The best spark plug for a two-stroke outboard is the one specified for its exact make, model, and year—not a universal “performance” plug. Find those engine details first, then confirm the plug type and gap in the owner’s manual or an authoritative manufacturer application finder before buying.
What does “best spark plugs for 2 stroke outboard engines” really mean?
For an outboard, “best” means the correct manufacturer-approved fit for the specific engine. Plug type, heat range, resistor configuration, and gap can vary by application, including between engines from the same brand. A plug that fits the threads is not necessarily the right plug for the engine.

What spark plug fits my outboard?
- Identify the engine. Record the manufacturer, full model designation, and model year from the engine identification plate or its documentation.
- Check the owner’s manual. Use the specified plug part number and gap for that exact engine. Follow the manual for inspection schedule and installation method as well.
- Confirm application fitment. If using a manufacturer application finder or product page, match the complete model and year range—not just horsepower or brand.
- Check the plug before installation. Even if it arrives pre-gapped, verify the gap against the engine manual. Product-page specifications are application-specific, not a substitute for checking your engine.

The listed plugs and gaps apply only to the applications named in the cited manufacturer pages. In particular, the Quicksilver 8M0114746 specification does not establish the correct plug for every Mercury outboard.
What gap should I set on an outboard spark plug?
Set the gap specified in the owner’s manual for your exact engine. The examples above include two Yamaha applications with a listed 0.7 mm gap and one Quicksilver product application listed at 1.5 mm; those figures are not universal two-stroke settings.

A plug may arrive pre-gapped, but that does not remove the need to check it. Mercury Marine’s product guidance advises checking the gap and using the plug recommended by the engine manufacturer. If the manual’s specification differs from a general product description, follow the manual for your engine.
Should you choose an upgraded or different-electrode plug?
Do not assume that a different electrode material or an “upgrade” will increase horsepower, improve fuel economy or starting, or extend service life. NGK lists BR7HIX as an advanced option on the Yamaha 20 hp 20C application page and describes its electrode design, but that information does not establish a general performance advantage over the standard listed BR7HS. Use an alternative only if the engine manufacturer’s application information approves it for your exact model and year.

Installation and replacement: follow the engine manual
Two-stroke outboards do not share one universal replacement interval, removal procedure, or tightening torque. Consult the manual for your engine’s inspection schedule, plug gap, installation method, and torque specification. Do not apply a torque figure or service interval from a different model.
