The best 2026 Subaru Outback configuration depends on what you need: Premium has the lowest listed starting price, Wilderness is built for greater ground clearance and trail-focused equipment, and the XT trims combine turbo power with a higher tow rating. For comfort, compare Limited with Touring; for turbo power without Wilderness’s trail hardware, look at Limited XT or Touring XT.

How the engines, fuel economy and tow ratings compare

Premium, Limited and Touring use a 180-hp 2.5-liter engine. Wilderness, Limited XT and Touring XT have a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter engine; Subaru lists 277 lb-ft of torque for that turbo engine. The choice is not simply a power upgrade: the turbo configurations also carry higher maximum towing ratings, while the Wilderness has a different listed fuel-economy figure from the XT trims.

Engine group Trims Subaru-listed output Listed highway/city mpg Maximum towing
2.5L Premium, Limited, Touring 180 hp 31/25 2,700 lb
Turbo 2.4L Limited XT, Touring XT 260 hp, 277 lb-ft 29/21 3,500 lb
Turbo 2.4L Wilderness 260 hp, 277 lb-ft 27/21 3,500 lb

All figures in the table are Subaru-published specifications, not observed fuel economy or independent towing tests. The maximum tow rating is a vehicle rating, not a guarantee that a particular trailer setup is appropriate; check the vehicle’s owner information and the specific configuration before towing.

Space, cargo and roof-rail figures

Subaru’s 2026 brochure lists up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded. It also lists roof-rail load capacity at 800 pounds static and 220 pounds dynamic, and an overall length of 191.7 inches. The brochure notes that dimensions and features can vary by trim, so these maximum or general figures should not be treated as identical across every configuration. Review the specific trim’s specifications and roof-rail instructions before loading gear.

How to make the final choice

  • Start with your must-haves: Premium for the lowest listed starting price; Touring or Touring XT for ventilated front seats and Nappa leather; Wilderness for greater clearance and all-terrain tires; an XT trim for turbo power.
  • Match towing needs to the trim rating: Premium, Limited and Touring are listed for up to 2,700 pounds; Wilderness and both XT trims are listed for up to 3,500 pounds.
  • Compare the trade-offs: Wilderness combines trail-oriented hardware with the lowest listed fuel-economy figure among the turbo configurations. The XT trims have a higher listed figure, while the non-turbo trims have the highest listed figures.
  • Confirm the actual vehicle: Starting prices do not establish the price you will pay, and exact equipment can vary by trim, options and market. Check the local vehicle’s window sticker and current manufacturer specifications before deciding.

There is no evidence here to establish independent real-world fuel economy, comparative reliability, or local transaction prices. Treat Subaru’s published specifications as a way to narrow the shortlist, not as a substitute for checking the particular vehicle and your own driving and towing requirements.
