Four new sedans currently have at least one variant listed below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom in India: Tata Tigor, Hyundai Aura, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze. The price ceiling applies to the listed ex-showroom prices, not the amount you finally pay. Registration, road tax, insurance and other charges can push an on-road quote above ₹9 lakh, depending on your city and chosen variant.
For a sensible shortlist, start with the exact city, fuel type and gearbox you need, then request a written dealer quote for that specific trim. The comparison below uses the currently published ranges available for these models and flags where only part of a model’s range fits the budget.

The table shows the published ex-showroom ranges. A range ending above ₹9 lakh does not disqualify a model entirely; it means only its lower-priced variants qualify.

What “under ₹9 lakh” means in this comparison
Automotive price lists commonly separate the ex-showroom amount from the on-road amount. Ex-showroom is the published vehicle price before charges imposed or collected at registration. Your final invoice can include insurance, registration, road tax and selected accessories. Maruti states that its on-road amount varies by city and includes those categories; Hyundai likewise notes that location, taxes, registration and insurance change the final figure.
Consequently, there are two different buying questions:
- Which cars are listed below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom? The four models in the table answer this question.
- Which car can I buy for a total on-road budget of ₹9 lakh? That cannot be answered from the published ranges alone. Ask a dealer for a city- and variant-specific quotation before deciding that a car fits.
When requesting a quote, specify the fuel, transmission, exact variant, registration location and whether you want the dealer’s insurance or your own insurer. Keep the quote dated because prices, offers, inventory and variant availability can change.
Tata Tigor: the only fully sub-₹9-lakh range in the shortlist
Autocar India’s listing places the Tata Tigor between ₹5.49 lakh and ₹8.74 lakh ex-showroom. On that published range, even the highest listed price remains below the ₹9-lakh ceiling. The comparison shows both petrol and CNG versions.

Why it belongs on the list
- The complete listed range is below the stated ex-showroom cap, so you can begin with more variants before narrowing by equipment or fuel.
- A factory-fitted CNG choice is shown for buyers whose regular routes and refuelling access suit that fuel.
- The broader comparison includes manual and automatic choices, but the supplied data does not map each gearbox to every Tigor trim. Confirm the exact transmission on the current Tata price list.
Questions to settle with the dealer
- Which Tigor variants are currently available with CNG in your city?
- Is the automatic option offered on the particular variant whose ex-showroom price is below your ceiling?
- What are the registration, insurance and road-tax amounts for that fuel and transmission combination?
Do not assume that a range-wide price result means every colour, fuel or gearbox is in stock. A written quotation should identify the variant code and powertrain.
Hyundai Aura: petrol or factory-fitted Hy-CNG below the cap
Autocar India’s comparison lists the Aura at ₹6.00–8.54 lakh ex-showroom. Hyundai’s official page reports a starting price of ₹5,99,990. The small difference is a rounding and listing-date issue rather than evidence of two different cars; use the current official price list and your dealer’s quote for the amount payable.
Powertrain choices
Hyundai describes the Aura with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, manual and AMT choices, and factory-fitted Hy-CNG variants. The practical decision is not simply “petrol versus CNG”: confirm that the gearbox you want is offered on the CNG or petrol trim that remains below your budget in your city.
How to evaluate the Aura at this budget
- Compare the ex-showroom price of the exact manual or AMT variant, not the starting price of the range.
- For Hy-CNG, check local pump availability and the expected route pattern before accepting a higher purchase price or different equipment level.
- Have the dealer separate vehicle price, insurance, registration, road tax and accessories so you can see what moved the on-road total.
The cited figures establish price and configuration choices, but they do not establish a winner for safety, reliability, service cost or real-world fuel economy. Those issues require comparable, current evidence for the exact variants.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire: broad choice, but trim selection is decisive
Autocar India’s comparison gives the Dzire a ₹6.26–9.31 lakh ex-showroom range. Maruti’s official Arena page lists a ₹6,30,600 starting price, while an official Dehradun variant page lists the ZXi+ AMT at ₹9,41,300 ex-showroom. The figures demonstrate why a model-level “under ₹9 lakh” label is not enough: lower variants can fit while a higher trim and automatic combination can exceed the cap.
Fuel and gearbox combinations
Maruti lists petrol and S-CNG versions, with manual and automatic options. Treat these as a menu to verify, not as proof that every combination is available on every trim. Ask for the exact variant name, fuel, gearbox and ex-showroom amount on the same quotation.
Mileage claim: use it correctly
Autocar India publishes a claimed Dzire mileage range of 24.8–33.7 kmpl and describes it as the highest mileage in its compared under-₹10-lakh set. This is a source-published claim, not an independent real-world test. The range spans petrol and CNG variants, so it is not one directly comparable fuel figure. Traffic, load, weather, tyre pressure and driving style can produce different results.
Who should start with the Dzire?
It is a logical first check for buyers who want to choose among petrol, S-CNG, manual and automatic configurations while keeping at least one variant below ₹9 lakh. It is not a reason to assume the most expensive trim qualifies. Build the shortlist from the exact lower-priced variants, then compare their equipment with similarly priced Aura, Tigor and Amaze versions.

Honda Amaze: qualify the lower trims, not the whole range
The listed Amaze range is ₹7.48–10.00 lakh ex-showroom. That makes it a partial-range candidate: the lower-priced portion is under ₹9 lakh, while the upper portion is not.
How to check whether an Amaze fits
- Request the current price list for your state or city.
- Identify the specific manual and automatic variants priced below ₹9 lakh ex-showroom.
- Obtain an on-road quotation for each qualifying variant, including insurance and registration.
- Compare the equipment and ownership terms of those qualifying trims with the Tigor, Aura and Dzire variants at similar prices.
The supplied comparison confirms petrol, manual and automatic availability at the model level, but it does not establish which exact Amaze trims fall below ₹9 lakh in every location. Do not infer a qualifying trim from the model’s starting price alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the constraint that matters most
1. Decide whether the ceiling is ex-showroom or on-road
If ₹9 lakh is the total amount available, begin with a lower ex-showroom target because registration, road tax, insurance and other charges remain. The amount varies by city, so a car that appears comfortably below the cap in a national listing may not remain there after local charges. If ₹9 lakh is only your ex-showroom ceiling, all four models can remain in consideration, subject to the qualifying variant.

The cited sources show factory-fitted CNG versions for the Tigor, Aura and Dzire. CNG is most useful when your normal routes have dependable access to the fuel and the variant’s price still works after local charges. Petrol may be simpler for drivers without predictable CNG access. The available figures do not provide a common running-cost or real-world economy test, so do not rank one fuel as universally cheaper from these figures alone.

3. Select the gearbox before comparing trims
Manual and automatic or AMT choices are listed across the shortlist, but availability is variant-specific. A low starting price may apply to a manual while the automatic begins higher. Write down your required gearbox first, then filter the variants. For an AMT or automatic, ask the dealer to identify the transmission in the written variant description rather than relying on a verbal “automatic available” statement.
4. Compare like with like
Compare petrol with petrol or CNG with CNG, and manual with manual or automatic with automatic wherever possible. A range-wide comparison can hide the fact that one model’s qualifying trim is a base version while another’s is more highly equipped. The available evidence does not provide a consistent all-model feature or safety table, so verify current official specifications before treating equipment as a deciding advantage.
5. Keep ownership questions separate from the price shortlist
Service cost, reliability, resale value and real-world mileage matter, but the supplied figures do not support a comparable ranking on those grounds. Ask each manufacturer or dealer for the service schedule and warranty terms for the exact variant, and seek comparable local ownership information before assigning a winner.

A practical process for getting the right quote
- Set the budget basis. Write “₹9 lakh ex-showroom” or “₹9 lakh total on-road.” Do not use the two interchangeably.
- Choose the powertrain. Record petrol or factory-fitted CNG, and note where you normally refuel.
- Choose the transmission. Select manual, automatic or AMT before asking for prices.
- Request the current variant list. Use the manufacturer’s current price list for your state and city, not an undated search result.
- Get an itemised quotation. It should show ex-showroom price, insurance, registration, road tax, accessories and any applicable offer separately.
- Check the variant code and stock. Confirm that the quoted fuel and gearbox combination is actually available and that the quote is for a new vehicle.
- Recalculate the total. Remove optional accessories you do not want and compare insurance on an equivalent basis.
- Test the exact configuration. A test drive in a different fuel or gearbox does not answer how your chosen version behaves.
Common mistakes that make a “under ₹9 lakh” list misleading
- Calling an ex-showroom price an on-road price. This ignores city-dependent registration, taxes and insurance.
- Using the starting price as the automatic price. The cheapest manual and a higher-priced AMT may be far apart.
- Applying a model’s entire range to every variant. The Dzire and Amaze both extend above ₹9 lakh in the listed comparisons.
- Treating a mileage claim as test data. The Dzire’s 24.8–33.7 kmpl figure is a published claim spanning petrol and CNG, not an independent road test.
- Assuming national availability. Prices, offers, variant availability and dealer inventory can change by location and date.
- Comparing different fuels without stating the difference. CNG and petrol figures should not be presented as one directly comparable economy result.
- Declaring a safety or ownership winner without evidence. The available material does not establish a consistent safety, long-term reliability, service-cost or resale ranking.
How the shortlist changes with your priorities
| Your priority | Models to check first | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Every listed variant below the ex-showroom ceiling | Tata Tigor | Exact fuel, gearbox, stock and on-road total. |
| Petrol or factory-fitted CNG with manual/AMT choices | Hyundai Aura | Whether the desired gearbox and fuel are paired on a qualifying trim. |
| Broad petrol/S-CNG and manual/automatic menu | Maruti Suzuki Dzire | Trim price; higher variants and the ZXi+ AMT exceed the cap in the cited listings. |
| Honda sedan whose lower-priced variants fit | Honda Amaze | Which exact local trims are below ₹9 lakh and their on-road totals. |
This is a starting order for investigation, not an overall ranking. The best choice depends on the variant you can actually buy, the local on-road amount and your fuel and gearbox requirements.
Bottom line
For a strict ex-showroom interpretation, the Tigor, Aura, Dzire and lower-priced Amaze variants form the current new-sedan shortlist below ₹9 lakh in India. Tigor is the only model in the listed comparison whose entire listed range stays below the ceiling; Aura is also listed entirely below it, while Dzire and Amaze require careful trim selection. Before paying a booking amount, replace the national range with a dated, itemised quote for your city and exact fuel-and-gearbox combination.
