Best Small Electric Scooters: 5 Top Picks for Easy Commuting

The best small electric scooters are portable, not merely compact. Compare the NIU KQi Air, Unagi Voyager, Levy Light, Segway E2 Pro, and Apollo Air by carry weight, range, tires, charging, and rider capacity.

The best small electric scooter for most commuters is the NIU KQi Air because it combines a 26.2-pound carry weight with a claimed 20-mph top speed, useful manufacturer-rated range, tubeless tires, lighting, turn signals, and a 265-pound rider limit. If carrying weight matters less than larger tires, the Segway Ninebot E2 Pro is a more conventional alternative. For a removable battery, choose the Levy Light; for a premium dual-motor design, consider the Unagi Model One Voyager.

Here, “small” means portable and easy to store—not simply short in length. A scooter that fits under a desk but weighs 41 pounds may be compact yet awkward to carry up stairs. For commuting, weight, folded storage, charging access, tire design, braking, weather resistance, and realistic range matter as much as the top-speed number.

Quick comparison: the five best small electric scooters

The specifications below are manufacturer-published figures. Range is not a promise of commuting distance: speed, rider weight, hills, temperature, tire pressure, riding mode, and repeated stops can all reduce it.

1. NIU KQi Air: best overall for lightweight portability

The NIU KQi Air is the strongest match for commuters who need a genuinely carryable scooter without giving up the features expected of a daily urban vehicle. At 26.2 pounds, it is lighter than most adult commuter scooters, and its carbon-fiber frame helps explain the low weight. It has a claimed 20-mph top speed and approximately 30–31 miles of advertised range, depending on which NIU product information is consulted.

The equipment list is practical rather than bare-bones: 9.5-inch tubeless tires, a front disc brake supplemented by regenerative braking, turn signals, rear lighting, IP55 water resistance, and a 265-pound maximum rider weight. NIU lists a charge time of about five hours. The company identifies Amazon as one of its sales channels, so shoppers looking for the NIU KQi Air electric scooter may find a marketplace listing, although seller, price, and stock should be checked at the time of purchase.

Why it suits commuting

  • At 26.2 pounds, it is the easiest model here to carry into a train, office, or apartment.
  • The tubeless tires avoid the conventional inner-tube puncture problem.
  • Turn signals, rear lighting, and dual braking are useful for regular street riding.
  • The 265-pound limit accommodates more riders than the Unagi or Apollo Air, although clothing, bags, and other carried weight count toward the limit.

Limitations

The KQi Air is a premium lightweight scooter, and its smaller wheels will not smooth rough pavement as effectively as a heavier model with larger tires. Carbon fiber may also make the economics of repair or replacement more important than with a basic aluminum scooter. Most importantly, the 30–31-mile figure is a manufacturer claim under specified conditions, not a guaranteed distance for a heavy rider traveling quickly through hills and cold weather.

2. Unagi Model One Voyager: best premium lightweight dual-motor option

The Unagi Model One Voyager is aimed at riders who want a polished, highly portable scooter and are willing to accept a smaller rider limit and less cushioning. It weighs 29.6 pounds and uses two 250-watt nominal motors with 1,000 watts of peak power. Unagi lists a 20-mph maximum speed, a nominal range of 12–25 miles, one-click folding, dual electronic braking, and a 220-pound maximum rider weight.

Its 7.5-inch solid tires are puncture-proof in the conventional sense, so there is no pneumatic tube to inflate or repair. The dual-motor layout can also be useful for hill starts and inclines. Charging is relatively quick on paper: Unagi lists approximately two hours to reach 80 percent and three hours for a full charge.

Why it suits commuting

  • The 29.6-pound weight remains manageable for stairs and public transportation.
  • Solid tires eliminate routine puncture worries.
  • Dual motors provide more launch assistance than a typical single-motor lightweight scooter.
  • One-click folding and app-connected controls appeal to commuters who value convenience and compact storage.

Limitations

Solid 7.5-inch tires generally transmit more road texture than pneumatic tires, and their lack of air cushioning can be less comfortable on broken pavement. They may also provide less wet-surface grip than a suitable pneumatic tire. The 220-pound limit is lower than the NIU, Levy, and Segway limits; include clothing, a backpack, and work equipment when checking it.

Availability needs special attention. The Voyager’s direct checkout page showed it as out of stock when this research was conducted, while the subscription option remained available. Do not assume that direct-purchase inventory, subscription terms, or pricing will remain unchanged.

3. Levy Light: best for removable-battery practicality

The Levy Light is the most useful choice for a specific charging problem: you cannot conveniently bring the whole scooter to an electrical outlet. Its battery uses a quick-release design and can be removed and charged separately. Levy also offers replacement and spare batteries, subject to the exact model and battery configuration.

The scooter weighs roughly 27–28 pounds, reaches a listed 18 mph, and provides approximately 8–10 miles per battery depending on the battery size and the product page being used. It folds for storage and has a listed 275-pound maximum load, the highest limit in this group. Tire configuration matters: the Levy Light may be configured with pneumatic or solid tires.

Why it suits commuting

  • You can carry only the battery to an office or apartment outlet rather than carrying the entire scooter.
  • A compatible spare battery can extend the practical distance between charges.
  • The low scooter weight makes the platform easy to move even when the battery is installed.
  • The higher listed load limit makes it worth considering for larger riders.

Limitations

Per-battery range is substantially shorter than the headline figures for the NIU or Voyager, and the 18-mph top speed is lower. Compare the battery capacity and tire type of the exact listing rather than treating every Levy Light specification as interchangeable.

Solid tires reduce puncture risk but usually sacrifice cushioning and may offer less wet traction. Pneumatic tires are more forgiving over rough pavement but require regular pressure checks and can puncture. If you purchase a spare battery, use only a Levy-approved battery for the exact scooter. Do not assume that any lithium battery with a similar connector is compatible.

4. Segway Ninebot E2 Pro: best mainstream all-around commuter

The Segway Ninebot E2 Pro is the sensible choice when “small” means foldable and storable rather than easy to carry up several flights of stairs. At 41.4 pounds, it is much heavier than the three lightweight picks above, but its 10-inch tubeless pneumatic tires offer a more conventional commuter setup.

Segway lists a 15.5-mph top speed, 16.8 miles of range at maximum speed, a 265-pound payload, front drum and rear electronic braking, and an approximately 5.5-hour charge time. Its protection ratings are listed separately: IPX4 for the scooter body and IPX6 for the battery pack. Segway also publishes approximately 21.7 miles in standard mode and 24.9 miles in eco mode.

Why it suits commuting

  • The larger pneumatic tires should be a better fit for ordinary urban pavement than very small solid tires.
  • The conservative 15.5-mph top speed can be easier to manage in crowded commuting environments.
  • Tubeless tires avoid inner tubes while retaining air cushioning.
  • Segway’s mainstream product support may appeal to buyers who prefer an established mass-market platform.

Limitations

At 41.4 pounds, the E2 Pro is not an ultra-light carry-upstairs scooter. It is better for a commute that begins and ends at ground level, includes a ramp or elevator, or allows the scooter to remain secured at both ends.

Always pair Segway’s range number with its test condition. The 16.8-mile figure is associated with maximum-speed riding, while the longer figures come from slower modes. That difference explains why range numbers can appear inconsistent across product pages and manuals.

5. Apollo Air: best comfort-oriented urban alternative

The Apollo Air belongs on the shortlist for riders who want an urban commuter from a specialist scooter company and prefer a more conventional ride platform over the lowest possible carry weight. Apollo’s current comparison and load-limit guidance places the Air at a 220-pound maximum load and positions it for short urban trips, with more powerful Go and City models above it for longer or rougher commutes.

This is the model where buyers should be most careful about model-year details. Apollo’s online materials include multiple lineup and model references, so the current weight, battery, range, tire specification, price, and exact Air version should be confirmed on the product page before publication or purchase.

Why it suits commuting

  • It is designed around ordinary urban trips rather than extreme performance.
  • A specialist brand may be attractive to buyers who value a focused scooter lineup and direct ownership support.
  • Its platform is a better fit for riders who prioritize normal commuter proportions over the minimum possible carry weight.

Limitations

The Air is not as portable as the NIU KQi Air, Unagi Voyager, or Levy Light, and its 220-pound load limit is relatively low. If you must carry the scooter daily, compare its verified current weight with the lighter alternatives before choosing it.

How to choose the right small electric scooter

If you will carry it every day, prioritize weight over folded length

For stairs, trains, elevators, and office storage, the order is straightforward: the NIU KQi Air is the lightest at 26.2 pounds, followed by the Levy Light at approximately 27–28 pounds and the Unagi Voyager at 29.6 pounds. The Segway E2 Pro is foldable but weighs 41.4 pounds, which can become tiring quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check the folded dimensions against your actual storage location. A scooter can be light but awkward to place under a desk, in a closet, or between a car seat and door. If you must lift it one-handed, consider the carrying handle, balance, and whether the folding mechanism locks securely—not just the scale weight.

If charging is difficult, choose a removable battery

The Levy Light is the clear choice when the scooter must stay in a bike room, hallway, or office while the battery comes indoors. A spare approved battery can increase flexibility, but it does not make battery transport automatically risk-free. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removal, storage, charging, and transport.

  • Durable and Reliable: Solid tires handle rough terrain with ease, and the rear drum brake and mechanical handbrake provide dependable stopping power.

For fixed-battery scooters, identify the outlet before buying. A five-hour charge may be irrelevant if you can recharge at work, but inconvenient if the scooter is stored far from a safe indoor outlet.

If punctures worry you, decide whether comfort or puncture resistance matters more

Tire type Advantages Tradeoffs
Solid No conventional air-pressure checks or inner-tube punctures Less cushioning; can transmit more road vibration and may have less wet grip
Tubeless pneumatic Air cushioning with no inner tube; generally more comfortable than solid tires Still needs pressure maintenance and can suffer punctures or leaks
Pneumatic with tube Useful cushioning and often straightforward service Requires pressure checks and carries inner-tube puncture risk

A pump is essential for pneumatic-tire models. Underinflation can reduce efficiency and make handling less predictable; follow the tire and scooter manufacturer’s pressure guidance rather than guessing.

If you are a larger rider, check the total payload

The stated limit includes the rider, clothing, backpack, groceries, and other equipment. NIU lists 265 pounds, Levy 275 pounds, and Segway 265 pounds. Unagi and Apollo Air list 220 pounds. Near the limit, acceleration, hill-climbing, braking distance, and range can all be worse than the headline specifications suggest. Choose some margin rather than treating the maximum as an ideal operating weight.

If range matters, compare test conditions instead of headline miles

Manufacturers do not always publish range under the same conditions. Speed, rider mass, terrain, wind, temperature, tire pressure, riding mode, and stop-and-go traffic all matter. A useful buying method is to treat the claimed range as an upper reference, then select a scooter with meaningful reserve for your actual route.

For a short five-mile each-way commute, a scooter advertised at 8–10 miles per battery may be marginal once hills, cold weather, and battery aging are considered. For a longer route, the NIU’s advertised 30–31 miles or Segway’s slower-mode figures may look more attractive, but neither should be read as a guaranteed real-world result.

If you ride in damp weather, understand IP ratings

IP ratings describe limited resistance to ingress under specified test conditions; they do not make a scooter waterproof. NIU lists IP55. Segway lists IPX4 for the scooter body and IPX6 for the battery pack. Those ratings do not authorize riding through flooding, leaving a scooter in prolonged rain, spraying it with a hose, or charging it while wet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dry the scooter before charging, keep the charging port closed, and follow the model’s storage instructions. Water damage may not be covered simply because a product has an IP rating.

Safety and ownership essentials

Before buying, look for certification of the complete scooter’s electrical system, not merely a certified charger, battery, or individual component. UL Solutions identifies UL 2272 as a relevant standard for many personal e-mobility devices, including pathway e-scooters. A component-level certification is not the same as certification of the complete device, so verify the actual scooter’s certification and the documentation for the exact model.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends using micromobility products designed and certified to applicable consensus safety standards, remaining present while charging, using the supplied charger or an approved replacement, and following the manufacturer’s charging instructions. Never put a lithium battery in household trash or general recycling.

Never buy a universal replacement charger simply because its voltage appears similar. CPSC has warned about incompatible universal chargers for e-scooters and other micromobility products. Voltage, current, connector design, charging protocol, and battery chemistry all matter. Use a charger approved for the exact scooter and battery.

What else you need before commuting

Look for an UL-certified electric scooter when certification is relevant to your purchase, and verify what exactly has been certified. Certification does not replace safe charging, a helmet, visibility equipment, or compliance with local law.

U.S. electric-scooter rules vary by state and locality. Before riding, check the rules where you will actually use the scooter, including speed limits, roadway and sidewalk access, helmet requirements, minimum rider age, registration, and equipment requirements. A helmet may be required in some jurisdictions and strongly advisable even where it is not legally required; this article does not make a nationwide legal claim.

Which scooter should you buy?

  • Choose the NIU KQi Air if the lowest practical carry weight is your main requirement and you want a capable everyday commuter.
  • Choose the Unagi Model One Voyager if you want dual motors, solid puncture-proof tires, and premium portability, and its 220-pound limit and current availability work for you.
  • Choose the Levy Light if removable-battery charging is more valuable than long range per battery.
  • Choose the Segway Ninebot E2 Pro if larger tires and a mainstream design matter more than carrying weight.
  • Choose the Apollo Air if you prefer Apollo’s urban-focused platform, after confirming the exact current model and specifications.

For most commuters who carry a scooter regularly, the NIU KQi Air is the most balanced starting point. For a ground-level commute where comfort and larger tires matter more, the heavier Segway E2 Pro may be a better fit. The right choice is ultimately determined by the route, charging location, rider-and-cargo weight, and whether the scooter must be carried every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the realistic range of a small electric scooter?

It is usually lower than the advertised maximum. Speed, rider and cargo weight, hills, wind, temperature, tire pressure, riding mode, battery age, and stop-and-go traffic all affect range. Compare the manufacturer’s test conditions with your route and keep reserve capacity rather than planning to use the headline number exactly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which small electric scooter is easiest to carry up stairs?

The NIU KQi Air is the lightest of these five at 26.2 pounds. The Levy Light is approximately 27–28 pounds and the Unagi Voyager is 29.6 pounds. The Segway E2 Pro folds but weighs 41.4 pounds, so it is better for storage than frequent stair carrying.

Are solid tires better than pneumatic tires?

Neither is universally better. Solid tires, such as those on the Unagi Voyager, avoid conventional punctures and pressure checks but provide less cushioning. Pneumatic tires are generally more forgiving over rough pavement but require pressure maintenance and can puncture. Levy offers both configurations depending on the model setup.

Can I ride a small electric scooter in the rain?

An IP rating is limited ingress protection, not a promise that a scooter is waterproof. NIU lists IP55, while Segway lists IPX4 for the scooter body and IPX6 for the battery pack. Avoid flooding and prolonged rain, keep the charging port closed, dry the scooter before charging, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can I use a spare battery or another charger?

Use only a battery or charger approved for the exact scooter and battery configuration. Do not use a universal charger because its voltage or connector appears similar. Incompatible charging equipment can create fire hazards. For the Levy Light, confirm that any replacement or spare battery matches the exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a small electric scooter suitable for a long commute?

It can be, but calculate the route conservatively. A scooter advertised for 8–10 miles per battery may be marginal for a five-mile-each-way trip once hills, cold weather, traffic, and battery aging are included. Verify whether your route permits e-scooters, identify a safe charging location, and choose a model with reserve range and a suitable rider limit.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The NIU KQi Air is the best all-around small electric scooter for commuters who must carry and store it frequently. The Levy Light is the practical specialist choice when the battery must come indoors separately, while the Segway Ninebot E2 Pro makes more sense when larger tires and mainstream commuter design outweigh its 41.4-pound carry weight. Whatever you choose, verify the exact model’s certification, use the supplied or approved charger, and check local riding rules before your first trip.
