Complaint-based comparisons point to the 2009–2011 and 2019–2020 Nissan Titans as sensible years to investigate first. That is a cautious shortlist, not a proven reliability ranking: complaint databases use different records and methods, and none of the cited figures is a mileage-adjusted failure rate. For a used Titan, the specific truck’s maintenance, condition, mileage, configuration and history matter more than its model year alone.
Which Nissan Titan years look like the best bets?
Lemonbench’s comparison of NHTSA complaint records lists 2009–2011 and 2019–2020 among the Titan’s lower-complaint years. It also flags 2004–2005 for caution. Use those results to decide which trucks merit a closer look, not to assume that every Titan from a shortlisted year is dependable or that every truck from a flagged year is defective.
There is no validated, mileage-adjusted model-year failure-rate figure in the reviewed sources. Complaint totals do not account for how many trucks of each year are on the road, how far they have been driven, or how they were maintained and used.
Why do reliability rankings disagree?
Different sites compile and classify complaint data differently, so their rankings and totals are not directly interchangeable. CarComplaints.com labels 2018 the Titan’s worst model year in its comparison and identifies drivetrain complaints as the overall worst category. Lemonbench’s snapshot, by contrast, points to other years for its caution and shortlist. The disagreement is a reason to avoid treating any one ranking as definitive.

Lemonbench reports 4,168 owner complaints and 37 recall campaigns for 2004–2024 in a snapshot dated September 17, 2026. Those are Lemonbench’s counts; other aggregators publish different totals. RoadVitals says its records include owner-submitted complaints and cautions that the reports are unverified and do not establish that a defect exists. Complaint volume is a prompt for follow-up, not a failure rate or proof that a particular truck has a problem.
What reported problems should a buyer investigate?
Drivetrain
CarComplaints.com identifies drivetrain reports as the Titan’s overall worst complaint category in its comparison. During an independent inspection and test drive, ask the inspector to assess the drivetrain for condition and signs of trouble. A category-level complaint pattern does not establish a fault in an individual truck.

Rear axle
CarComplaints.com lists rear-axle failure reports for 2005. Treat that as a reason to check the axle and related components on an individual truck—not as evidence that every 2005 Titan has an axle defect.
How to evaluate a used Nissan Titan
- Review maintenance and vehicle history. Look for service documentation and consider how the truck’s mileage and use fit its condition.
- Match the truck to the job. Compare its configuration and intended workload with your needs; a model-year shortlist cannot tell you whether a particular truck is suitable.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the drivetrain and axle condition, along with the rest of the vehicle.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use Nissan’s recall lookup or the relevant official recall service, then confirm whether any applicable campaign remains open or has been completed. Do not assume a recall applies to every truck of a named model year.
Why a VIN-specific recall check matters
Nissan North America’s August 6, 2024 dealer bulletin for Campaign ID PD120 covers seven specific 2021 and 2024 Titan vehicles—not every Titan from those years. The bulletin describes a possible loose airbag-control-unit baseplate fastener that could leave the unit unsecured and delay or prevent airbag deployment. Nissan’s stated remedy is: “Dealers will replace the Airbag Control Unit.” Check campaign applicability and completion for the specific VIN before buying.
