Two related generations filled the nameplate gap in North America: the KJ Liberty from 2002–2007 and the KK Liberty from 2008–2012. Jeep sold those same basic KJ and KK vehicles as Cherokee in many overseas markets.
That regional naming difference is why Cherokee generation counts vary. For a U.S. buyer, owner, or parts shopper, the clearest chronology is SJ, XJ, Liberty KJ, Liberty KK, KL, and KM. The Cherokee name was absent from the U.S. market for 2024 and 2025 before returning as an all-new hybrid SUV for 2026.

Jeep Cherokee generations at a glance
The Cherokee changed dramatically over its history. The first-generation SJ was a full-size, body-on-frame SUV related to the Wagoneer. The second-generation XJ became a compact unibody SUV and was sold in two- and four-door forms. After the XJ ended, the Liberty KJ and KK served as its North American successors, although many international markets continued using the Cherokee name. The KL brought the Cherokee name back to the United States as a compact crossover for 2014, while the KM is the all-new hybrid-electric Cherokee introduced for 2026.
| Generation | Internal code | U.S. model years | U.S. name | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | SJ | 1974–1983 | Jeep Cherokee | Full-size, body-on-frame SUV derived from the Wagoneer/SJ family |
| Second | XJ | 1984–2001 | Jeep Cherokee | Compact two- or four-door SUV with unibody/UniFrame construction |
| Liberty-era successor | KJ | 2002–2007 | Jeep Liberty | Compact SUV; sold as Cherokee in many overseas markets |
| Liberty-era successor | KK | 2008–2012 in the U.S. | Jeep Liberty | More upright compact SUV; Cherokee branding continued in many overseas markets |
| Third U.S.-market Cherokee generation after the hiatus | KL | 2014–2023 | Jeep Cherokee | Compact crossover on the Compact U.S. Wide platform |
| Sixth overall Cherokee generation | KM | 2026–present* | Jeep Cherokee | New hybrid-electric compact SUV |
*The KM model-year range is current as of August 11, 2026 and should be refreshed in future editions.

Why Cherokee generation counts differ
There is no single universally used generation count because the KJ and KK were called Liberty in the United States and Canada but commonly retained the Cherokee name in other markets. Some sources group KJ and KK together as one Liberty/Cherokee family. Others count them as two successive Cherokee generations.
There are two accurate ways to describe the history:
- U.S. Cherokee-badged generations: SJ, XJ, KL, and KM.
- Broader global Cherokee lineage: SJ, XJ, KJ, KK, KL, and KM, for six generations when KJ and KK are counted separately.
For vehicle identification, the code and market matter more than the number. A 2004 U.S.-market vehicle is a Jeep Liberty KJ, while a similarly specified vehicle sold in a market that used the Cherokee name may be identified as a Cherokee KJ.

The SJ was the original Jeep Cherokee. Introduced for the 1974 model year, it was a full-size, body-on-frame SUV based on the Wagoneer/SJ architecture. It was physically and mechanically a different type of vehicle from the compact Cherokee that followed.
Jeep positioned the Cherokee as the sportier counterpart to the Wagoneer, with two-door styling emphasized early in the run. The Cherokee Chief and other trim and package variations appeared during the SJ period. Four-wheel-drive capability and truck-based construction were central to the vehicle’s identity.
What distinguishes an SJ?
- Full-size proportions rather than the compact dimensions of an XJ.
- Conventional body-on-frame construction.
- Close lineage to the Wagoneer/SJ family.
- Primarily associated with two-door sport-utility styling and classic Jeep four-wheel-drive hardware.
Important identification point: a 1974–1983 Cherokee is an SJ. It is not an early version of the XJ, and SJ parts, body panels, suspension components, and service information should not be assumed to interchange with a 1984–2001 Cherokee.
Second generation: Jeep Cherokee XJ, 1984–2001
The XJ began with the 1984 model year and continued in U.S. production through 2001. It was the Cherokee’s biggest engineering transformation: Jeep moved from a full-size body-on-frame SUV to a compact SUV using integrated unibody, or UniFrame, construction.
The XJ was available as both a two-door and a four-door. Its compact footprint, upright shape, four-wheel-drive capability, and practical interior helped establish the formula that many later compact SUVs followed. Jeep’s XJ history also includes shift-on-the-fly full-time four-wheel-drive technology on applicable systems and configurations.
Useful XJ model-year divisions
These are practical styling and parts-shopping eras, not separate generations:
- 1984–1986: Early XJ production.
- 1987–1996: Later pre-facelift XJ models, including the familiar 4.0-liter-era vehicles.
- 1997–2001: Facelifted XJ models with revised exterior styling, an updated interior, and later powertrain and equipment changes.
The 1997 update was substantial enough to matter when buying body, interior, electrical, or trim parts, but it did not create a new Cherokee generation. All of these vehicles remain XJs, and the complete U.S. XJ span is 1984–2001.
What distinguishes an XJ?
- Compact dimensions compared with the SJ.
- Two-door and four-door body styles.
- Unibody/UniFrame construction rather than a separate conventional frame.
- Long production run with important early, pre-facelift, and post-1997 parts differences.
For restoration or repair work, do not search only for a generic Cherokee part. Identify the year range, body style, engine, transmission, and four-wheel-drive system before ordering. An 1984–2001 Cherokee XJ repair manual is useful precisely because the XJ’s long run contains year-to-year equipment and parts changes.
Liberty-era Cherokee equivalents: KJ and KK
When the XJ ended in the United States after the 2001 model year, Jeep replaced it with the Liberty. The Liberty was not sold under the Cherokee name in North America, but the same basic vehicles were marketed as Cherokee in many international markets. This is the source of much of the confusion in global Cherokee histories.
KJ: Jeep Liberty in the U.S., Cherokee in many overseas markets, 2002–2007
The KJ covered the 2002–2007 model years. In the U.S., it should normally be listed as Jeep Liberty KJ, not Jeep Cherokee. In markets that retained the Cherokee name, it may appear in catalogs and registration records as Cherokee KJ.
The KJ represented another major change from the XJ. It used independent front suspension and offered available Select-Trac and Command-Trac four-wheel-drive systems. It was still a compact Jeep SUV, but its construction, suspension, and service requirements were not simply a continuation of the XJ.
KK: Jeep Liberty in the U.S., 2008–2012
The KK replaced the KJ for the 2008 model year. In the United States, it remained the Jeep Liberty through the 2012 model year. International Cherokee histories commonly describe the KK as a Cherokee from 2008 through 2013, depending on the market and source.

The KK was more upright in appearance than the KJ. Sport and Limited trims, along with several special editions, appeared during its run. For North American records, the practical range is 2008–2012 Jeep Liberty KK. For an international history, it is reasonable to label the vehicle Cherokee KK/Liberty KK and note that some overseas references extend the run through 2013.
How to handle KJ and KK when shopping for parts
Use the name sold in the market where the vehicle was built and sold, then add the internal code. A U.S. parts search should generally use “2002–2007 Liberty KJ” or “2008–2012 Liberty KK.” An imported vehicle may require “Cherokee KJ” or “Cherokee KK” instead. The name alone is not enough: confirm the exact year, engine, drivetrain, transmission, and market.
Rank #3
That distinction also applies to manuals. A document labeled Cherokee may be correct for an overseas KJ or KK but not necessarily for a U.S.-market Liberty with different equipment or market-specific specifications.
Third U.S.-market Cherokee generation: KL, 2014–2023
The Cherokee name returned to the United States for the 2014 model year after Jeep used Liberty as the North American name from 2002 through 2012. The KL was an all-new compact crossover and was not a renamed XJ or a continuation of the Liberty KJ/KK.
The KL used the Compact U.S. Wide platform, co-developed by Chrysler and Fiat. It was the first Jeep vehicle on that platform. Depending on trim and equipment, Jeep offered Active Drive I, Active Drive II, and Active Drive Lock four-wheel-drive systems. The KL also introduced rear-axle disconnect technology and a nine-speed automatic transmission to the Cherokee line.
KL model-year changes
- 2014–2018: Early KL models.
- 2019–2023: Later KL models after a significant 2019 refresh.
The 2019 update changed appearance and equipment but did not create a new generation. The complete U.S. KL model-year range is 2014–2023.
KL recall check
Some KL model years have been affected by safety recalls and investigations, so a general model-year article cannot establish whether an individual vehicle is safe or covered. For example, NHTSA documented a 2023 recall affecting certain 2014–2016 Cherokees with power liftgates. An electrical short in the power-liftgate module could cause a fire.
Check the vehicle’s VIN through the official NHTSA recall lookup before buying or repairing a used KL. The VIN-based result is more reliable than assuming every vehicle of a particular year is included, and it can reveal open recalls specific to that vehicle.

For maintenance and DIY work, a 2014–2023 Cherokee KL service manual is a better match than an all-purpose Cherokee book. Its coverage should still be checked against the exact year and powertrain.
U.S. model-year hiatus: 2024 and 2025
There was no U.S. Jeep Cherokee model year for 2024 or 2025. The KL ended with the 2023 model year, and the Cherokee returned for 2026 after a three-year hiatus described in contemporary coverage as an all-new redesign.
Therefore:
- 2023 is the final U.S. KL Cherokee.
- 2024 and 2025 are not ordinary Cherokee carryover years in the U.S. chronology.
- 2026 begins the new KM generation.
A registration, import, fleet, or inventory record can create apparent exceptions, but those should be checked against the vehicle’s market and model designation rather than added to the standard U.S. generation list.

Sixth overall generation: Jeep Cherokee KM, 2026–present
The Cherokee returned for 2026 as an all-new hybrid-electric compact SUV. The official 2026 Jeep fleet buyer’s guide identifies an all-new 1.6-liter turbo hybrid-electric powertrain paired with an electronic variable transmission.

The 2026 Cherokee is offered in four listed trims:
- Base
- Laredo
- Limited
- Overland
For catalog and repair purposes, KM is the useful internal code. Mopar’s model-code information identifies KM with the Jeep Cherokee/Wagoneer S code, while listing KL as Cherokee and KJ/KK as Liberty. Because model-code conventions can be catalog-specific, verify the vehicle’s exact model and equipment when ordering parts or documentation.
2026 ownership and accessory considerations
The 2026 buyer’s guide lists Mopar interior-protection, finishing, and trailer-tow equipment, including cargo, floor-protection, splash-guard, and towing accessories. If you are equipping a new vehicle, Mopar Cherokee accessories should be selected by the 2026 Cherokee’s trim and configuration—not by assuming that an accessory from a KL, KK, or XJ will fit.
A 2026 KM is mechanically unrelated to the classic XJ and should not be treated as a direct parts or service successor simply because both carry the Cherokee name.

How to identify a Cherokee generation before buying parts
- Start with the model year and market. A 2004 U.S. vehicle is a Liberty KJ; an overseas vehicle from the same family may be called Cherokee KJ.
- Identify the internal code. The key codes are SJ, XJ, KJ, KK, KL, and KM.
- Separate refreshes from generations. The 1997 XJ and 2019 KL updates are important parts and styling divisions, but neither is a new generation.
- Confirm the body style and drivetrain. This is especially important for XJ parts and for four-wheel-drive components on KJ, KK, and KL vehicles.
- Use the VIN when safety or exact fitment matters. A VIN-based recall result and a fitment catalog tied to the VIN are more dependable than a generic year range.
Do not use “Grand Cherokee” as a substitute for Cherokee. Grand Cherokee is a separate Jeep nameplate and platform family, even though the names are similar.
Repair manuals and documentation by generation
There is no single repair manual that covers every Cherokee generation. The mechanical differences between a body-on-frame SJ, a unibody XJ, the Liberty-era KJ and KK, the crossover KL, and the hybrid KM are too substantial.
For an older Cherokee or a repair project, begin with a Jeep Cherokee repair manual, then narrow the result to the correct code and year range. Haynes coverage specifically separates 1984–2001 and 2014–2023 Cherokee service information, which illustrates why a generic title must not be treated as universal.
An Jeep Cherokee owner’s manual is more appropriate for operating instructions, maintenance schedules, warning lights, fluid information, and factory specifications. A comprehensive factory service manual is the deeper choice for diagnostic procedures, wiring, torque specifications, and detailed repair instructions. Check the edition and exact model-year coverage before purchase; print availability varies sharply by year and market.
For replacement components, Cherokee-specific replacement parts should be filtered by generation, exact year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, body style, and sometimes production date. A brake, suspension, electrical, or four-wheel-drive part that fits an XJ should not be assumed to fit a KL or KM.

If the question is strictly about Cherokee-badged vehicles sold in the United States, the answer is:
Best Value
- SJ: 1974–1983
- XJ: 1984–2001
- KL: 2014–2023
- KM: 2026–present, as of August 11, 2026
If the question concerns the complete global Cherokee lineage, add the Liberty-era vehicles: KJ for 2002–2007 and KK for 2008–2013 in some international histories. In the U.S., those vehicles were sold as Liberty from 2002 through 2012, and there was no usual U.S. Cherokee or Liberty model year in 2013.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Jeep Cherokee generations are there?
The cleanest U.S. buyer-facing answer is four Cherokee-badged generations: SJ, XJ, KL, and KM. A broader global history counts six when the KJ and KK Liberty-era vehicles are treated as separate Cherokee generations because they were sold as Cherokee in many overseas markets.
Was there a 2013 Jeep Cherokee?
There was no usual U.S. Cherokee or Liberty model year for 2013. Some international Cherokee histories include 2013 as a KK Cherokee year, so the answer depends on the market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs a 2002–2007 Jeep Liberty the same as a Cherokee?
The KJ Liberty is the North American version of a vehicle sold as Cherokee in many international markets. For U.S. parts, registration, and repair research, identify it as a Jeep Liberty KJ.
What is the newest Jeep Cherokee generation?
The KM is the newest generation. It begins with the 2026 model year and returns as a hybrid-electric compact SUV. Its 2026 powertrain is an all-new 1.6-liter turbo hybrid-electric system paired with an electronic variable transmission.
Are the 1997 XJ and 2019 KL separate Cherokee generations?
No. Both are significant refresh points within existing generations. The 1997 model is a facelifted XJ, and the 2019 model is a refreshed KL; neither starts a new generation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: U.S. Cherokee history runs from SJ (1974–1983) to XJ (1984–2001), skips to KL (2014–2023), and resumes with the hybrid KM (2026–present as of August 11, 2026). The KJ and KK filled the U.S. gap as Liberty from 2002–2012 but were commonly sold as Cherokee overseas. Always identify the market, internal code, exact year, and drivetrain before buying parts or manuals.
