These are model-specific recommendations, not a rule that every 383 stroker needs an R44LTS, an R42LTS, or a 0.040-inch gap. Chevrolet Performance’s catalog describes its SP383 as a 383-cubic-inch engine and gives catalog output figures of 435 hp and 445 lb-ft; those figures apply to that catalog engine, not to 383 builds generally.

How to confirm the right plug for your build
- Identify the exact engine. Check the engine label, invoice, build sheet, or builder’s documentation. If it is a ZZ383 or SP383 EFI, use the corresponding row above as a starting point.
- Check the cylinder-head specification. Verify thread size, reach, seat type, and clearance against the head manufacturer’s documentation. The cited engine documents do not establish fitment across aftermarket heads or custom combinations.
- Confirm the heat range and operating use. For the ZZ383, the manual copy distinguishes general use from mostly competition racing. Do not apply its colder R42LTS option to a different engine without documentation supporting that choice.
- Set the gap to your engine’s specification. The SP383 EFI document specifies 0.040 inch for that engine. For another combination, use its own specification rather than assuming the SP383 figure applies.
Why “colder” is not a universal upgrade
The ZZ383 manual copy names R42LTS as an option for mostly competition racing, compared with R44LTS for general use. That distinction is evidence for the documented ZZ383 application only; it does not establish that a colder plug improves every stroker’s performance. For a custom engine, get the plug model and gap from its builder or the cylinder-head and engine documentation.

Check the part number carefully
Keep the full suffix when comparing plugs. R42LTS and R42TS are different part numbers; a retail listing for R42TS does not verify that it is the ZZ383 manual’s R42LTS recommendation. Confirm the exact model and physical fit before ordering.
