The best shocks for towing a travel trailer are the ones cataloged for your exact tow vehicle and matched to how often you tow—not a universal brand or model. For occasional changes in load, consider application-specific load-adjusting shocks; for frequent towing, compare approved air-adjustable options; for firmer control at stock ride height, look at vehicle-specific performance dampers. Shocks can improve suspension control, but they do not increase your vehicle’s towing capacity or payload rating.
What shocks can—and cannot—change when towing
Shocks damp suspension movement: they help control bouncing, rocking and oscillation. The right application may make a loaded vehicle feel more composed, but damping is not the same as supporting additional payload or authorizing a heavier trailer. Monroe’s comparison information says its load-adjusting shocks do not support weight, even while describing improved control under load; its weight-related claims are subject to the vehicle’s suspension, tires and transmission. Check your owner’s manual and stay within every vehicle, hitch, tire and trailer rating.
If the tow vehicle sits low at the rear, first distinguish ordinary suspension motion from excessive sag. A shock upgrade is not a substitute for diagnosing worn or damaged suspension parts, distributing the trailer’s load correctly, or using a properly rated support component when the vehicle maker permits one.
Choose by towing pattern and desired ride
| Option | Best fit to investigate | What to verify | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monroe Load-Adjusting shocks | Light trucks that occasionally tow or carry varying loads, as Monroe describes them | Exact vehicle fitment, coil-spring feature, and how the ride behaves during normal unloaded driving | Monroe says they may reduce sag with up to 1,200 lb of added weight, subject to vehicle suspension, tires and transmission. The figure is not an added payload allowance, and the manufacturer’s table says the shocks do not support weight. Monroe product information. |
| Monroe Max-Air | Vehicles that consistently haul or tow, where the exact application is approved | Vehicle fitment, adjustment method, air-hose accessories and the product’s inflation instructions | Monroe describes adjustment up to 150 PSI and ride-height maintenance with up to 1,200 lb of additional weight, subject to vehicle limits. These figures do not override ratings or specify a universal pressure. Monroe Max-Air information. |
| Bilstein B6 | Drivers seeking firmer damping at original ride height, including for towing when the vehicle is listed | Catalog application and compatibility with the vehicle’s existing springs and ride height | Bilstein says B6 is firmer than OE and that towing tuning is vehicle-specific. It is not a universal load-support solution. Bilstein B6. |
| Monroe Gas-Magnum or Magnum | Applications identified by Monroe’s guide, including certain midsize/full-size trucks and vans or load-oriented uses | Exact catalog match and whether the vehicle needs a shock or a complete strut assembly | A product-family description does not establish fitment for every truck or van. Occasional towing: compare load-adjusting shocks
For a light truck whose load changes between ordinary driving and occasional towing, Monroe positions its Load-Adjusting shocks as an option. They use a calibrated coil spring and application-specific valving, according to Monroe. Consider how the vehicle rides unloaded as well as how it behaves with the trailer attached; an added spring feature is not a guarantee of a particular ride or sag reduction on every vehicle.
#1 Best Overall
- SPRING ASSIST TOWING SHOCKS: Gabriel Load Carrier shocks combine shock absorber and spring technology to help reduce ride height loss under ongoing loaded conditions for towing and hauling applications
- UP TO 500 LBS LOAD SUPPORT: Variable-rate rear coil springs provide up to 500 lbs of load capacity per pair to help improve stability and maintain ride height while towing or hauling cargo; does not increase vehicle payload rating
- HEAVY-DUTY CONSTRUCTION: Drawn-Over-Mandrel (D.O.M.) pressure cylinder reduces internal wear, while the chromed piston rod helps resist corrosion and provides consistent sealing performance
- LEAK-RESISTANT DESIGN: Engineered with a leak-proof piston seal to help extend shock life and maintain dependable ride control under demanding towing and hauling conditions
- FITMENT: Direct fit for Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500, Tahoe, Yukon; Ram 1500/3500; Nissan Titan
Frequent towing: check whether air adjustment is approved
For a vehicle that regularly tows or hauls, Monroe positions Max-Air as an adjustable option. Pressure can be changed as needed, but the correct setting comes from the instructions for the exact shock and vehicle—not from applying the product’s maximum pressure by default. Monroe says air-hose accessory kits vary by application, so confirm what the installation requires before ordering.
Firmer control at stock height: consider a listed B6 application
Bilstein describes B6 as a firmer-than-OE damper that works at original ride height on existing springs. It says its applications are developed vehicle by vehicle and describes towing control under high tongue load. Those are manufacturer claims, not an independent comparison proving B6 will be the smoothest choice for every tow combination. Verify the exact vehicle in Bilstein’s catalog.

Other Monroe families: treat the catalog as decisive
Monroe’s buying guide identifies Gas-Magnum for midsize and full-size trucks and vans, and Magnum products for load-oriented applications. Those broad descriptions help narrow a search, but do not replace an exact application lookup. A vehicle may require a shock, a strut, or a complete assembly; select only the part type and fitment specified for its configuration.
How to identify the right application
- Record the tow vehicle configuration. Note its year, make, model, trim and relevant suspension details. If a vehicle has multiple suspension packages or configurations, do not assume they share the same shock.
- Look up the vehicle in the manufacturer’s catalog. Use Monroe’s or Bilstein’s vehicle-specific fitment information, and confirm that the part is approved for the exact application. Do not choose by brand name or a broad “truck” category alone.
- Describe your actual use. Decide whether towing is occasional or frequent, whether you also haul varying cargo, and whether the main concern is suspension movement, rear sag, or ride behavior when unloaded.
- Compare the product’s function with the problem. Firmer damping targets motion control; load-adjusting designs address changing-load behavior; air-adjustable shocks add a pressure adjustment where the application supports it. None independently changes the vehicle’s ratings.
- Check vehicle and product instructions. Review the owner’s manual and the shock manufacturer’s limits and installation guidance. For air shocks, follow the exact part’s pressure instructions and determine whether a separate hose kit is needed.
Replace shocks in axle pairs
Monroe recommends replacing both shocks or struts on an axle together. Pairing a new unit with a worn one can create uneven damping; Monroe warns that this mismatch may contribute to accelerated wear. If only one side appears faulty, have both sides assessed before deciding what to replace. Monroe’s guidance on replacing shocks in pairs.

What the available product claims establish
The manufacturer pages describe intended applications and product features; they do not establish an independent, head-to-head towing comfort result. Monroe’s figures are conditional product claims, and Bilstein’s damping descriptions are application-specific company statements. A larger specification or an advertised weight figure alone does not identify the best shock for a particular vehicle-trailer combination.
