last traditional truck on sale.
What changed for 2025?
Nissan revised the Frontier’s front fascia, grille and bumper, and added redesigned dashboard trim. PRO-X and PRO-4X receive a new tailgate finisher; the lineup also gains a new 17-inch alloy wheel design and Afterburn Orange paint. These are styling and equipment changes rather than a new powertrain.

- Wireless Android Auto joins wireless Apple CarPlay.
- Crew Cab availability with the six-foot bed expands for 2025.
- A telescoping steering wheel is standard across grades; SV and higher add two-way power lumbar support for the driver’s seat.
- Nissan advertises higher maximum trailering capacity than for 2024, but the headline figure depends on configuration.

Engine and transmission: a naturally aspirated V6
The U.S.-market 2025 Frontier uses a 3.8-liter direct-injection V6 rated by Nissan at 310 hp and 281 lb-ft, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. This is a conventional V6-and-automatic layout. The specifications establish the hardware, but they do not establish how the truck rides, steers, accelerates or shifts on the road; no firsthand drive findings are available here.

How much can the 2025 Frontier tow and carry?
Nissan advertises a maximum tow rating of 7,150 pounds. That is the lineup’s maximum, not a rating that applies to every Frontier. Tow and payload ratings vary with trim, cab, drivetrain and bed, so check the ratings for the exact vehicle rather than choosing by the headline number alone.
Nissan says maximum trailering capacity rose by around 500 pounds on all grades and configurations compared with the 2024 model. Because the specific before-and-after configurations are not established here, treat that as Nissan’s broad model-year claim rather than a verified same-configuration increase for every version.

Payload also varies. In Nissan’s brochure, Crew Cab Long Bed 4×4 payload entries span 1,020 to 1,200 pounds across listed trims. Payload must cover occupants and cargo in addition to any equipment added to the truck. Consult the exact vehicle’s rating and account for what will be aboard.

Cab, bed and drivetrain choices
The lineup includes King Cab and Crew Cab body styles. Four-wheel drive availability depends on trim; Crew Cab versions are offered with short and long beds, and Nissan expanded six-foot-bed availability for 2025. Confirm the exact grade and configuration offered by a dealer in your area before assuming a particular cab, bed and drivetrain combination is orderable.

IIHS’s 2025 Frontier Crew Cab ratings vary by evaluation. The organization lists Good results for small-overlap front and updated moderate-overlap front, Acceptable for updated side, and Acceptable for headlights; the headlight rating varies by trim or option. IIHS notes that some ratings apply across 2022–26 models, and the driver-side small-overlap result is based on a 2025 Frontier tested by Nissan. These results describe specific evaluations and configurations, not a single overall safety verdict.

The Crew Cab ratings page also lists blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and rear automatic braking as standard. Extended Cab results are reported separately: IIHS lists an Acceptable pedestrian front crash prevention result for the configurations covered and a Good seat-belt reminder result. Do not transfer those Extended Cab findings to the Crew Cab or treat every rating as the result of a 2025 vehicle test.

Price and configuration checks before buying
Nissan’s press kit lists a U.S. starting MSRP of $32,050 for the 2025 Frontier. This is published launch pricing from Nissan, not a live dealer quote; it excludes applicable tax, title, license and destination charges, and dealers set actual prices. Trim-specific price and equipment differences matter when comparing trucks.
- Confirm cab, bed and drivetrain availability for the grade you want.
- Check the specific vehicle’s tow and payload ratings, not only the lineup maximum.
- Compare equipment as well as MSRP, including driver-assistance features and infotainment.
- Verify the current dealer price and applicable charges before deciding.

Is it really the last traditional truck left standing?
The Frontier clearly retains a traditional powertrain layout: a V6 paired with an automatic transmission. But the available specifications and safety ratings do not establish that it is the last midsize pickup with that kind of setup. Nor do they provide a complete, current comparison of rivals’ powertrains, ratings, prices or equipment. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the 2025 Frontier remains a conventional V6-powered midsize pickup, and buyers should compare equivalent cab, bed and trim configurations before treating it as uniquely traditional.
