For a defensible shortlist, start with the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Alto K10, Celerio and WagonR, then check individually priced variants of the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. The figures below are starting or variant-specific ex-showroom prices, not guaranteed drive-away totals. Registration, insurance, taxes and dealer charges can push an ₹8 lakh ex-showroom purchase above an ₹8 lakh on-road budget, so obtain a written quote for your city before booking.
What “under ₹8 lakh” means in this comparison
Indian car prices are commonly advertised ex-showroom. That is the price of the vehicle before state registration, road tax, insurance, handling or other local charges. An ₹8 lakh ex-showroom ceiling therefore produces a broader shortlist than an ₹8 lakh on-road ceiling.

This article uses ex-showroom pricing for a national model-and-variant comparison because that is the only consistent basis in the available manufacturer information. Hyundai notes that the payable amount varies by variant, insurance, registration and local taxes. A dealer’s on-road quotation is the figure to use when your budget is a hard maximum.
- Ex-showroom budget: use the published vehicle price to identify eligible variants, then add local costs.
- On-road budget: reserve headroom below ₹8 lakh ex-showroom; the exact headroom depends on your state, city, insurance choice and dealer quote.
- Price date: the cited manufacturer pages were accessed in 2026, and prices, offers and variant line-ups can change.
A base price does not make every trim of that model affordable. The relevant question is always: which exact variant, with which fuel and transmission, is still below the ceiling?

Verified starting shortlist
The table separates published starting prices from a model’s complete range. Where the evidence does not identify an exact eligible trim, treat the model as a lead for a fresh dealer or manufacturer check rather than as a confirmed recommendation.
| Model | Published price evidence | Fuel and transmission evidence | What fits the ₹8 lakh comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki S-Presso | Starting ex-showroom price ₹3,49,900 (Maruti Suzuki India official listing, accessed 2026) | Exact qualifying fuel/transmission combination is not stated in the cited price evidence; verify the selected variant. | The starting version is below the ex-showroom ceiling. Do not assume every trim remains below it. |
| Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 | Petrol manual and AGS variants from ₹3,69,900 to ₹5,44,900 ex-showroom (Maruti Suzuki India official page, accessed 2026) | Petrol manual and AGS are explicitly identified. | The cited petrol variant range is below ₹8 lakh ex-showroom; confirm current stock, variant name and local on-road total. |
| Maruti Suzuki Celerio | Starting ex-showroom price ₹4,69,900 (Maruti Suzuki India official listing, accessed 2026) | Do not label a CNG version as petrol-only. The cited comparison material distinguishes petrol and petrol-CNG versions; verify the exact fuel and gearbox. | The entry version is below the ceiling. Higher trims and fuel choices require an individual price check. |
| Maruti Suzuki WagonR | Starting ex-showroom price ₹4,98,900 (Maruti Suzuki India official listing, accessed 2026) | Petrol and petrol-CNG versions are treated separately in the cited listing; verify the exact variant and transmission. | The entry version is below the ceiling. A starting price is not proof that the entire range qualifies. |
| Hyundai Grand i10 Nios | Starting ex-showroom price ₹5,59,700 (Hyundai Motor India page, October 2026) | Petrol manual and AMT variants are identified; higher trims may cross the ceiling. | Include only a currently priced variant that remains below ₹8 lakh ex-showroom. |
| Renault Kwid | ₹4.82–6.43 lakh on-road in Delhi (Autocar India page accessed 2026) | The figure is a Delhi on-road range, not a national ex-showroom price; confirm fuel and variant locally. | Useful as a city-specific lead, but it cannot establish nationwide eligibility on the same basis as the manufacturer figures above. |
How each confirmed model should be evaluated
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso: lowest published entry point
The S-Presso has the lowest starting ex-showroom figure in the supported shortlist. That makes it a logical first quote for a buyer prioritising the smallest initial vehicle price. The figure is a starting price, however, not a promise that every S-Presso version fits the cap.
Ask the dealer to write down the complete variant name, fuel type, gearbox, ex-showroom price, insurance premium, registration amount and every dealer fee. If you need an automatic, do not infer its availability or price from the entry listing; have the exact automatic variant quoted.

The official Alto K10 evidence identifies both petrol manual and AGS variants and gives a complete cited range that remains below the ex-showroom ceiling. It is therefore the most straightforward model in this set for comparing a conventional manual with an automated manual while staying within the stated national price boundary.
AGS is an automated manual transmission, not the same operating experience as a conventional automatic. Take a drive in the exact transmission you intend to buy and ask whether the quoted car is the current model-year version. The on-road amount still needs a city-specific calculation.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio: check petrol and CNG separately
The Celerio’s published entry price qualifies as a starting point for the comparison. The available listing distinguishes petrol from petrol-CNG versions, so the fuel choice must appear explicitly on your shortlist. A CNG variant should not be counted as a petrol-only car simply because the model also has a petrol version.
Request separate quotations if you are considering both fuels. They are different variants with different equipment, running requirements and purchase totals. Use the ex-showroom figure for the first screen, then compare the complete on-road quotes.
Rank #2
Maruti Suzuki WagonR: do not merge fuel variants
The WagonR also qualifies on its published starting price. As with the Celerio, the cited material treats petrol and petrol-CNG versions separately. Record the fuel system and transmission beside the model name in your notes; otherwise a comparison table can accidentally combine unlike cars.
Because only the starting figure is established here, ask for the exact trim that contains the features you need and verify that its current ex-showroom price remains below the limit. The dealer should also confirm whether the quoted amount includes any temporary offer or is the regular listed price.
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: include only a verified eligible trim
The Grand i10 Nios has a published starting price below the ceiling and is identified with petrol manual and AMT choices. The evidence also warns that higher trims may cross ₹8 lakh ex-showroom. It belongs on a careful shortlist, not an automatic “all variants under ₹8 lakh” list.
Specify the exact manual or AMT trim before comparing it with the smaller cars. Ask Hyundai or an authorised dealer for the current price sheet, then remove the variant if its ex-showroom price exceeds the cap. A low starting price cannot be used to qualify a more expensive trim.
Renault Kwid: a Delhi on-road reference, not a national price
The cited Kwid range is an on-road Delhi figure. It is useful if you live in Delhi and are comparing actual quoted totals, but it cannot be placed in the same column as national ex-showroom starting prices. State taxes, registration and insurance make the result different elsewhere.
If the Kwid interests you, obtain a local quotation that separates ex-showroom price, registration, insurance and dealer charges. Only then can you test it against either an ex-showroom or an on-road ₹8 lakh ceiling.
Comparison by the decision you are making
| Your priority | Evidence-led place to start | Verification still required |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest published entry price | S-Presso | Exact variant, fuel, transmission and city on-road total |
| Petrol manual versus automated manual with a cited variant range | Alto K10 | Current stock, model year and local charges |
| Small-car shortlist where petrol and CNG are both considered | Celerio or WagonR | Keep fuel variants in separate rows and price each one |
| Hatchback alternative with manual and AMT evidence | Grand i10 Nios | Choose a trim that is individually confirmed below the cap |
| Delhi buyer comparing on-road totals | Kwid as a local reference | Use Delhi figures only; obtain a current quote and do not generalise nationally |
This is a decision map, not a claim that one car is universally best. The available price evidence does not establish comparative safety, crash performance, real-world fuel economy, reliability, service reach, resale value, cabin space or ride quality. Those factors can change the right choice for a particular driver.

Step-by-step method to build your own under-₹8-lakh shortlist
- Set the budget basis. Write “₹8 lakh ex-showroom” or “₹8 lakh on-road” at the top of your worksheet. Never mix the two in one ranking.
- Choose the fuel rule. Decide whether you want petrol-only cars or whether petrol-CNG versions are acceptable. Put each fuel type on a separate row.
- Choose the transmission rule. If you require a manual, exclude automatic-only quotes. If you require an automatic, request the exact AMT or AGS variant rather than relying on a model-level label.
- Record the exact variant. Copy the manufacturer’s full variant name, not just the model name. Save the price-sheet date and mark whether the number is a starting price or a confirmed trim price.
- Get a city quote. Ask for an itemised pro-forma showing ex-showroom price, registration or road tax, insurance, FASTag or statutory items, accessories, handling and any other dealer charge. Remove optional accessories when testing a strict budget.
- Check the ceiling again. For an ex-showroom comparison, the variant must be below ₹8 lakh before local charges. For an on-road budget, the complete quoted total must be below ₹8 lakh.
- Confirm availability. Prices can change and a listed variant may not be available in your city. Ask whether the quotation applies to a current, billable vehicle and how long the quote is valid.
- Compare like with like. Place the same fuel and transmission type in adjacent rows. Do not compare a petrol manual’s entry price with a CNG automatic’s on-road total and call the result a model ranking.
- Recheck before payment. Have the dealer reconfirm price, taxes, insurance, delivery charges and any offer on the booking form. A verbal starting price is not a final transaction price.
How much headroom should an ₹8 lakh buyer leave?
There is no single national on-road add-on that can be applied accurately to every buyer. Registration and road tax vary by state, while insurance depends on the vehicle, policy and selected cover. Dealer charges and optional items vary as well.

Use a two-stage worksheet:
- Stage one: filter variants using the manufacturer’s ex-showroom figure.
- Stage two: replace that figure with the dealer’s city-specific on-road total.
If the second-stage quote is too high, move down to a less expensive trim or reconsider optional equipment. Do not describe the car as “under ₹8 lakh on-road” merely because its ex-showroom price passed the first filter.

Treating a headline list as a price guarantee
Broad discovery pages can contain stale or incorrect entries. One cited page placed a Volkswagen Taigun under an “under ₹8 lakh” heading while displaying a price of ₹11 lakh, and it named “Tata Aeris,” which was not independently confirmed in the available official evidence. Such entries should be removed until a manufacturer or current dealer price verifies them.
Assuming the whole model range fits
A starting price qualifies only the entry version unless a complete range is published. The Grand i10 Nios is the clearest example: the starting figure is below the cap, while higher trims may not be. Apply the same discipline to every other model.
Mixing ex-showroom and on-road numbers
An ex-showroom Maruti figure and a Delhi on-road Kwid figure answer different questions. Label every number with its basis and geography before sorting a table.

Celerio and WagonR listings distinguish petrol-CNG versions. Fuel type belongs in the variant description, not in a footnote. A petrol-CNG vehicle should not be presented as equivalent to a petrol-only trim.
Using an old offer as a permanent price
Manufacturer prices, offers and local totals are volatile. Ask whether a discount is a limited promotion, whether eligibility conditions apply and when the quoted amount expires. Publish and purchase decisions should rely on a current price sheet.

Which car should different buyers investigate first?
If your priority is the smallest entry price
Begin with the S-Presso, then compare the Alto K10 and the other Maruti starting points using the same city quote format. The lowest entry number is not enough if the required transmission or fuel is offered only in a costlier trim.
If you want a documented automatic choice
Start with the Alto K10’s AGS variants and the Grand i10 Nios AMT variants, because those transmission types are explicitly identified in the cited evidence. Confirm the exact eligible trim and drive it before booking.
If you are deciding between petrol and CNG
Keep Celerio and WagonR petrol and petrol-CNG versions in separate comparisons. Ask about the complete on-road total for each fuel choice rather than transferring the petrol starting price to the CNG quote.
If ₹8 lakh is an on-road hard stop
Do not select from the published starting-price table alone. Request local quotes first, then shortlist only cars whose complete totals remain below your limit after registration, insurance and mandatory charges.
If you live in Delhi and want an on-road reference
The cited Kwid range can be used as a Delhi-specific comparison point, but confirm that the quoted trim, fuel and date match your purchase. Buyers elsewhere need their own state and city quotation.
What the available price evidence does not tell you
Price pages alone cannot establish which car has the safest structure, the best crash-test result, the lowest real-world consumption, the strongest resale value, the widest cabin, the most comfortable ride or the most reliable service experience. They also do not establish waiting periods, maintenance costs or equipment parity between trims.

Verify those items from current manufacturer documentation, an inspection or test drive, and a written dealer quote. Keep the price comparison honest by retaining the same fuel, transmission and price basis for every candidate.
A practical dealer-quote checklist
- Exact model and variant name
- Fuel type: petrol or petrol-CNG
- Transmission: manual, AMT or AGS as applicable
- Current ex-showroom price and price-sheet date
- Registration or road-tax amount for your state
- Insurance provider, policy type and premium
- Mandatory statutory items and FASTag charges
- Dealer fees, accessories and whether each item is optional
- Offer conditions, validity date and eligibility requirements
- Expected delivery date and vehicle model year
- Total on-road amount and booking-cancellation terms
Keep the quote alongside the manufacturer listing. If the dealer’s model name, fuel, transmission or price differs, ask for the reason in writing before comparing it with another car.
Bottom line for an India-wide shortlist
Use the S-Presso, Alto K10, Celerio and WagonR as the supported starting set, with the Grand i10 Nios added only at a specifically verified eligible trim. The Alto K10 has the clearest cited petrol manual and AGS range; the other Maruti models are confirmed here by starting prices and therefore need trim-level checks. Treat the Kwid figure as Delhi on-road context, not a national ex-showroom benchmark. Most importantly, decide whether your ₹8 lakh limit is ex-showroom or on-road, keep petrol and petrol-CNG variants separate, and confirm the final amount with a local dealer before booking.
