The 2024 Lucid Air Pure makes a persuasive case for the simplest Air drivetrain: one rear motor, less mass than the dual-motor trims, and efficiency that stood out in real-world driving. In Ars Technica’s review, the 4,564-pound test car returned 4.8 miles per kilowatt-hour on a 300-mile drive at 70 mph. Its strongest appeal is not just range, but the way the lighter rear-drive setup changes the car’s steering feel.
What the 2024 Air Pure offers
Lucid’s 2024 technical sheet describes the Air Pure as a rear-wheel-drive sedan with one permanent-magnet motor, rated at 430 hp and 406 lb-ft, paired with an 88-kWh battery. Lucid estimated 410 miles of range with 19-inch wheels and 394 miles with 20-inch wheels. Those are model-year-specific estimates; they should not be confused with later Pure specifications. Why the lower weight matters on the road
Ars Technica put its 2024 test car at 4,564 pounds, 424 pounds lighter than an Air Touring and 762 pounds lighter than an Air Grand Touring. Those are the review’s trim-to-trim comparisons, not a claim that every Pure weighs exactly the same; equipment and configuration can affect vehicle weight. Ars Technica’s 2024 review.

The reviewer found the steering more engaging than in the heavier dual-motor Airs. The steering effort firms under load, and with power delivered at the rear, the front tires are not also tasked with putting down acceleration. That can leave them freer to handle steering and cornering forces. Ars also found the suspension comfortable over rough roads. These are driving impressions from one review, not universal or instrumented findings.

Efficiency: strong results, but test conditions matter
On a 300-mile drive at a steady 70 mph, Ars Technica recorded 4.8 mi/kWh. On lower-speed desert roads with heavy air-conditioning use, its result was 4.0 mi/kWh. These are observed results from different routes and conditions; the gap is a reminder that speed, climate control, terrain and weather affect an EV’s consumption.
For the 2025 model year, Lucid’s technical sheet lists 420 miles and 5.0 mi/kWh with 19-inch wheels, or 372 miles and 4.4 mi/kWh with 20-inch wheels. These are 2025 EPA-estimated figures, not a controlled comparison with Ars’s 2024 road test. Lucid cautions that actual results vary with temperature, driving habits, charging and battery condition. Independent road tests use different methods from EPA estimates. MotorTrend’s 2025 Air Pure, fitted with 20-inch wheels, covered 313 miles in its 70-mph road-trip test. That result is useful context, but it is not directly comparable to the EPA combined rating or Ars’s 2024 test: the model year, vehicle and test circumstances differ. Lucid announced the 2025 Air updates as EPA-estimated 420 miles from an 84-kWh battery and 146 MPGe. Its detailed 2025 specifications also separate range and efficiency by wheel size, with a substantial rating difference between 19- and 20-inch wheels. The 2024 sheet instead lists an 88-kWh battery and estimates 410 or 394 miles depending on wheel size. Handling strengths and equipment caveats
MotorTrend’s 2025 test also praised the car’s precise steering and neutral handling. Road test editor Chris Walton said, “It was clearly set up by someone who knows vehicle dynamics.” In the same test, MotorTrend reported that the tested car’s DreamDrive Pro struggled on slight curves and that key-fob or proximity detection was occasionally unreliable. Those observations apply to its test vehicle and configuration, not necessarily every Air Pure.

For a buyer comparing Air Pure listings, verify the model year, wheel size and original equipment before using a range figure to estimate trips or charging needs. The wheel-size difference in Lucid’s 2025 EPA estimates is large enough to matter. Plan around the range that matches the specific car, then leave a margin for cold weather, high speeds, hills and cabin heating or cooling.

Charging equipment is also model-year-specific. Lucid’s 2026 announcement says the Mobile Charging Cable Kit becomes standard across its models and includes 120 V and 240 V adapters; that does not establish that the same kit came with 2024 or 2025 cars. The announcement describes 240 V charging using a NEMA 14-50 adapter. For home Level 2 charging, confirm the vehicle’s connector, the charger’s compatibility and the capacity of the home electrical circuit before purchase or installation. Who the 2024 Pure suits
- Choose the Pure for driving feel: the review’s central advantage is a lighter rear-drive setup with more engaging steering, while retaining a comfortable ride over rough pavement.
- Choose wheels with range in mind: official range estimates vary by wheel size, particularly in Lucid’s 2025 figures.
- Use road tests as context, not promises: steady-speed highway results and EPA combined estimates describe different conditions and should not be read as equivalent.
- Check the actual car’s kit and driver-assistance equipment: model year and configuration determine what is included, and MotorTrend’s reported DreamDrive Pro and proximity-detection issues were specific to its tested vehicle.
