For outright performance, consider the BMW M5 Touring, Audi RS 6 Avant performance, Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon, or Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo.
This is a U.S.-market guide to vehicles listed for the 2026 model year. The rankings are editorial fits based on manufacturer-published body styles, equipment, powertrains, cargo figures, prices, and performance claims—not the results of independent road testing. Availability, dealer inventory, pricing, and even model-year web pages can change during 2026.
The 2026 station-wagon shortlist
There are fewer new wagons in the United States than in many other markets, but the remaining choices cover a surprisingly wide range: attainable premium transportation, long-distance luxury, extreme V8 performance, plug-in-hybrid power, and battery-electric driving. The table below puts the main differences in one place.
| Pick | Best for | Powertrain or format | Published cargo figure | Starting MSRP shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo V60 Cross Country | Attainable luxury | 247-hp gasoline mild hybrid; standard AWD | Up to 60.5 cu. ft. | $53,595 |
| Audi A6 allroad | All-around luxury | V6; standard quattro AWD | 30.0 cu. ft. behind rear seats | $73,100 |
| Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain | Luxury touring | All-Terrain wagon; AWD | Not stated in the supplied U.S. listing | Verify current configurator |
| BMW M5 Touring | High-performance daily use | 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, electric motor, M xDrive AWD | Not stated in the supplied source | $125,300 |
| Audi RS 6 Avant performance | Traditional combustion performance | Twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 | Not stated in the supplied source | Verify current configurator |
| Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon | Plug-in-hybrid performance | AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six PHEV; 577 hp combined | 33.1 to 64.6 cu. ft. | $93,350 |
| Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo | Electric performance | Battery-electric road-focused wagon | Not stated in the supplied source | From $158,900 as of May 2026 |
| Subaru Outback | Value and outdoor utility | Midsize crossover SUV with standard AWD | Up to 80.5 cu. ft. | $34,995 for Premium |
Important: Cargo measurements are not necessarily comparable across manufacturers. Some figures describe maximum volume with the rear seats folded, while the A6 allroad figure is specifically behind the rear seats. Prices are base MSRPs where displayed and do not include destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, options, or market adjustments.

What counts as a station wagon here?
In the broad enthusiast sense, a station wagon is a long-roof, five-door passenger vehicle with a low or moderate ride height and a rear cargo area. That definition includes conventional luxury wagons such as the V60 Cross Country, A6 allroad, E-Class All-Terrain, M5 Touring, RS 6 Avant, and E 53 Wagon. It also includes the road-focused Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo.
The Subaru Outback requires a qualification. Subaru officially markets the redesigned 2026 Outback as a midsize crossover SUV, not a station wagon. Subaru has even described the vehicle as moving away from its former image as a tall station wagon toward a full SUV. Its long body, low-roof profile relative to traditional SUVs, and rear hatch still make it relevant to shoppers searching for a wagon, so it is included here as the best wagon alternative rather than as a strict classification.
Names such as Cross Country, allroad, All-Terrain, Touring, Avant, and Sport Turismo are manufacturer naming conventions. They do not all describe the same ground clearance, drivetrain, or intended use.
1. Volvo V60 Cross Country: best attainable luxury wagon
The 2026 Volvo V60 Cross Country is the most sensible entry point for a buyer who wants a genuine premium wagon without moving into the six-figure German performance segment. Its listed starting MSRP is $53,595, which is well above mainstream new-car pricing but relatively approachable within this group.
Volvo lists a gasoline mild-hybrid powertrain producing 247 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, and a 26-mpg combined EPA estimate. The manufacturer also lists a 0-to-60-mph time as quick as 6.6 seconds. Those are different kinds of numbers: the fuel-economy figure is an EPA estimate, while the acceleration figure is a manufacturer claim. Neither should be treated as a guarantee of an individual vehicle’s real-world results.
The Cross Country treatment adds useful mixed-surface equipment, including an Off Road drive mode, increased ground clearance, and Hill Descent Control. Volvo lists up to 60.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity. That combination makes the V60 more than a style exercise: it is a conventional luxury wagon with standard AWD and hardware aimed at gravel roads, snow, and poorly maintained surfaces.
Why it wins this category: It balances price, premium presentation, long-roof practicality, and light-duty rough-road equipment better than any other conventional wagon in this list.
Best for: Buyers who want a luxury wagon for commuting, road trips, winter weather, and occasional unpaved-road use.

Its cargo figure is a maximum, so check the actual luggage space with the rear seats in your preferred position.
2. Audi A6 allroad: best all-around luxury wagon
The 2026 Audi A6 allroad is the strongest fit for shoppers who want an upscale, highway-oriented wagon with traditional proportions and more utility than a sedan. Audi lists a starting MSRP of $73,100, standard quattro all-wheel drive, a V6 engine, and 30.0 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats.
Its appeal is less about maximum adventure equipment or track-focused numbers and more about the overall package: a premium cabin, a long roof, standard all-wheel drive, and a format that remains easier to load than a conventional sedan. Audi positions the allroad as the mixed-surface, comfort-oriented member of the A6 family.
Why it wins this category: It is the most broadly rounded luxury wagon here for a buyer who wants refinement, usable cargo space, and all-weather capability without choosing a dedicated performance flagship.
Recommended Free Tools
Best for: Long-distance drivers who want a quiet, upscale wagon concept and do not need the extreme output of the RS 6 Avant.
Watch-outs: The published 30.0-cubic-foot figure is behind the rear seats, so it should not be compared directly with maximum folded-seat figures from other manufacturers. The A6 allroad is also not the same vehicle as the RS 6 Avant performance.
3. Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain: best luxury touring wagon
The 2026 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain is the choice for buyers who place long-distance comfort, cabin ambience, and effortless performance above purchase price or maximum cargo statistics.
Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. pages identify the All-Terrain as an E-Class wagon with all-wheel drive and publish a 4.6-second 0-to-60-mph figure. The company also emphasizes comfort-focused cabin technology and acoustic treatment. Those descriptions explain the model’s intended positioning, but they are not a substitute for independent testing of ride quality, cabin noise, or seat comfort.

The E 450 sits below the AMG E 53 in the performance hierarchy. It is therefore the more natural recommendation for someone who wants an elegant touring wagon rather than an aggressively tuned performance car with a cargo area.
Why it wins this category: It combines the E-Class luxury-tourer mission with the versatility of a five-door wagon and enough published acceleration to make highway merging and passing feel like non-events on paper.
Best for: Drivers who regularly cover long distances and want a premium interior and comfort-oriented technology without stepping up to the AMG version.
Watch-outs: The supplied Mercedes-Benz search result does not expose a complete current MSRP, so check the live U.S. configurator before treating any price estimate as authoritative. Also verify actual dealer availability; low-volume wagons may be listed nationally but difficult to locate locally.
4. BMW M5 Touring: best performance wagon for daily use
The 2026 BMW M5 Touring is the most compelling choice for a buyer who wants a true high-performance wagon but needs one vehicle to handle ordinary daily duties. BMW’s U.S. Touring page lists a starting MSRP of $125,300 and identifies the M5 Touring as the only BMW Touring model currently available in the United States.
BMW describes the car as using a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8, a high-performance electric motor, and an M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. That makes it an electrified, all-wheel-drive performance wagon rather than a simple gas-only estate car. The combination is aimed at buyers who want serious power while retaining a rear cargo area and a more practical body than a sedan or coupe.
Why it wins this category: It is a particularly strong one-car solution for a performance enthusiast: the wagon body supports daily errands and travel, while the M5 hardware supplies the high-performance focus.
Best for: Drivers who want a modern V8 performance wagon with electrification and all-wheel drive, but do not want to reserve it only for weekend use.

Watch-outs: The starting price is only the entry point. Options, destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and market adjustments can materially change the transaction price. BMW’s published description supports a highly capable positioning, but this guide does not independently rank it against every rival by lap time or acceleration.
5. Audi RS 6 Avant performance: best traditional combustion performance wagon
The 2026 Audi RS 6 Avant performance is the clearest choice for someone who wants the classic premium Avant formula paired with extreme straight-line performance. Audi lists a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and presents the RS 6 as the performance-focused long-roof member of the A6 family.
Its role is distinctly different from the A6 allroad. The allroad emphasizes luxury, comfort, and mixed-surface versatility. The RS 6 Avant uses the same broad long-roof idea but turns the emphasis toward high performance and aggressive presentation. Choosing between them is less about which name sounds more adventurous and more about whether your priority is touring versatility or performance hardware.
Why it wins this category: It preserves the visual and functional character of a traditional combustion-powered premium wagon while offering the kind of V8 performance that has made the RS 6 a reference point among enthusiast wagons.

Best for: Buyers who specifically want a V8-powered, gas-engine performance wagon and prefer Audi’s Avant design and cabin environment.
Watch-outs: The supplied Audi overview does not expose a complete current U.S. MSRP, so verify pricing in Audi’s live configurator. Do not use the A6 allroad’s price or specifications as a proxy for the RS 6 Avant; they are separate versions with different priorities.
6. Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon: best plug-in-hybrid performance wagon
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon is the best fit for a shopper who wants electric-assisted daily driving without giving up serious performance. Mercedes-Benz lists a plug-in-hybrid system combining an AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six, a 120-kilowatt electric motor, and a 28.6-kWh high-performance battery.
The manufacturer lists standard combined output of 577 horsepower, a 4.0-second 0-to-60-mph time, and cargo capacity from 33.1 to 64.6 cubic feet. Its displayed MSRP is $93,350. The cargo range is useful because it shows that the E 53 remains a practical wagon even though its powertrain and AMG branding move it well beyond ordinary family transportation.

Why it wins this category: It offers a middle path between a conventional high-performance wagon and a full battery-electric car: the plug-in system can support electric-oriented short trips when charged, while the combustion engine remains part of the long-distance equation.
Best for: Drivers with regular access to charging who want to use electric assistance for appropriate daily trips but still want a high-output performance wagon for longer journeys.
Watch-outs: Plug-in-hybrid benefits depend on charging frequency, trip length, weather, driving style, and the vehicle’s operating conditions. Published MPGe or electric-driving figures should not be treated as a prediction of every owner’s fuel consumption. The E 53 is also not simply a more powerful E 450; it is the AMG performance variant.
7. Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo: best electric performance wagon
The Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo is the pick for shoppers who prioritize electric acceleration, charging performance, and sports-car character over price, maximum ride height, or traditional gas-engine appeal.

The Sport Turismo is the practical, road-focused wagon body style; the Cross Turismo is the wagon-adjacent variant with a more adventurous positioning. Porsche’s U.S. material identifies the GTS Sport Turismo as available in the United States and lists a base price from $158,900 as of May 2026.
The Taycan is an expensive choice, but it serves a specific purpose in this market: it gives an enthusiast a low-roof, rear-hatch electric vehicle without requiring the visual or driving position of an SUV. Porsche’s current Taycan site is transitioning to 2027 model-year listings, so verify the exact 2026 GTS Sport Turismo range, equipment, and current ordering status before publishing a purchase decision.
Why it wins this category: It is the most direct answer for someone seeking a battery-electric performance wagon rather than a crossover with wagon-like styling.
Best for: EV shoppers who have dependable charging access and value acceleration and road performance more than affordability or rough-road clearance.

8. Subaru Outback: best value and outdoor-use wagon alternative
The redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback is not officially a station wagon—Subaru calls it a midsize crossover SUV—but it belongs in a broad wagon-shopping guide because of its long-roof, five-door layout. It is the strongest choice here for buyers who put price, cargo utility, standard AWD, ground clearance, and outdoor use ahead of luxury-brand presentation.
Subaru lists a starting price of $34,995 for the Premium trim. Standard equipment includes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, EyeSight driver-assistance technology, a 12.1-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The brochure lists up to 80.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is the highest maximum figure among the models summarized here, although the measurement should not be compared as if every manufacturer uses identical conditions.
Regular versions have 8.7 inches of ground clearance, while the Wilderness trim has 9.5 inches. Applicable trims can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Those numbers explain why the Outback is increasingly classified as an SUV: it offers more clearance and utility than the conventional luxury wagons in this guide.
Why it wins this category: It delivers the most cargo room, standard AWD, useful clearance, and the lowest listed starting price by a wide margin.
Best for: Families, campers, pet owners, and outdoor users who want wagon-like loading access but need more clearance and utility than a low-roof luxury wagon typically provides.
Watch-outs: Choose it because its crossover-SUV attributes fit your needs, not because Subaru currently calls it a wagon. If a low driving position, luxury materials, or a true conventional wagon body is non-negotiable, look at the V60, A6 allroad, or E-Class instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among the 2026 wagons
If your budget is the deciding factor
The Outback is the clear value leader at a listed $34,995 starting MSRP for the Premium trim. Among conventional luxury wagons, the V60 Cross Country is the most attainable at $53,595, but it is still a premium vehicle rather than a mainstream bargain. The A6 allroad starts at $73,100, and the performance-focused models rise quickly from there.

Do not compare only the advertised number. Add destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, options, and any market adjustment. For the E 450 and RS 6, confirm the current price directly in the live Mercedes-Benz or Audi U.S. configurator because the supplied overview extracts do not provide a complete MSRP.
If you want the most usable cargo capacity
On the published maximum figures, the Outback leads with up to 80.5 cubic feet, followed by the E 53 Wagon at 64.6 and the V60 Cross Country at 60.5. The A6 allroad’s 30.0-cubic-foot figure is specifically behind the rear seats, so it cannot be ranked directly against those maximum folded-seat numbers.
Think about how you actually carry things. A maximum volume figure is useful for moving bulky items with the rear seats folded, while behind-seat capacity matters more when passengers occupy the second row. Measure strollers, pet crates, bicycles, luggage, or musical equipment before assuming that a larger published number guarantees a better fit.
If you drive on snow, gravel, or rough access roads
The Outback is the strongest utility-oriented choice because of its standard AWD, 8.7 inches of clearance on regular versions, up to 9.5 inches on Wilderness, and available towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds. The V60 Cross Country is the more luxury-oriented alternative and adds Off Road mode, increased ground clearance, and Hill Descent Control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The A6 allroad and E-Class All-Terrain also use all-weather-oriented wagon formats, but this guide does not independently test their traction, clearance, or ride performance. For frequent severe trails, compare them with purpose-built SUVs rather than assuming any vehicle with Cross Country, allroad, or All-Terrain in its name is an off-road vehicle.
If performance matters most
- Choose the BMW M5 Touring if you want a high-performance daily driver with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, electric motor, and M xDrive AWD.
- Choose the Audi RS 6 Avant performance if a traditional combustion-powered 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and classic Avant character are the priority.
- Choose the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon if you want a plug-in-hybrid system, 577-hp published combined output, and a 4.0-second manufacturer 0-to-60-mph figure.
- Choose the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo if you want an all-electric performance wagon and are comfortable with its $158,900 starting price from the cited May 2026 material.
These categories are not a tested speed ranking. The cited acceleration numbers are manufacturer claims, and the available specifications do not provide a consistent, independently verified comparison across all four cars.
If you want to reduce gasoline use
The E 53 HYBRID Wagon is the plug-in-hybrid choice, while the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo is fully electric. A plug-in hybrid makes the most sense when the owner can charge regularly and has a driving pattern that uses the battery meaningfully. An EV requires a dependable charging plan at home, work, or public stations.
The V60’s 26-mpg combined EPA estimate belongs to a gasoline mild-hybrid system. Mild-hybrid technology is not the same as a plug-in hybrid and should not be presented as allowing routine electric-only driving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMaking a wagon’s cargo space work harder
A wagon can carry more than a sedan, but families and outdoor users may still need additional capacity for holiday luggage, skis, camping equipment, or bulky recreation gear. A station wagon roof rack can add mounting space, provided the vehicle has compatible factory rails or crossbars and the setup stays within the manufacturer’s roof-load limits.
A roof cargo box is another practical option when the rear cargo area is full. Check the exact crossbar spread, roof-rail design, hatch clearance, total roof-load rating, and model-year fitment before purchasing. A box that fits one wagon configuration may not fit another trim or roof system, even within the same model line.
For pets, wet equipment, mud, and outdoor gear, an all-weather cargo liner can protect the cargo floor. Confirm the exact model year, body style, seat configuration, and trim before ordering; a liner for an older Outback, V90, or standard E-Class sedan should not be assumed to fit a 2026 wagon.
Models not included as core 2026 U.S. wagon picks
Volvo V90 Cross Country
The Volvo V90 Cross Country is not listed as a new-vehicle purchase in the United States for 2026. Volvo’s U.S. page says it is no longer available new and directs shoppers toward the V60 Cross Country or certified pre-owned inventory. An owner’s manual or an international model page does not establish current U.S. retail availability.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is wagon-adjacent rather than a core road-focused station-wagon recommendation. Porsche distinguishes its more rugged positioning from the Sport Turismo’s road-oriented body. If a specific Cross Turismo trim is being considered, verify its 2026 U.S. availability separately rather than assuming that every international version is sold here.
European-market wagons
Vehicles such as the BMW 5 Series Touring, Volkswagen Golf Variant, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate, and Audi A6 Avant versions that are not listed by Audi USA may be available overseas but do not meet this guide’s threshold. The relevant question for a U.S. buyer is whether the manufacturer offers the vehicle through its U.S. site, U.S. inventory, or U.S. configurator.
What to verify before placing an order
- Confirm the model year and body style. A page can remain online while the manufacturer’s inventory has moved to a new model year or a different trim structure.
- Check a U.S. configurator or dealer inventory. Low-volume luxury wagons may be technically available nationally but scarce in a particular region.
- Get the complete out-the-door price. Treat every listed MSRP as a starting point and ask for destination, documentation, registration, taxes, options, and any market adjustment separately.
- Separate EPA figures from manufacturer claims. The V60’s 26-mpg combined number is an EPA estimate; the 6.6-second V60, 4.6-second E 450, and 4.0-second E 53 figures are manufacturer-published acceleration claims.
- Measure your cargo. Compare behind-seat space with maximum folded-seat space and bring the dimensions of the items you carry most often.
- Plan charging before choosing an electrified wagon. A plug-in hybrid or EV is only as convenient as the owner’s charging access and routine.
- Do not infer reliability from this list. The supplied manufacturer specifications establish equipment and positioning, not long-term dependability, maintenance cost, or resale value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2026 Subaru Outback a station wagon or an SUV?
Subaru officially classifies the redesigned 2026 Outback as a midsize crossover SUV. It is included here as a wagon alternative because its long-roof, five-door layout serves many of the same cargo and road-trip needs as a wagon.
Which new 2026 wagon has the most published cargo capacity?
The Subaru Outback has the highest published maximum in this guide at up to 80.5 cubic feet, but it is a crossover SUV. Among conventional wagons, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID Wagon is listed at up to 64.6 cubic feet, while the Volvo V60 Cross Country is listed at up to 60.5 cubic feet. Cargo-measurement methods differ, so compare the dimensions you actually need.
Can I still buy a new Volvo V90 Cross Country in the U.S. for 2026?
No. Volvo’s U.S. V90 Cross Country page says the model is no longer available as a new vehicle in the United States and points shoppers toward the V60 Cross Country or certified pre-owned inventory.
Are these rankings based on road tests?
No. They are editorial category picks based on current manufacturer-published U.S. specifications, prices where displayed, equipment, body styles, cargo figures, and intended positioning. They are not independent rankings of ride quality, handling, reliability, fuel economy, or acceleration.
The Bottom Line
The Volvo V60 Cross Country is the best conventional luxury wagon for the money, the Audi A6 allroad is the broadest luxury choice, and the Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain is the touring specialist. Choose the BMW M5 Touring or Audi RS 6 Avant performance for combustion-powered performance, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 for plug-in-hybrid performance, and the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo for electric performance. If practicality and price matter more than strict wagon classification, the 2026 Subaru Outback remains the most useful answer.
