Who owns Land Rover?
Land Rover sits within JLR, the company formerly known as Jaguar Land Rover. JLR’s FY2025 reporting identifies Tata Motors Limited as its ultimate parent and controlling party, and JLR says it has been wholly owned by Tata Motors since 2008. JLR’s company history and its company statement on Tata ownership describe that relationship.
Where does Tata Sons fit?
Tata Sons is Tata Motors’ largest shareholder. That places it higher in the corporate ownership structure, but the direct parent and controlling party identified for JLR is Tata Motors Limited—not Tata Sons. The distinction matters: saying “Tata owns Land Rover” is broadly understandable, but naming Tata Motors is more precise.
Is Land Rover the same as JLR?
No. JLR is the company; Land Rover is a marque within it. JLR’s current brand lineup presents four brands: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar. Range Rover, Defender and Discovery are the brands through which Land Rover’s vehicle identity is expressed; Jaguar is also part of JLR. JLR’s brand page shows its current portfolio.

Is Land Rover still British?
Yes, in the sense that JLR describes itself as a British company, with its global headquarters in Coventry and UK design, engineering and manufacturing operations. Its British identity and Tata Motors ownership are not contradictory: the corporate owner is Indian, while JLR identifies as British. JLR also operates manufacturing sites outside the UK, so it would be inaccurate to imply all its vehicles are made in Britain. How did Tata Motors become Land Rover’s owner?
JLR dates the merger of Jaguar and Land Rover under Tata Motors ownership to 2008. The company says it has remained wholly owned by Tata Motors since then. Land Rover’s celebrated entrance and the launch of the Series 1 date to 1948, according to JLR’s history. Those dates describe two different milestones: the marque’s origins and its later corporate ownership.
