Short answer: The Compustar CS920-S is the best choice for straightforward remote starting, while the Compustar CSX4905-S is the strongest all-around option if you want two-way confirmation and smartphone control. Choose the Compustar CS7900-AS or Viper 5706V when integrated security matters, and look at the Fortin EVO-ONE when professional, vehicle-specific integration is the priority.
This is a 2022-era buying guide, not a claim that these are the newest or easiest-to-source systems in 2026. Aftermarket remote-starter models, cellular services, retailer inventory, and installation policies change. Before ordering, confirm the exact year, make, model, trim, transmission, key type, current product availability, and installation requirements.

Its one-way design is the important trade-off. You press the start button, but the remote does not report back whether the vehicle received the command or completed the start sequence. That is perfectly adequate if you are usually close to the car and want to warm or cool it before walking outside. It is less useful if the car is parked far away or behind several walls and you need confirmation.

Compustar lists the CS920-S for North American availability and directs buyers to an authorized dealer to confirm compatibility. Treat that instruction seriously: the bundle should not be assumed to include every vehicle-specific bypass module, T-harness, or programming step your car may require. The CS920-S is best described as a straightforward remote-start system, not a universally beginner-friendly DIY kit.
Best balance of range, confirmation, and connected control: Compustar CSX4905-S
The Compustar CSX4905-S is the strongest all-around recommendation for buyers who want more than a basic one-way remote. It uses a two-way LED remote, lists a 3,000-foot maximum range, and supports smartphone control through the DroneMobile ecosystem. The remote can provide visual and audible confirmation, so you have a better indication that the vehicle received the command and responded.
The kit listing includes a bypass module, and the system can use a vehicle-specific T-harness where one is available. On compatible vehicles and with the appropriate configuration, it may also support starting through the factory remote by pressing the lock button three times. Those are not universal behaviors. The exact result depends on the year, make, model, factory security system, key or push-button-start design, installed interface, and installer programming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor shoppers comparing listings, Compustar CSX4905-S is the model to investigate when two-way confirmation and app control matter. Verify the exact contents of the current package, the required vehicle-specific hardware, cellular service terms, and who will perform the installation before treating the online price as the total cost.
Best remote start plus alarm package: Compustar CS7900-AS
The Compustar CS7900-AS is the better fit when the goal is both climate preconditioning and an aftermarket security system. It combines remote start, keyless entry, security sensors, a siren, a temperature sensor, and a two-way LCD remote. Its published maximum range is 3,000 feet.
Compustar describes alerts for door, hood, trunk, and impact events. The package also includes a dual-stage shock sensor and a siren rated at more than 105 decibels. The two-way LCD remote can communicate status and alert information rather than leaving you to guess whether the command worked.
The additional security hardware makes this a more complex installation than the CS920-S. Customer comments on the manufacturer’s product page include both positive and negative experiences, including complaints about professional flashing and installation complexity. Those comments are not controlled reliability testing, but they do reinforce the practical warning: this is not an uncomplicated universal DIY product. Have the installer confirm the alarm inputs, hood-pin safety circuit, bypass requirements, and remote-start behavior for your vehicle.

Best for LCD status feedback and integrated security: Viper 5706V
The Viper 5706V is a two-way security and remote-start system with an LCD remote. It is a natural choice for buyers who prefer a dedicated status screen and want integrated security rather than a remote starter alone. Buying-guide coverage has highlighted its ability to provide vehicle-status and interior-temperature information through the two-way transmitter, while Viper identifies the model as a two-way security-plus-remote-start system.
Do not assume that every feature, range figure, or accessory is identical across every Viper installation. The applicable manual, RF package, vehicle interface, and installer configuration determine what the system can display and control. The 5706V should normally be treated as a retailer- or professional-installer product, not as a generic self-install kit.
When considering a Viper 5706V, ask for a written compatibility check and installation quote. Confirm whether the quoted system includes the required bypass or data interface, hood-pin switch, alarm sensors, siren, and any additional wiring needed by your car.
Best for professional, vehicle-specific integration: Fortin EVO-ONE
The Fortin EVO-ONE is aimed at installations where integration with the vehicle’s electronics matters more than finding the simplest box on a marketplace shelf. Fortin combines a remote starter, alarm system, immobilizer bypass, and data-interface module in one control unit.
Fortin documents support for high- and low-current ignition vehicles, OEM-remote operation, automatic and manual transmissions, temperature sensing, alarm functions, and quick-connect T-harness cabling. Certain EVO-ONE RF packages advertise up to 6,000 feet of range. That figure applies to the relevant package and remains a maximum-condition specification, not a guarantee for every installation.
Fortin explicitly requires the EVO-ONE to be sold, installed, and supported by a professional. That is appropriate because the system uses vehicle-specific coverage information and harness configurations. If you need a Fortin EVO-ONE installer, confirm that the shop supports your exact vehicle and transmission before purchasing the hardware.
How aftermarket remote starters work
An aftermarket remote starter is not simply a radio receiver connected to the starter wire. A typical installation may involve a control module, remote transmitter, vehicle-specific wiring or T-harness, immobilizer bypass or data interface, hood-pin safety wiring, brake and tachometer signals, door and trunk inputs, and programming for the vehicle’s security system.
Modern vehicles often use immobilizers, push-button start, multiplexed data networks, factory alarm systems, and electronic door-lock controls. The remote starter must communicate with those systems without defeating the safety conditions that prevent the engine from running when the hood is open, the brake is pressed, or the vehicle is not in an appropriate state.

Increase your remote start distance with a Start-X range extender kit (sold separately).
That is why the exact year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, key type, and factory features matter more than the product’s headline specifications. A system that works with one trim level may require different hardware or may not support the same functions on another.
What to compare before buying
1. One-way versus two-way remotes
A one-way remote sends a command but does not receive confirmation. The CS920-S uses two one-way remotes, so you may need to look at the vehicle to confirm that it started.
A two-way remote communicates back with the user. Depending on the system, it can show or signal that the vehicle started, that a door or hood was opened, or that an impact was detected. The CSX4905-S uses a two-way LED remote, while the CS7900-AS and Viper 5706V use two-way LCD remotes.
Two-way feedback is especially useful when the vehicle is parked beyond visual range. It does not eliminate compatibility problems, weak batteries, obstructions, or installation faults; it simply gives you more information about the system’s response.
2. Published range versus usable range
Do not choose solely by the largest number on the package. The CS920-S lists a 1,000-foot maximum, the CSX4905-S and CS7900-AS list 3,000-foot maximums, and certain Fortin EVO-ONE RF packages list up to 6,000 feet. These figures describe ideal or maximum conditions.
A concrete parking garage, metal building, dense urban area, hills, radio interference, and the position of the vehicle’s antenna can all reduce range. Ask the installer where the antenna will be mounted and whether the quoted range applies to the specific remote package being installed.
3. Smartphone control and cellular service
Smartphone control is not the same as long-range RF control. A remote uses its own radio connection and is limited by the transmitter, receiver, antenna, and surroundings. An app communicates through a telematics module and a cellular network, so it depends on cellular coverage, account setup, service availability, and the specific module.
Compustar identifies smartphone control through DroneMobile on connected systems such as the CSX4905-S. Viper describes SmartStart compatibility across its remote-start range. Do not assume that the app feature is included with every package, works in every country, or is free of ongoing service charges. Confirm current service pricing, activation requirements, coverage, and cancellation terms before buying.
4. Vehicle compatibility and bypass hardware
Compatibility is the most important buying criterion. The system may need a vehicle-specific bypass or data interface to operate the factory immobilizer, ignition, push-button start, door locks, tachometer signal, alarm, and other electronic functions.
A vehicle-specific remote-start T-harness can reduce wire cutting and simplify an appropriate installation, but it is not interchangeable across vehicles. The correct harness depends on the exact application. A bypass module may also be required, and not every product listing includes all of the hardware needed for every car.
The CSX4905-S kit listing includes a bypass module, but that does not mean every vehicle-specific part or installation accessory is covered. Compustar and Fortin both provide compatibility or coverage tools because the vehicle application determines the installation path. If you are buying a vehicle-specific remote-start T-harness or remote starter bypass module separately, match it to the exact year, make, model, trim, key type, and system configuration.
5. Automatic versus manual transmission
Remote starting a manual-transmission vehicle requires additional safety logic and correct installer configuration. The system must be able to determine that the vehicle was left in a safe state, generally through a neutral-safety or reservation-mode procedure, and it must prevent a remote start when the required conditions are not met.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Compustar markets a DAS-II-based solution for compatible manual-transmission applications. Fortin states that the EVO-ONE works with most automatic and manual-transmission vehicles. Neither statement means that any system is safe for every manual car. Confirm compatibility and have the installer demonstrate the neutral-safety procedure before using remote start.
6. Remote start versus security alarm
A remote starter preconditions the cabin by starting the engine. It does not automatically provide a full aftermarket alarm. The CS920-S is the basic remote-start choice in this guide. The CS7900-AS specifically adds security sensors, a siren, temperature sensing, and multiple alarm inputs. The Viper 5706V is a security-and-remote-start system, and the Fortin EVO-ONE includes alarm functions as part of its integrated design.
The CSX4905-S recommendation is based on two-way confirmation and connected control; do not assume that it includes the same alarm package as the CS7900-AS. Check the exact product configuration and quote if security is important.
7. Installation cost and support
Online hardware pricing is not the complete purchase price. Installation may require a vehicle-specific T-harness, immobilizer bypass, data interface, hood pin, alarm sensor, siren, antenna, additional wiring, programming, and troubleshooting time.

For most vehicles, budget for professional remote-start installation rather than treating the system as a universal plug-in accessory. Manufacturer guidance repeatedly directs buyers to authorized dealers or professional installers. Professional installation also gives you a place to return if the remote start, alarm, door locks, factory key fob, or app does not behave as expected.
When requesting a quote, ask for these items in writing:
- The exact starter and remote package being installed.
- Compatibility with the vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, and key system.
- Whether a bypass module, data interface, T-harness, hood pin, siren, temperature sensor, or alarm sensor is included.
- Whether factory-fob operation, smartphone control, trunk release, heated-seat control, or other features are actually supported.
- Any cellular activation or recurring service charges.
- The warranty on the hardware, installation, and programming.
- The procedure for returning to the shop if the vehicle fails to start remotely or the alarm produces false alerts.
Installation and troubleshooting expectations
A correctly configured system should start the vehicle only when the required safety conditions are satisfied, keep the engine running for the programmed duration, allow normal entry and driving, and shut down when a safety input requires it. The installer should show you how to use the remote, cancel a start, enter manual-transmission reservation mode if applicable, and identify an alarm or hood-open alert.
If the vehicle does not start remotely
First check the remote battery, vehicle battery, parking location, and whether the hood, brake, door, or alarm inputs indicate an unsafe condition. If the starter attempts to crank but the engine immediately stops, the bypass, tachometer, immobilizer, or vehicle-data configuration may need attention. Do not repeatedly attempt remote starts; contact the installer and describe exactly what the remote displays or sounds.
If the remote works only at short range
Test it outside the building and from several directions. If performance is still substantially below expectations, ask the installer to inspect the antenna placement, connections, remote battery, and RF package. The advertised maximum range is not a promise of performance through a parking structure or from inside a house.
If the smartphone app shows the vehicle as offline
Check the vehicle’s cellular coverage, telematics-module power, account activation, and current service status. App control depends on the cellular system and service configuration; it is separate from the RF remote’s range. If the vehicle recently had its battery disconnected or electrical work performed, the telematics module may need to reconnect or be reconfigured.
A practical buying process
- Write down the complete vehicle information. Include model year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, key or push-button-start type, factory alarm, and existing remote start.
- Run a vehicle-specific compatibility check. Use the manufacturer’s coverage tool or ask an authorized dealer or installer. Do not rely on a product title that says the kit fits a broad range of cars.
- Choose the type of feedback you need. Select the CS920-S for simple one-way operation, a two-way system such as the CSX4905-S for confirmation, or an LCD system such as the CS7900-AS or Viper 5706V for more detailed status information.
- Decide whether you need security. If you want a siren and impact, door, hood, or trunk alerts, choose a package that explicitly includes those functions rather than assuming every remote starter has them.
- Compare RF and app control separately. A 3,000-foot remote does not mean an app will work from anywhere, and an app does not guarantee reliable operation where cellular coverage is poor.
- Get an installed price. Ask whether the quote includes the bypass, T-harness, programming, hood pin, sensors, siren, antenna, and any required service plan.
- Confirm the handoff procedure. Have the installer demonstrate remote start, shutdown, lock and unlock, alarm alerts, factory-fob operation, app control, and manual-transmission safety procedures where applicable.
Who should buy each system?
- Choose the Compustar CS920-S if you want basic remote starting and keyless entry at the simplest feature level.
- Choose the Compustar CSX4905-S if you want two-way confirmation, a longer published RF range, and optional smartphone control, provided your vehicle supports the desired features.
- Choose the Compustar CS7900-AS if you want remote start combined with an alarm, siren, sensors, and two-way LCD alerts.
- Choose the Viper 5706V if you prefer a two-way LCD remote and integrated security feedback from a Viper installation.
- Choose the Fortin EVO-ONE if your priority is professional integration with vehicle-specific electronics, OEM-remote operation, immobilizer bypass, or a compatible manual-transmission application.
The best system is the one that is correctly matched to the vehicle and installed with the required safety and interface hardware. A cheaper incompatible kit is not a bargain, and a long-range remote cannot compensate for incorrect programming or poor antenna placement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far can a remote car starter work?
The systems in this 2022-oriented comparison list published maximum ranges from 1,000 feet for the Compustar CS920-S to 3,000 feet for the CSX4905-S and CS7900-AS. Certain Fortin EVO-ONE RF packages list up to 6,000 feet. Actual range varies with buildings, terrain, interference, antenna placement, and the specific installed package.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a remote starter be installed in a manual-transmission car?
Yes, but only when the particular system and vehicle are compatible and the installer configures the required neutral-safety or reservation-mode logic. Compustar and Fortin document solutions for some manual-transmission applications. Do not assume that any remote starter is safe for any manual car.
Can I install one of these remote starters myself?
Some experienced automotive-electronics technicians may be able to perform the work, but professional installation should be the default recommendation. The installation can involve immobilizer bypass programming, a vehicle-specific data interface or T-harness, hood-pin safety wiring, brake and tachometer signals, alarm inputs, and post-installation configuration.
Does every remote starter include a security alarm?
No. The CS920-S is positioned as a basic remote-start and keyless-entry system. The CS7900-AS, Viper 5706V, and Fortin EVO-ONE explicitly add security or alarm functions. The CSX4905-S recommendation focuses on two-way and connected control, so verify the exact package if you need a siren or impact sensors.
Can I use my factory key fob to start the car?
Some installations support that function, but it is vehicle-dependent. The CSX4905-S may support the factory fob’s three-times-lock feature on compatible vehicles, and Fortin documents OEM-remote operation for applicable EVO-ONE installations. Confirm the exact vehicle application before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs smartphone control free?
Do not assume it is. Smartphone control depends on a compatible telematics module, cellular coverage, account setup, and the provider’s current service terms. Verify activation requirements, coverage, and recurring charges for the exact package.
The Bottom Line
For the 2022 shopping context, the Compustar CS920-S is the straightforward budget pick, the Compustar CSX4905-S is the best balance of two-way and connected features, the CS7900-AS is the strongest security package, the Viper 5706V is the LCD-feedback alternative, and the Fortin EVO-ONE is the professional-integration choice. Before ordering any of them, verify the exact year, make, model, trim, transmission, compatibility hardware, current availability, and complete installed price.
