For U.S. shoppers, the main choices are the Ford F-350 Super Duty, Ram 3500, Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, and GMC Sierra 3500HD. The right truck is the one whose exact configuration meets your payload and towing needs at a price you can compare fairly—not simply the one with the biggest advertised maximum.
What counts as a one-ton truck?
“One-ton” is a market-class label, not a promise that any particular pickup can carry 2,000 pounds or tow a specific trailer. Actual ratings vary with the truck’s cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, axle, options, rear-wheel arrangement, and hitch type. The four model families to compare for the 2026 U.S. market are the Ford F-350 Super Duty, Ram 3500, Silverado 3500HD, and Sierra 3500HD.
How much can a 3500 tow?
Manufacturer maximums can help identify candidates, but they do not describe every truck in a model family. GMC lists up to 36,000 pounds of maximum available towing and up to 7,290 pounds of maximum available payload for the 2026 Sierra 3500 HD when properly equipped. Those are separate maxima; they should not be read as ratings available together on one truck. Chevrolet lists up to 36,000 pounds of maximum available towing for the 2026 Silverado 3500 HD. The figures depend on configuration and equipment.
Ford says towing capability varies by trim, options, and payload, and directs buyers to its latest 2026 RV & Trailer Tow Guide for the final configuration. Ram publishes a 2026 Heavy Duty payload and towing chart; the available material confirms the chart and lists the 6.4L HEMI V8 at 405 hp and 429 lb-ft, but does not establish a Ram maximum towing or payload figure here. Check the chart for the exact truck rather than relying on an unverified headline number.

Which one-ton truck has the payload you need?
Start with the trailer you will actually tow, not its advertised maximum. Estimate its loaded weight and the load it places on the truck: tongue weight for a conventional trailer or pin weight for a fifth wheel or gooseneck. Then account for passengers, cargo, and installed options. These loads use truck payload, so a tow rating by itself cannot establish that a particular truck is suitable.
Before choosing a build, confirm its payload label and the applicable manufacturer ratings for the exact configuration. Compare the correct tow rating and hitch type, along with GCWR and any other limits that apply to the truck and trailer. Ford specifically advises checking payload against trailer tongue or king-pin load plus passengers and cargo, and consulting the applicable towing guide.
What should you check before towing a fifth wheel?
A fifth wheel or gooseneck loads the truck through the bed, while a conventional trailer connects through a different hitch arrangement. The hitch, truck, trailer, and load must be compatible, and the applicable ratings differ by configuration and hitch type. Confirm the trailer’s expected loaded weight and pin load, then check that the truck’s payload and the relevant towing limits accommodate them after passengers, cargo, and options are included. Do not assume a truck’s advertised conventional-tow maximum applies to a fifth wheel, or vice versa.

How to compare the four trucks fairly
Match configurations before comparing ratings
Line up the cab, bed, 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain, engine, axle ratio, and single or dual rear wheels as closely as possible. A maximum advertised for one build is not a fair comparison with a rating for a different build. If a dealer quote or listing does not specify the configuration behind a claimed rating, ask for the exact vehicle details and the applicable manufacturer chart.
Choose gas or diesel for the job
Compare the engine specifications and ratings available on the builds you are considering, then decide whether they suit your trailer and workload. Chevrolet lists its available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 for the 2026 Silverado HD at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft. Ram lists 405 hp and 429 lb-ft for the 2026 6.4L HEMI V8. These are specifications for particular available engines, not a like-for-like comparison of all four trucks. The information here does not establish which powertrain costs less to own, so do not treat diesel as the automatic value choice.

Compare similarly equipped prices
GMC lists a $48,200 starting MSRP for the 2026 Sierra 3500 HD; Chevrolet lists $49,395 for the 2026 Silverado 3500 HD. These are published starting prices, not transaction prices or a comparison of similarly equipped trucks. Build comparable configurations and obtain current dealer quotes before judging price. The available evidence does not establish a cross-brand value champion, long-term reliability ranking, or ownership-cost ranking.

- Write down the job. Record the trailer’s GVWR and expected loaded weight, expected tongue or pin weight, passenger count, and cargo.
- Set the practical build requirements. Choose the cab and bed you need, whether you require 4×4, and whether dual rear wheels fit your use and preferences.
- Shortlist exact configurations. Use each manufacturer’s current technical specifications and rating charts to find builds that meet your load requirements for the correct hitch type.
- Check the truck’s own payload information. Confirm the specific vehicle’s payload label and account for occupants, cargo, installed options, and trailer load.
- Compare equivalent quotes and drive the finalists. Ask dealers to quote similarly equipped trucks, then test-drive candidates that meet the requirements.
The best one-ton truck for your needs is therefore conditional: shortlist only builds that pass the ratings check, then choose among them based on your preferred configuration, equipment, driving experience, and comparable price. No single advertised maximum settles that decision.
