The best starter for a gas-powered RC car or truck is the one that matches its exact engine, backplate, one-way bearing and chassis access. “Gas powered” can mean a nitro glow engine or a spark-ignition gasoline engine, and a starter designed for one engine family is not automatically suitable for the other.
For many nitro models, the practical choices are a replacement pull starter, a handheld roto starter or a starter box. Manufacturer-specific systems, such as ROTOMotor’s RSS for new Roto engines, follow a different design and should not be treated as universal upgrades. Identify the engine make and model before buying any starter, then verify the required battery, shaft, hex and backplate.

What “gas-powered” means in RC
Remote-control cars and trucks use two combustion-engine categories that are often confused in listings:
- Nitro glow engines: Small engines using glow plugs and model fuel. The documented HPI starter systems in this guide are for specified Nitro Star engines.
- Gasoline engines: Larger spark-ignition engines using gasoline and an ignition system. Their starting hardware is not interchangeable with a nitro engine’s pull-start backplate or one-way bearing.
Before shopping, read the engine manufacturer’s name and exact model number from the crankcase, manual or vehicle documentation. Do not choose a starter solely because a retailer calls it “gas,” “roto” or “universal.”

Starter types and when each one fits

No source establishes a controlled test showing one approach is universally fastest, strongest or more reliable. Choose on fit, access and operating routine rather than an unsupported performance ranking.
Best documented handheld choice: HPI Roto Start 3
What part 160060 is for
HPI Racing lists the HPI Roto Start 3 System, part 160060, as an electric handheld starter for Nitro Star F/G-series engines that use a pull-start arrangement. HPI specifies a 7.2V rechargeable stick battery pack. The system is not a generic starter for every nitro or gasoline engine.
HPI’s fitment information calls for a 14mm one-way bearing. G3.0 engines identified by HPI as #15105 and #101310 use a 12mm one-way bearing; HPI says that bearing must be changed to HPI part #107829 before using the applicable Roto Start arrangement. Verify the engine number and bearing physically rather than assuming that every F/G-series engine has the same size.

The product information identifies the hand unit, a 225mm starter shaft and a 14mm-hex backplate as separate components. That matters when replacing a damaged part or converting an engine: the hand unit alone does not correct an incompatible backplate, shaft length or one-way bearing.

Use the manufacturer’s part page to confirm the current component list and fitment for your engine. Inventory and pricing change, so do not treat a historical listing as proof that a part is currently in stock.
Built-in overload protection
HPI describes a circuit breaker intended to protect the engine and says: “To protect your engine, the Roto Start 3 features a built in circuit breaker which cuts off in case of an overload (e.g. a flooded engine).” The breaker is a protection feature, not permission to use the starter on an incompatible engine or to keep holding the trigger when the engine is locked.
HPI Roto Start 2: a different model-specific option
HPI’s Roto Start 2 System, part 87130, is another handheld system for Nitro Star F-series pull-start engines. HPI directs buyers to its compatibility guide rather than presenting the unit as a universal replacement. The company also notes that a longer shaft may help reach the engine in the Trophy Truggy.

ROTOMotor RSS: an engine-specific integrated system
ROTOMotor describes its RSS ROTO STARTER as a lightweight system controlled from the RC transmitter with a PWM command. It is powered by two to four LiXX batteries. This is a distinct installation concept from a handheld nitro roto starter: the starting mechanism is associated with the engine and receiver control rather than being a universal tool pressed against any backplate.
ROTOMotor states that RSS can be fitted only to new Roto engines. Older versions use a different crankshaft and crankcase, so the older engine architecture cannot be assumed compatible. Confirm that the engine is a new Roto model approved for RSS before planning the conversion, and follow the maker’s wiring, battery and receiver requirements.
How to identify the right starter before you buy
- Record the engine family and number. Photograph the crankcase markings and compare them with the engine manual. Record whether it is a nitro glow engine or a gasoline spark-ignition engine.
- Inspect the current starting arrangement. Determine whether the engine has a pull-start backplate, a shaft-start backplate, an exposed flywheel for a starter box or a manufacturer-integrated system. A handheld roto starter normally replaces or engages a compatible backplate; it does not simply attach to every pull starter.
- Measure or verify the one-way bearing. Use the manufacturer’s specification or remove the relevant assembly to confirm the bearing size. HPI’s documented example distinguishes 14mm systems from the 12mm bearing used by the cited G3.0 engines.
- Check the backplate and hex. Confirm the required backplate shape, mounting pattern and drive-hex size. A 14mm-hex requirement is not interchangeable with a different hex merely because the shaft enters the same area.
- Check shaft length and chassis access. Look for braces, tanks, roll cages and body panels that block a straight approach. The HPI Roto Start 2 listing’s longer-shaft note for the Trophy Truggy illustrates how vehicle access can change the required component.
- List every power requirement. Include the starter battery, charger, connector and any receiver or wiring parts. For HPI part 160060, budget for a 7.2V rechargeable stick pack and a suitable charger; for ROTOMotor RSS, confirm the required two-to-four-cell LiXX setup.
- Check current documentation and part status. Manufacturer pages and manuals are the authority for revisions, discontinued parts and approved engines. Retail listings can omit a bearing, shaft or battery that the installation still requires.
Installation and first-start procedure for a compatible handheld roto system
Prepare the model
- Remove the body or access panels so the starter shaft can reach the backplate without bending.
- Secure the model on a stand and keep wheels, belts and the clutch area clear of loose clothing and wires.
- Inspect fuel lines, glow-plug condition and throttle linkage according to the engine manual. A starter cannot compensate for a fuel, glow or carburetor fault.
Install the correct backplate and bearing
- Confirm that the replacement backplate is approved for the exact engine model.
- Install the specified one-way bearing in the correct direction. Do not substitute a 12mm bearing for a 14mm specification, or vice versa, without the manufacturer’s approved conversion.
- Tighten the backplate evenly and check that the crankshaft turns freely by hand before applying power.
- Fit the shaft and verify that its hex fully engages the backplate without bottoming out or rubbing the chassis.
Connect power and start
- Charge the specified battery with the correct charger and voltage setting. For HPI part 160060, that means a 7.2V rechargeable stick pack.
- Insert the battery into the hand unit and keep the shaft disengaged while you confirm the starter switch returns to its off position.
- Prime and heat the engine only as directed by its manual. Avoid flooding it with excess fuel.
- Engage the shaft squarely and apply short starter bursts. Release the control as soon as the engine fires.
- If the engine stops abruptly, the shaft slips or the breaker trips, disconnect power and investigate instead of repeatedly resetting the unit.
Starter-box setup: when a handheld unit is the wrong format
A starter box is appropriate only when the chassis and engine expose a flywheel in the correct position. The roller must contact the flywheel through the chassis opening, and the box must support the vehicle without forcing the engine or drivetrain sideways.

- Confirm the flywheel diameter and location against the box’s adjustment range.
- Check that the chassis rails, battery tray and engine mount do not block roller contact.
- Use the box’s specified battery or power source and keep fingers away from the rotating roller.
- Do not buy a starter box as a drop-in replacement for a pull-start backplate; it is a separate starting arrangement.
Battery and charging requirements
The battery is part of the starter system, not an optional accessory. HPI specifies a 7.2V rechargeable stick battery for Roto Start 3 part 160060. The Roto Start 2 documentation and product materials should be checked for the battery and connector appropriate to part 87130. ROTOMotor’s RSS documentation specifies two to four LiXX batteries, which is a different voltage and installation requirement from the HPI handheld pack.

Use the chemistry, cell count, connector and charger specified by the maker. A pack that physically fits can still deliver the wrong voltage or polarity. Inspect packs for swelling, damaged leads or heat before use, and let a pack cool after charging or repeated starting attempts.
Overload, lock-up and flooding: what to do
HPI’s Roto Start 2 instruction manual tells users to stop if the engine locks and check for flooding or damage before resetting the circuit breaker. Follow the same conservative approach with any powered starter:
- Release the starter immediately when the engine locks, stalls hard or the shaft stops turning.
- Disconnect the battery before placing tools near the backplate, glow plug or flywheel.
- Check for hydraulic lock from excess fuel, a damaged glow plug, debris, a seized bearing or other mechanical resistance.
- Correct the cause and confirm free rotation by hand.
- Reset the breaker only after the engine and starter are confirmed compatible and clear.
Repeated breaker trips, a hot motor, a slipping one-way bearing or grinding noise indicates a fault that should be repaired before further starting attempts. Circuit protection limits some electrical damage; it does not make an incorrect shaft, hex or bearing safe.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Assuming every “roto start” fits every nitro engine
Symptom: The shaft does not reach, the hex does not engage or the starter slips. Fix: Match the exact starter part, backplate, bearing size and shaft length to the engine and chassis documentation.

Confusing a 12mm and 14mm one-way bearing
Symptom: The backplate will not seat correctly or the starter turns without cranking the engine. Fix: Verify the engine number and install only the bearing or conversion part specified by the manufacturer. HPI’s G3.0 examples require attention to this distinction.
Buying the hand unit without the battery
Symptom: The starter is assembled but will not operate at the track. Fix: Add the specified pack, connector and charger to the purchase list. HPI part 160060 requires a 7.2V rechargeable stick battery pack.
Ignoring chassis access
Symptom: The shaft hits a brace or cannot be held straight against the backplate. Fix: Measure the approach path with the body removed and check whether a longer or shorter approved shaft is available. HPI specifically notes a longer shaft may be useful on the Trophy Truggy with Roto Start 2.
Resetting a breaker without finding the cause
Symptom: The starter trips repeatedly or the engine remains locked. Fix: Stop, disconnect the battery, inspect for flooding or mechanical damage and verify compatibility before trying again.

Choose a pull starter when your engine already uses that arrangement and you want the simplest self-contained setup. Choose a handheld roto starter only after confirming the engine model, backplate, one-way bearing, hex, shaft reach and battery. Choose a starter box when the chassis exposes a compatible flywheel and you prefer a bench-style setup. Choose an integrated system such as ROTOMotor RSS only for the new engine family it was designed to support.
The safest purchase is therefore not the starter with the broadest-sounding name. It is the documented part that matches every interface on your specific engine and vehicle, with the correct power equipment included.
