The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta S is the best fit for shoppers who want the sedan’s core strengths—comfortable commuting, a shared 158-hp turbo engine and the strongest published highway-economy estimate—without paying for features they may not use. The Sport adds distinctive styling rather than power; the SE and SEL are worth considering when their extra convenience and cabin technology matter to you.
What you get across the 2025 Jetta 1.5T lineup
The U.S.-market S, Sport, SE and SEL all use a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Volkswagen of America’s July 17, 2024 order guide lists that common powertrain on all four trims. The manual transmission belongs to the Jetta GLI, not these 1.5T models, according to Car and Driver’s 2025 Jetta review.
That makes this a choice about price, equipment, styling and comfort—not a ladder of increasingly powerful engines. The Sport adds visual and chassis-related details, while the SE and SEL focus more on convenience and cabin technology.
How the Jetta drives
The Jetta is tuned more for quiet, comfortable daily driving than sharp handling. Car and Driver says the refreshed model drives much like its predecessor, with a comfortable ride but less precise steering than the Jetta GLI or Mazda 3. That distinction matters: the regular Jetta is a commuter sedan, not a substitute for the sportier GLI.

In its hands-on review of a 2025 Jetta 1.5T Sport, CARFAX noted a delay between accelerator input and the turbocharged engine’s surge, followed by ample power for highway passing. It also described the cabin as quiet, with tight steering and a small turning circle. Those are that publication’s impressions of its test car; accelerator response is worth trying for yourself on a test drive.
Try the touch climate controls, too. Car and Driver notes that the Jetta moved from the previous model’s three-dial HVAC controls to touch controls. Whether that change feels intuitive is a personal matter best judged from the driver’s seat.

Fuel economy: compare the source and the exact car
Published estimates are not consistent across the pages consulted. Car and Driver lists 31 mpg city and 41 highway for the S, and 29 city and 40 highway for the Sport, SE and SEL. Volkswagen’s U.S. model page displayed 29 city and 39 highway mpg when accessed in October 2026. Check the Monroney label for the specific 2025 car rather than treating either webpage figure as universal.
CARFAX reported more than 40 mpg on two roughly 200-mile drives and more than 30 mpg around town in its own Sport test. Those are reviewer observations under that test’s conditions, not a general owner result or an EPA estimate. Car and Driver’s report of 42 mpg on a 75-mph highway route refers to prior automatic Jetta models, not a 2025 S test.

These are published price snapshots, not current used-car values or guaranteed transaction prices. The consulted pages show different amounts, and destination-charge treatment may differ. Volkswagen’s page displayed a $22,495 starting MSRP when accessed in October 2026; confirm the specific vehicle’s sticker, destination charge, dealer inventory and current offer before comparing prices.

S: the rational starting point
If your priorities are price, economy and everyday transportation, the S makes the strongest case. It shares the same engine and transmission as the other 1.5T trims, and Car and Driver gives it the lineup’s best highway estimate among the figures it lists. The trade-off is a more basic cabin, including cloth upholstery and manually adjusted front seats as described by Car and Driver.
Sport: choose the look, not extra horsepower
The Sport’s appeal is its black exterior detailing, larger wheels, seat inserts, pedal cluster and XDS system. Volkswagen’s Sport page describes its Molekular seating surfaces as “One-of-a-kind Molekular seating surfaces keep you comfortable.” That is manufacturer marketing copy, not an independent road-test finding. If you are considering Sport chiefly for speed, note that it uses the same rated engine and transmission as the S.

SE and SEL: pay for features you will use
The upper trims make more sense when their convenience or technology upgrades improve your daily routine. Car and Driver identifies wireless smartphone integration on the SE and SEL; its review also lists a 10.3-inch customizable gauge display, Beats Audio and wireless charging on upper trims. The SEL adds 18-inch wheels and adjustable ambient lighting in Volkswagen’s order guide. Verify each item on the car’s sticker, particularly if equipment is important to your decision.

Car and Driver describes useful front-seat space, a reasonably roomy rear compartment and good outward visibility. Its specification table lists a 14-cubic-foot trunk; CARFAX reports 14.1 cubic feet for its tested car. Because those figures differ slightly, treat them as publication-specific measurements rather than a single exact capacity. The Jetta’s trunk is useful for a compact sedan, but check whether your regular luggage or gear fits.
Car and Driver reports standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, with adaptive cruise control available. Do not infer a model-year-specific overall crash rating from a graphic on a review page: verify ratings with NHTSA’s safety ratings or the relevant official source.
Before buying a used or remaining-stock Jetta, use the VIN to check for unrepaired recalls. NHTSA explains how to use its VIN recall lookup; a general model-year statement cannot establish whether a particular vehicle has an open recall.
