Short answer: A ₹30-lakh budget buys a broad mix of petrol SUVs and other body styles in India, but the cap in the available market listings is ex-showroom, not on-road. The most useful starting shortlist includes the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, with Tata Sierra, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, MG Astor, Citroën Aircross and other body styles widening the choice. Your final pick depends on the exact fuel variant, engine, transmission, seating requirement and city-specific on-road price.
What ₹30 lakh actually covers
Every price quoted in this guide is an India-wide ex-showroom figure from manufacturer or automotive-listing pages. It excludes registration, road tax, insurance, handling charges and optional accessories. Those additions vary by state and city, so an ex-showroom price below ₹30 lakh does not guarantee an on-road total below ₹30 lakh.

Petrol powertrains: choose the type before the badge
Naturally aspirated petrol
A naturally aspirated engine uses atmospheric air rather than a turbocharger. Its throttle response is usually linear and its mechanical layout can be simpler, but acceleration depends more directly on engine speed and load. In this budget, check the exact petrol specification for models such as the Honda Elevate, MG Astor or other petrol-listed SUVs rather than assuming every trim uses the same engine.
Turbo-petrol
A turbocharger forces more air into the engine, allowing a smaller engine to produce stronger mid-range torque. The Taigun and Kushaq are specifically identified in Autocar’s comparison as turbo-petrol choices, and Volkswagen’s 14 April 2026 announcement introduced a new eight-speed automatic with its 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. Do not assume that every Taigun or Kushaq price in a listing refers to the same turbo engine or gearbox.
Strong hybrid
A strong hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and battery that can drive the car in some conditions. Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Victoris appear in the researched comparison’s strong-hybrid bands. Their ordinary petrol versions, where offered, are different purchases with different pricing, equipment and driving behaviour. Ask the dealer to write “strong hybrid” or “petrol” on the quotation.
Manual, torque-converter, CVT/IVT and DCT choices
Transmission names matter in traffic and on highways. Hyundai’s current model finder shows that Creta availability varies by trim across manual, automatic, IVT and DCT transmissions, alongside petrol and diesel choices. A DCT is not interchangeable with an IVT, and an automatic price cannot be used to judge the cost of the manual variant. Take the exact car you intend to buy on a route that includes stop-start traffic, a slope and an open road.
Leading petrol SUVs under the cap
Hyundai Creta: broadest configuration check
Hyundai’s model finder lists the Creta at ₹10.90–20.11 lakh ex-showroom, while its separate price page gives a starting price of ₹10,90,700. CarWale’s listing snapshot showed ₹10.91–20.46 lakh. The small differences between these pages are a reminder that prices change by page date, update cycle and variant listing.
Creta is offered with petrol and diesel choices and with manual, automatic, IVT and DCT options, so “Creta under ₹30 lakh” is not one specification. The Creta N Line is separately listed at ₹19.03–20.09 lakh as a petrol model with manual or DCT transmission. Compare the standard Creta and N Line by exact trim equipment and seating needs rather than treating the N Line price as the whole range.
Selected Creta special-edition trims may include a dashcam, according to Hyundai; this is not a feature of every variant. Put any included accessory on the signed equipment list.

CarWale showed the Seltos at ₹11.00–22.02 lakh ex-showroom in its petrol-car listing. The model line has multiple fuel and transmission possibilities, so confirm that the quoted Seltos is a petrol variant and identify its engine and gearbox. Use the upper end of the range only as a listing reference, not as a promise that every city has every trim in stock.
Volkswagen Taigun: turbo-petrol with a new automatic option
CarWale’s snapshot placed the Taigun at ₹11.00–19.30 lakh. Volkswagen announced a new Taigun on 14 April 2026 at ₹10,99,900 ex-showroom and said an eight-speed automatic is offered with the 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. Because the announcement is dated and promotional, confirm that the announced variant and transmission are available at your dealer.
Volkswagen also announced an assured-buyback offer at 75% of ex-showroom price for use up to three years and 30,000 km, with terms and a limited booking period. Treat it as conditional: verify that the programme is still active, read eligibility and deductions, and obtain the offer in writing before relying on it in your ownership calculation.
Skoda Kushaq: turbo-petrol alternative
The CarWale listing showed ₹10.69–18.99 lakh ex-showroom for the Kushaq. Autocar separately includes Kushaq turbo-petrol versions in its comparison. Check whether the quoted car is the base turbo-petrol or a higher turbo-petrol trim, then compare the transmission, safety equipment, wheel and tyre specification and delivery date on the quotation.

CarWale listed the Hyryder from ₹11.31 lakh ex-showroom. Autocar’s comparison separates its ordinary petrol and strong-hybrid price bands. Request both figures if you are considering the model, because a strong-hybrid Hyryder is not the same purchase as the entry petrol version. Confirm waiting time, battery-related warranty wording and the exact equipment of the selected trim with the Toyota outlet.
Other petrol models worth adding to the comparison
Autocar’s under-₹30-lakh comparison lists petrol ranges for Tata Sierra, Tata Curvv, Toyota Urban Cruiser Victoris, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, MG Astor and Citroën Aircross, in addition to Creta, Seltos and Hyryder. It also covers hatchbacks, MPVs and sedans in this price bracket. The cited price summary does not provide a single comparable ex-showroom range for each of these models, so obtain a current manufacturer or dealer quote rather than inferring a price from the model’s presence in the list.
This wider set matters if an SUV is not your default. A hatchback may suit a smaller footprint, an MPV may prioritise family seating and access, and a sedan may better match your boot or highway-use preference. Body style and seating should be decided alongside engine type; a cheaper SUV is not automatically a better family car than a sedan or MPV.

How to compare trims without exceeding ₹30 lakh
- Set the price basis. Write “₹30 lakh ex-showroom” or your actual on-road ceiling at the top of your shortlist. If the ceiling is on-road, ask each dealer to include registration, insurance, tax, handling and every mandatory charge.
- Filter for fuel first. Remove diesel, electric and hybrid variants if you want a conventional petrol car; keep strong hybrids in a separate column because their system is different.
- Record the engine and transmission. Note naturally aspirated petrol, turbo-petrol or strong hybrid, then manual, automatic, IVT/CVT or DCT. Do not compare a base manual price with a fully equipped automatic as if they were equivalent.
- Check seating and cargo needs. Count regular occupants, child-seat positions and luggage. Confirm whether the exact trim has the seating layout you need.
- Build a local quote. Ask for variant code, ex-showroom price, discounts, insurance, registration estimate, accessories and delivery timeline on one dated document.
- Test-drive the exact powertrain. A turbo-petrol automatic and a naturally aspirated manual can feel entirely different even when their badges are similar. Drive in traffic, reverse into a tight space and take the car on a faster road.
- Recheck on purchase day. Manufacturer pages and listing sites can update at different times. Confirm the price, standard equipment, colour availability and any offer immediately before booking.
Read the quotation line by line
Ask the salesperson to separate the ex-showroom amount from every additional line. Registration and road tax are location-dependent; insurance can vary with insurer, add-ons and deductible; handling or logistics fees should be explained rather than accepted as an unexplained bundle. Accessories are optional unless a particular item is legally or contractually required. If you are financing, request the cash on-road total separately from the financed amount, interest rate, tenure and processing charges so the ₹30-lakh comparison is not confused with the loan total.
Recommended Free Tools
Check that the quotation names the fuel system and transmission exactly. “Automatic” is not enough when a model has IVT, DCT or another automatic type. Ensure the colour, seating configuration, warranty description and promised delivery date are written down. If a discount depends on exchange, corporate eligibility or finance, ask what the price becomes when that condition is removed.
Test-drive requirements that prevent a wrong shortlist
Drive at least one naturally aspirated, one turbo-petrol and one strong-hybrid candidate if those categories are still open. Start with a cold engine if possible, spend time in slow traffic, perform a U-turn and park in a tight space, then join a faster road. Observe pedal response, visibility, seat adjustment, rear-seat access and luggage loading rather than relying on a short loop around the dealership. Families should bring the child seat or largest regular passenger; this is the quickest way to discover whether the claimed space works for your use.
For an automatic, check creep behaviour, low-speed smoothness, reverse engagement and hill starts. For a manual, assess clutch effort and gear reach in traffic. Repeat the drive in the exact variant you would book: a different engine, wheel size or transmission can change the experience substantially.
Price and eligibility traps
- Model-range confusion: A range such as ₹10.91–20.46 lakh for Creta covers multiple trims and may include fuel choices; it is not the price of one petrol automatic.
- Listing versus quotation: CarWale’s numbers are snapshots. A dealer’s dated quotation is the document that exposes city charges and stock status.
- Page-to-page variation: Hyundai’s Creta pages show slightly different starting and range figures. Cite the page date and recheck rather than declaring one number permanent.
- Offer conditions: Volkswagen’s 75% assured-buyback announcement has a time, distance, booking and terms framework. It is not a guaranteed resale value for every buyer.
- Accessory assumptions: A dashcam listed for selected Creta special editions should not be treated as standard across the Creta range.
- On-road overshoot: Insurance and registration can push an apparently compliant ex-showroom car over an on-road budget. Get the complete city quote before comparing finance payments.
- Availability mismatch: A listed variant may not be stocked in your city, may carry a waiting period or may have been superseded by a revised trim. Confirm the VIN allocation or written delivery commitment before cancelling another booking.
A practical decision framework
Choose the Creta or Seltos route when configuration breadth matters
Start with these two if you want to compare several petrol engines and transmission types within established mid-size SUV lines. Narrow the choice by the exact variant, not by the model name.

Choose Taigun or Kushaq when turbo-petrol is central to your brief
Both are identified as turbo-petrol options in Autocar’s comparison. Compare the base and higher turbo trims separately, and verify the automatic type and current availability at your city dealer.
Choose Hyryder, Grand Vitara or Victoris when a strong hybrid is the point
Keep strong-hybrid and ordinary-petrol quotes side by side. The systems, prices and ownership questions differ, so a petrol-only shortlist can give a misleading result.
Rank #4
Choose another body style when space or footprint is the priority
Autocar’s broader guide includes hatchbacks, MPVs and sedans under the same ceiling. If seven-seat access, a compact urban footprint or a sedan boot matters more than SUV styling, include those categories in your test-drive plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available evidence does not establish
The cited listings and manufacturer pages do not provide a like-for-like comparison of real-world mileage, long-term reliability, crash-test scores, service costs or independent driving impressions for every model. Those factors can change by engine, trim, tyre and location. Treat them as separate checks with current, model-specific evidence rather than assigning a blanket winner.
Final buying checklist
- Confirm the cap is ex-showroom or on-road.
- Write down the exact petrol, turbo-petrol or strong-hybrid variant.
- Match the gearbox to your traffic and highway use.
- Check seating, child-seat access and luggage space.
- Obtain a dated, city-specific on-road quotation.
- Test-drive the exact engine and transmission.
- Verify current price, stock, delivery date and offer terms before booking.
For most shoppers, the sensible process is to compare one broad-configuration SUV such as Creta or Seltos, one turbo-petrol option such as Taigun or Kushaq, and one strong-hybrid option such as Hyryder, Grand Vitara or Victoris, then add a sedan, hatchback or MPV if your space needs point that way. The best petrol car under ₹30 lakh is the exact variant that meets your body-style and powertrain priorities within a verified local on-road quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ₹30-lakh limit ex-showroom or on-road?
The listed comparisons use ex-showroom India prices. Registration, road tax, insurance, handling and accessories are extra, so obtain a city-specific on-road quotation before deciding whether a car fits your real budget.
Which petrol cars should I shortlist first?
Begin with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, then add Grand Vitara, Victoris, Elevate, Astor, Aircross, Sierra, Curvv or another body style according to your needs.
Are all versions of these models petrol?
No. Several model lines include diesel, conventional petrol, turbo-petrol and, for some models, strong-hybrid versions. Confirm the fuel, engine and variant code on the quotation.
What is the difference between a turbo-petrol and a naturally aspirated petrol car?
A turbocharger forces more air into the engine and can provide stronger mid-range torque. A naturally aspirated engine relies on atmospheric air and generally delivers a more linear response. Test-drive the exact versions rather than judging by the model badge.

Which automatic transmissions are available on the Creta?
Hyundai’s model finder shows manual, automatic, IVT and DCT availability depending on the selected Creta trim, alongside petrol and diesel choices. Ask for the exact gearbox name in writing.
Does the Hyryder price represent a strong hybrid?
Not necessarily. The Hyryder has separate ordinary-petrol and strong-hybrid price bands. Request both and confirm which system, trim and equipment the dealer is quoting.
Is Volkswagen’s 75% Taigun buyback guaranteed?
Volkswagen announced an assured-buyback offer at 75% of ex-showroom price for use up to three years and 30,000 km, subject to terms and a limited booking period. Verify current availability, deductions and eligibility in writing.
Does every Hyundai Creta include a dashcam?
No. Hyundai identifies a dashcam on selected special-edition trims. Confirm whether it is included in the exact variant and have the equipment recorded on the signed quotation.
Can I include a sedan, hatchback or MPV in this budget?
Yes. The broader under-₹30-lakh comparison covers those body styles as well as SUVs. Include them when seating access, footprint or boot shape matters more than SUV styling.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat ₹30 lakh as an ex-showroom starting point, separate conventional petrol, turbo-petrol and strong-hybrid variants, and compare exact trims. A dated local on-road quote and a test drive of the precise engine and gearbox matter more than a model-range headline.
