There is no evidence-based best-to-worst ranking among these semi-truck camera systems: they serve different jobs, from recording local video to showing a stitched overhead view or feeding cameras into a fleet platform. Choose by the view and workflow you need, then confirm truck fit, recording behavior, and installation details with the manufacturer.
How to choose a semi-truck camera system
Start with the problem you want to solve. A road-facing camera may help capture incidents; side and rear cameras can add visibility around a truck and trailer; a 360-degree system is designed to help with low-speed maneuvering; and fleet-connected systems can put video into a broader operational workflow. These functions are not interchangeable.
- Coverage: Identify whether you need road-facing, driver-facing, side, rear, trailer, cargo, or stitched around-vehicle views.
- Recording: Ask how many channels record at once, what storage is included, how events are captured, and how footage is played back.
- Access: Distinguish a local monitor and DVR from remote access or a telematics-connected fleet video platform.
- Fit and installation: Verify compatibility with the truck and trailer, mounts, cable lengths, power requirements, display placement, and whether professional installation is needed.
- Operating conditions: Request model-specific details about weather, low-light performance, vibration, lens cleaning, camera-failure behavior, and driver attention.
Five systems to consider, matched to the job
This is a use-case shortlist, not a comparative test. The available product descriptions do not establish shared test conditions, comparative image quality or failure rates, or total ownership costs.
1. Kocchi configurable camera and DVR system — flexible local coverage
Kocchi describes configurable multi-camera systems that can combine front, side, rear, cargo, dash, or 360-degree views with an in-cab display and DVR. Configurations differ in channel count, storage, recording, and playback. Treat the exact package as something to verify: ask which cameras and recorder are included, whether all desired views record concurrently, and whether cabling and mounts suit your truck. 2. Kocchi SurroundView HD 360 — low-speed maneuvering
This option is designed for situations such as loading areas and tight yards. Kocchi describes four cameras stitched into a bird’s-eye view, with 2D and 3D modes and local recording. 3. EROAD Clarity Edge Multicam — fleet-platform workflow
EROAD says Clarity Edge Multicam can add up to three external cameras to an AI dashcam. This makes it a candidate for fleets considering camera views within a fleet platform rather than a kit centered primarily on local DVR recording. 4. Samsara AI Multicam — multiple auxiliary feeds
Samsara says AI Multicam supports up to four 1080p auxiliary camera feeds, or up to eight with Dual AI Multicam, alongside the dashcam. Confirm the product configuration, regional availability, and commercial terms directly with Samsara before comparing it with a local recorder. See Samsara’s AI Multicam information.
5. Freightliner MirrorCam — OEM-integrated mirror view
For applicable Freightliner trucks, MirrorCam is an integrated electronic rear-view system rather than a general-purpose multi-camera recorder. A January 2025 Daimler Truck North America bulletin describes three in-cab displays, low-light/infrared adjustment, and trailer distance lines. The bulletin also states: “Currently, our factory installed MirrorCam System doesn’t have video recording capability or link to Detroit Connect.” Do not treat this factory-installed system as a replacement for a dashcam or fleet video recorder. Another option: Convoy Technologies MirrorVue
Convoy describes MirrorVue as an electronic rear-view camera system, with an optional backup camera and independent DVR files per camera. Convoy’s product page also claims fuel savings of up to 2%; the page provides no methodology or independent validation for that figure, so it should be treated as a vendor claim rather than a verified expected result. - Map the views. List the blind areas or recording needs, including whether the trailer, cargo area, or road ahead must be covered.
- Confirm the exact package. Get the camera count, recorder or platform, display, storage, cables, mounts, and power requirements in writing.
- Check recording and access. Ask whether every camera records at the same time, how incidents are captured, how long footage is retained, and whether access is local or remote.
- Check vehicle fit. Provide the truck make, model, year, cab, trailer setup, and intended mounting positions; verify cable routing and display placement.
- Plan for failure and upkeep. Ask what happens if a camera or connection fails, how the driver is alerted, and what cleaning or inspection is required.
- Verify legal requirements. Before using cameras to replace required mirrors, confirm current federal, state, vehicle, and manufacturer requirements for the specific truck and system.
FMCSA’s MirrorEye document concerns a historical exemption-related agency matter for a named system; it is not blanket authorization for aftermarket camera systems to replace mirrors on any vehicle. Review the FMCSA document and confirm the rules that apply to the intended installation.
