The 2025 Ford Maverick adds the choice many hybrid-truck shoppers wanted: all-wheel drive. It pairs the compact pickup’s everyday utility with hybrid fuel-economy estimates of up to 40 mpg combined for AWD, while keeping a more efficient front-wheel-drive hybrid option. A short first drive suggests the AWD hybrid can handle slick, steep gravel approaches with confidence, but the right Maverick depends on the traction, towing and payload your work actually requires.
What changed for the 2025 Ford Maverick?
The headline update is hybrid AWD. For 2025, buyers can choose a 2.5-liter hybrid with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, alongside 2.0-liter EcoBoost configurations. Ford called AWD hybrid the No. 1 owner request in its July 31, 2024 announcement; that is Ford’s characterization, not a separately documented survey result.
The change matters because shoppers no longer have to choose between a hybrid powertrain and AWD. It does not make every Maverick configuration equivalent: drivetrain, trim and packages affect fuel economy, payload, towing and equipment.
How does the Maverick drive?
In MotorTrend’s first-drive review, the 2025 hybrid AWD felt composed on a rainy route that included steep gravel approaches, with the reviewer reporting little wheel slip. The publication also described the truck’s handling as carlike. Those are impressions from a brief press drive, not results from a controlled comparison or a long-term test. MotorTrend preferred the FWD hybrid in its original comparison context, while finding the new AWD hybrid compelling. That distinction captures the trade-off: FWD is the efficiency-first choice, while AWD adds traction for conditions in which the driven wheels may struggle. AWD is not automatically the better choice if those conditions are rare or fuel economy matters more.
What is the 2025 Maverick hybrid MPG?
Ford’s 2025 technical specifications list the following EPA fuel-economy estimates in city/highway/combined order. They are estimates, not a promise of what every driver will achieve.

The AWD hybrid gives up a small amount of Ford’s estimated efficiency compared with the FWD hybrid, while still carrying a higher combined estimate than the listed EcoBoost configurations. How much can a 2025 Maverick tow?
Ford lists 2,000 pounds of towing capacity as standard on applicable configurations. With the available 4K Tow Package, maximum towing rises to 4,000 pounds on eligible configurations. The package and eligibility depend on the truck’s exact configuration; do not assume the 4,000-pound maximum applies to every trim or drivetrain. Ford’s stated maximum payload varies by configuration. These are manufacturer maxima, not guaranteed payload ratings for every truck built in that configuration.

Passengers and cargo count toward payload. Check the load information on the individual vehicle and consult its manual rather than treating a model-level maximum as your truck’s allowance. Ford’s specification sheet lists the configuration maxima.

The Maverick’s appeal is useful pickup capability in a compact, everyday format—not a claim that it replaces every full-size truck. Ford lists FLEXBED features and a multi-position tailgate that can help support longer cargo; the company also describes an available bed extender for added cargo security. A bike or other long item may benefit from the tailgate arrangement, but check model-year fitment and the vehicle’s loading limits before choosing accessories or hauling cargo. Which 2025 Maverick configuration makes sense?
- Choose the FWD hybrid if maximizing Ford’s listed hybrid fuel economy is the priority and AWD traction is not necessary for your typical driving.
- Consider the AWD hybrid if you want hybrid power with added traction for your regular conditions. Its official combined estimate is 37 mpg, versus 38 mpg for the FWD hybrid.
- Compare EcoBoost trims carefully if you need a particular trim or capability. Ford lists distinct fuel-economy and payload figures for base AWD EcoBoost, Tremor and Lobo.
- Confirm the towing package and vehicle rating if hauling a trailer is central to the decision. The 4,000-pound figure is limited to eligible configurations with the 4K Tow Package.
MotorTrend reported a $2,220 AWD upcharge in the context of its review; that figure is not a current universal price. Build-specific pricing and availability can change, so use Ford’s configurator or a dealer quote for the vehicle you are considering.
