There is no universal “best” parking-brake return spring. A spring for a hand-lever mechanism is not necessarily the same part as a return spring in a rear parking-brake shoe assembly. Identify the spring’s location and confirm fitment for your exact vehicle before buying; the available service information supports inspection and repair guidance, not claims that an aftermarket spring improves vehicle performance.
First identify which parking-brake spring you need
“Parking brake return spring” can refer to springs in different parts of the system. A hand-lever assembly may use a spring associated with the lever’s return mechanism. A drum-style parking-brake shoe assembly may use return springs that pull the shoes back after application. Similar appearance does not establish that two springs serve the same location or fit the same vehicle.
Before shopping, determine whether the part belongs to the lever assembly or the shoe hardware. Use the vehicle’s service information and parts catalog for the exact year, make, model, and brake configuration. If the spring’s location is unclear, have a qualified technician identify it rather than ordering by appearance alone.
How service information describes spring inspection
2005 Buick Rendezvous: inspect the shoe-assembly springs
The 2005 Buick Rendezvous procedure calls for removing the brake drums and inspecting the upper return/adjuster actuator spring and lower return spring. It identifies excessive corrosion or stretching, broken hook ends, twisting, and binding as conditions of concern; affected springs and/or adjuster hardware require replacement. The procedure also calls for checking the lever and cable, so an application or release problem should not automatically be blamed on a spring. Read the Buick service procedure.

2005 Nissan X-Trail: check for a sagging return spring
The 2005 Nissan X-Trail service manual includes return springs in the parking-brake shoe assembly and says to check a return spring for sagging. Its removal and installation sequence is specific to that model; correct spring orientation and adjustment matter. Do not treat those steps as universal instructions for another vehicle. See the 2005 X-Trail manual pages.
What to look for when buying a replacement
Search for a vehicle-specific parking brake return spring, then verify the listing against the exact component and vehicle application. A spring or hardware kit is only a suitable choice if its fitment and contents match the repair needed.

- Exact fitment: Confirm year, make, model, and brake configuration; do not assume a broad “universal” label is sufficient.
- Spring location and design: Confirm whether the part is for the hand-lever mechanism or the shoe assembly, and whether it matches the specified position.
- Kit contents: Check whether the listing includes one spring or a set, and whether other hardware is included or required separately.
- Material and corrosion claims: Treat these as product claims to verify in the listing; the cited service information does not compare materials or brands.
- OEM or aftermarket source: Choose a part with documented fitment for the application. The available sources do not establish which source or brand performs best.
When the fault may involve more than a spring
A parking brake that does not apply or release correctly can involve more than a return spring. The Buick procedure specifically includes inspection of the lever and cable as well as the springs. For a lever assembly, a 2010 GEM service bulletin for a specific affected application—VINs 050597 through 050739—says the issue could render the parking-brake system inoperative and directs replacement of the lever for that application. It instructs: “Follow written procedure(s) in Model Year Specific Service Manual.” That bulletin is not a general diagnosis or repair instruction for other vehicles. Read the NHTSA-hosted GEM bulletin.

Spring orientation, access, assembly order, and adjustment vary by vehicle. The Buick and Nissan procedures illustrate different service details; neither is a universal step-by-step guide. Consult service information for the exact year, make, model, and brake configuration before disassembly or installation. If you cannot verify the part or safely complete the work, use a qualified repair professional.
