Best Subaru Outback Model Years for Reliability: What the Evidence Shows

No single Subaru Outback year is established as the most reliable. Compare the available survey and complaint evidence, then inspect service records, year-specific issues, and recalls by VIN.

There is no source-backed single “best” Subaru Outback model year for reliability. A 2023 Outback is a reasonable year to shortlist, but Consumer Reports rated its predicted reliability 3/5—not a top-tier reliability score. Complaint data flag different years for different reasons: CarComplaints labels 2013 its worst year, while its comparison shows the most complaints for 2018. For a used Outback, use year-specific reports as inspection prompts and judge the individual car by its records, condition, and VIN-specific recall status.

Which Subaru Outback years stand out?

The available U.S.-oriented evidence points to several years worth investigating, but it does not establish a complete reliability ranking. These sources measure different things: Consumer Reports publishes a survey-based prediction, while CarComplaints counts reports submitted to its site.

Model year What the source reports How to use it
2023 Consumer Reports’ March 2023 comparison lists the Outback as Recommended, with an overall score of 80, road-test score of 89/100, predicted reliability of 3/5, and owner satisfaction of 3/5. These are ratings in that archived snapshot, not a current used-car condition assessment. Consumer Reports A candidate to consider, not a proven reliability winner. The predicted reliability score is middling on CR’s five-point scale.
2013 CarComplaints calls 2013 the Outback’s worst model year, accounting for factors beyond raw complaint volume, and lists excessive oil consumption as its leading problem. Its captured comparison displayed 79 complaints for 2013; the live cumulative count can change. CarComplaints Ask about oil consumption, monitoring, and any related repairs. Treat the complaint-site label as a warning to investigate, not a verdict on every car.
2014 CarComplaints also lists excessive oil consumption among its top reported problems for this year and displays user-reported average repair costs and mileage for listed complaints. Those summaries are not representative expected costs for all 2014 Outbacks. CarComplaints Review service and repair records and ask specifically about oil use.
2018 CarComplaints’ captured comparison displayed 169 complaints for 2018, the largest total shown, even though it rated 2013 worse overall. Counts are cumulative and are not failures per vehicle. CarComplaints Do not infer that it has the highest failure rate; the count does not account for how many vehicles are on the road or reporting behavior.
2017 CarComplaints calls out dead-battery complaints. CarComplaints Ask about battery history and investigate repeated battery or charging-system work.
2022 CarComplaints calls out easy windshield cracking. CarComplaints Inspect the windshield and check for replacement or repair records.

These data do not support ranking engine or trim configurations, estimating expected ownership costs by model year, or declaring all other years reliable or unreliable.

Why “most complaints” does not mean “least reliable”

Consumer Reports predicts reliability from owner surveys

Consumer Reports bases its predictions on member surveys about reported vehicle problems. Its March 2023 rating sheet says it typically uses the latest three years of data when a model has not been redesigned or significantly updated. If responses are insufficient or a vehicle is new or redesigned, it may use expert judgment informed by brand history and similar models. The 2023 Outback rating is a snapshot as of March 2023, not a guarantee for a specific car. CR’s 2023 Outback overview

In a December 4, 2025 methodology article, CR said its annual survey covered about 380,000 vehicles from model years 2000–2025, plus a few early 2026 models. It examines 20 trouble areas and weighs problem severity and owner impact. The scale and method help explain a predicted score, but they do not turn it into an observed failure rate for every car. Consumer Reports’ reliability methodology

Complaint counts are reports, not failure rates

CarComplaints counts submissions to its own site and applies its own worst-year judgment. Its comparison shows why those measures differ: 2018 has the largest displayed total, while 2013 is labeled worse based on other possible factors, including repair cost or problems at lower mileage. The counts do not reveal what share of all vehicles failed, and owners’ willingness to report can vary.

Recalls answer a safety question

A recall is not a reliability rating. NHTSA says a recall is issued when a manufacturer or the agency determines that a vehicle presents an unreasonable safety risk or fails minimum safety standards. Owner complaints can help NHTSA decide whether to screen or investigate a possible safety-related defect; they are not themselves a recall determination. Remedies may include repair, replacement, refund, or, rarely, repurchase. NHTSA recalls

How to compare used Outbacks

Use the model-year reports to decide what to ask about, then assess the specific vehicle. No year-level statistic can establish whether a particular used Outback has been maintained or is in good condition.

  1. Review the car’s history. Check maintenance and repair records, mileage, ownership history, and accident history where available. Look for consistency between records and the seller’s account.
  2. Ask about the year-specific complaint areas. For 2013–2014, ask whether oil consumption was monitored or repaired. For 2017, ask about dead batteries or repeated battery work. For 2022, inspect the windshield and ask about cracks or replacement. These are complaint trends, not universal defects. CarComplaints’ Outback reports
  3. Check recalls by VIN. Enter the vehicle identification number in NHTSA’s recall lookup, then confirm with a Subaru dealer whether any required remedy has been completed. NHTSA cautions that manufacturer recall information may not yet appear on its site, so a VIN lookup is a practical check rather than a reason to skip dealer confirmation.
  4. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. A qualified mechanic can assess the actual vehicle; model-year complaint patterns cannot substitute for an inspection.
  5. Keep evidence types separate. Survey predictions, complaint totals, recall records, and a specific vehicle’s service and inspection records answer different questions. An optional OBD2 scanner can reveal some diagnostic information, but it cannot establish reliability, identify every fault, or replace an inspection.
