For the 2022 U.S. market, the Innova 6100P was the best overall OBD-II scanner. It combined a standalone handheld display with optional Bluetooth access to Innova’s RepairSolutions2 app, live data, readiness testing, repair guidance, and selected ABS/SRS functions. Tom’s Guide named it its best OBD-II scanner in its August 2022 awards.
However, “best” depends on the job. A $30 code reader can be exactly right for a Check Engine light, while it may be useless for an airbag, ABS, transmission, hybrid, or electronic-parking-brake fault. This is a historical buying guide to the strongest products available and reviewed in 2022—not a claim that these are the best scanners to buy in 2026. Prices, availability, apps, vehicle coverage, and update policies may have changed.
Quick recommendations
Choose the scanner based on the vehicle system you need to access, not simply the number of advertised “OBD2 functions.” Generic OBD-II normally means engine and emissions diagnostics. ABS, SRS, transmission, TPMS, body modules, service resets, and active tests require enhanced coverage that varies by vehicle.
| 2022 recommendation | Best for | What stood out | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Innova 6100P | Best overall | Handheld screen, optional app, live data, readiness tests, repair guidance, selected ABS/SRS coverage | Now discontinued; Innova says existing units are limited to vehicles from 2022 or earlier |
| Topdon ArtiDiag500 | Deeper diagnostics under $200 | Touchscreen, live-data graphing, four-system coverage, service functions | Heavy and bulky; coverage is not universal across every module |
| BlueDriver Pro | Bluetooth and app users | Enhanced codes, freeze frame, Mode 6, repair reports, readiness checks | Requires a compatible phone; enhanced functions depend on exact vehicle and original sales market |
| Bosch OBD 1300 | Selected pre-1996 vehicles | Includes adapters for certain older GM, Ford, Chrysler, and Toyota vehicles | Not a universal OBD-I scanner |
| Foxwell NT614 Elite | Advanced DIY and professional-leaning handheld use | Live-data graphing, ABS, SRS, transmission, charging, and service functions | No touchscreen and no internal battery |
| Autel AutoLink AL539 | Scanning plus electrical testing | OBD-II diagnostics combined with battery, charging, voltage, continuity, resistance, and current tests | It is not a complete professional multimeter and full-system scan tablet |
| Topdon ArtiLink 500 | Inexpensive enhanced code reading | Manufacturer-specific codes, live data, graphing, definitions, and a color display | Less repair guidance than some app-based or higher-priced tools |
| Launch CR529 | Low-cost conventional handheld scanner | Live data, readiness testing, rugged design, and lifetime updates in the 2022 coverage | Primarily a generic OBD-II tool, not a universal ABS/SRS scanner |
| Ancel AD410, AD310, or MOTOPOWER MP69033 | Basic Check Engine diagnosis | Simple operation and low cost | Limited to basic functions and generic powertrain codes |
The prices below are approximate prices reported during the 2022 review period in the United States. They are historical reference points, not current prices.

The Innova 6100P was the strongest all-around choice for a typical DIY owner in 2022. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on review and its 2022 awards page both placed it at the top of the consumer OBD-II category.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Professional Accessories】Our OBD1 scanner connector is a male-to-female extension cable specifically designed to connect the scanner and vehicle, a utility tool specifically designed for GM vehicles, but this item is just a cable, not a scanner or diagnostic tool.
- 【Upgrade Material】The obd1 to obd2 adapter is made of high-quality metal and premium PVC material, which is durable and reliable in quality. Made of precision injection molding, it is not easy to break.
- 【High Quality】This OBD2 to OBD1 GM adapter combines flexibility and durability, the cable is easy to operate and use, multiple cables can be daisy chained together for longer distances, it manufactured to standard specifications, can be used for a long time use.
- 【Easy to Install】Our obd1 to obd2 adapter cable connector replacement is easy to use, plug and play, no driver required, just connect your vehicle with an OBD1 12-pin socket with your existing OBD2 16-pin tool , ideal for attaching the scanner to GM vehicles.
- 【Reduce Wear and Tear】Our 12-pin to OBD2 16-pin connector works perfectly with scanning software, with stable transmission without interference. Functioning as an extension cord can reduce the wear and tear on the OBD connector caused by frequent plugging and unplugging, and protect your car's OBDII connector.
Its main advantage was flexibility. You could use it as a conventional handheld scanner with a color display, or connect it by Bluetooth to Innova’s RepairSolutions2 app. That made it more practical than a phone-only dongle for roadside use, while still offering app-based explanations and repair information.
What the 6100P offered
- 2.8-inch color display.
- Handheld and Bluetooth operation.
- Live powertrain data.
- I/M readiness testing.
- Oil-light reset and charging-system testing.
- Repair explanations, parts suggestions, service bulletins, maintenance schedules, and predictive-failure information through the app.
- Approximately 7.2 × 3.4 × 1.1 inches and 6.5 ounces, according to 2022 coverage.
- One-year warranty and an approximately $140–$190 price range during the period reviewed.
It was a particularly good fit for owners who wanted more than a raw trouble-code number but did not want to operate a tablet-style professional scan tool. The physical scanner also meant that a dead phone battery or Bluetooth-pairing problem would not prevent a basic scan.
What it could not promise
The 6100P should not be described as having universal ABS, SRS, transmission, or service coverage. Innova’s own product information says feature support depends on the vehicle’s year, make, model, and engine. Check the exact application before buying, especially if your warning light is for an airbag, ABS, or another non-engine system.
Its interface was more text-oriented than modern touchscreen tools, and the physical buttons required deliberate pressure. The cable was also shorter than some shop-oriented scanners.
Important 2026 status update
Although the 6100P was the best overall recommendation for 2022, it is no longer a sensible default for a buyer diagnosing newer vehicles. Innova’s current product page says the 6100P has been discontinued, no longer receives updates, and is limited to diagnosing vehicles from 2022 or earlier. It remains relevant as a historical 2022 recommendation or for an owner of a compatible older vehicle, but do not confuse that with current coverage.
Best deeper-diagnostic tool under $200: Topdon ArtiDiag500
The Topdon ArtiDiag500 occupied the space between a basic code reader and a professional diagnostic tablet. In the 2022 comparison, it was listed at roughly $170 and offered a 5-inch touchscreen, Android-based software, Wi-Fi, a rechargeable battery, live-data graphing, readiness testing, and broader system access.
Its appeal was the ability to investigate more than the engine computer. TOPDON’s current official page identifies four principal systems:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Engine or PCM.
- Transmission or TCM.
- ABS.
- Airbag or SRS.
The current page also lists six service functions: oil reset, throttle adaptation, steering-angle-sensor reset, TPMS reset, battery-management-system reset, and electronic-parking-brake reset. It lists more than 67 vehicle brands and free software updates today, but those current claims should not be treated as an exact description of its 2022 software state. See the current ArtiDiag500 specifications before relying on any particular function.
Best use cases
- Diagnosing ABS, airbag, and transmission faults on supported vehicles.
- Viewing and graphing live data on a built-in screen.
- Performing common service resets at home.
- Working without depending on a separate phone.
Trade-offs
The ArtiDiag500 was heavy—approximately 1.6 pounds in the 2022 coverage—and its cable was relatively short. It was capable but bulkier than a simple reader or Bluetooth adapter. Also, “four-system coverage” does not mean access to every body, HVAC, gateway, or manufacturer-specific module on every vehicle. It is an advanced DIY tool, not automatically a professional programming or coding tablet.
Best Bluetooth scanner: BlueDriver Pro
The BlueDriver Pro was the best choice in this group for owners who preferred a phone-based diagnostic experience. The adapter works with the BlueDriver app, which can save reports and present more information than many inexpensive handheld readers.
Useful BlueDriver functions
- Confirmed, pending, and permanent Check Engine codes.
- Enhanced codes for supported makes and models.
- Freeze-frame data.
- Smog and readiness checks.
- Mode 6 onboard test results.
- Live data.
- VIN-based repair reports.
- Selected ABS, airbag, transmission, TPMS, 4WD/AWD, hybrid, and EV-related data where supported.
BlueDriver’s official compatibility checker is essential. Enhanced diagnostics vary by year, make, model, engine, region, and system. BlueDriver specifically asks for the vehicle’s original sales market—not merely the country where the vehicle was assembled. A claim that it works with “all OBD2 vehicles” generally refers to basic engine and emissions functions, not complete access to every control module.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Internet requirements
According to BlueDriver’s support documentation, basic diagnostics such as reading and clearing codes, freeze-frame data, smog checks, Mode 6, and live data can work without internet access. Repair reports, VIN decoding, recalls, service bulletins, sharing, and firmware downloads require a connection.
Why it suited used-car inspections
BlueDriver could show readiness status, pending codes, permanent codes, freeze-frame information, and—where supported—information about how recently codes may have been cleared. That can reveal a vehicle that has not completed its monitors after a recent battery disconnection or code reset. It is evidence, not proof of tampering: a legitimate repair or battery replacement can produce the same result.
The main disadvantages were the need for a compatible phone or tablet, app setup, changing operating-system requirements, and vehicle-specific limits on enhanced coverage. Check the app requirements before purchase.

- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. It can easily determine the cause of the check engine light coming on. After repairing the vehicle's problems, it can quickly read and clear diagnostic trouble codes of emission system, read live data & hard memory data, view freeze frame, I/M monitor readiness and collect vehicle information
- Sturdy and Compact: Equipped with a 2.5 foot cable made of very thick, flexible insulation. It is important to have a sturdy scanner as it can easily fall to the ground when working in a car. The AD310 OBD2 scanner is a well-constructed mechanic tool with a sleek design. It weighs 12 ounces and measures 8.9 x 6.9 x 1.4 inches. Thanks to its compact design and light weight, transporting the device is not a problem. The buttons are clearly labelled and the screen is large and displays results clearly
- Accurate Fast and Easy to Use: The AD310 scanner can help you or your mechanic understand if your car is in good condition, provides exceptionally accurate and fast results, reads and clears engine trouble emission codes in seconds after you fixed the problem. This device will let you know immediately and fix the problem right away without any car knowledge. No need for batteries or a charger, get power directly from the OBDII Data Link Connector in your vehicle
- OBDII Protocols and Car Compatibility: Many cheap scan tools do not really support all OBD2 protocols. AD310 scanner as it can support all OBDII protocols such as KWP2000, J1850 VPW, ISO9141, J1850 PWM and CAN. This device also has extensive vehicle compatibility with 1996 US-based, 2000 EU-based and Asian cars, light trucks, SUVs, as well as newer OBD2 and CAN vehicles both domestic and foreign. The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
Best for selected pre-1996 vehicles: Bosch OBD 1300
A standard OBD-II scanner is usually the wrong purchase for a pre-1996 vehicle. Older cars may use manufacturer-specific diagnostic connectors and protocols rather than the standardized 16-pin OBD-II connector.
The Bosch OBD 1300 stood out in the 2022 field because it included adapters for selected older GM, Ford, Chrysler, and Toyota applications. Bosch’s manual identifies the older-vehicle adapters and their intended applications.
2022 strengths
- Color display.
- Live data and graphing.
- Readiness testing where applicable.
- Oil-light reset and repair suggestions.
- Battery or cigarette-lighter power options.
- Selected OBD-I adapters.
The adapters do not make it a universal pre-1996 solution. Verify the exact make, model, year, connector, and protocol. It also became bulkier when the long extension cable was attached. Buyers of modern vehicles generally have no reason to choose it solely for its OBD-I capability.
Best professional-leaning handheld alternative: Foxwell NT614 Elite
The Foxwell NT614 Elite was a rugged, horizontal handheld scanner aimed at advanced DIY users. The 2022 coverage listed a 4.3-inch color screen, live-data graphing, programmable keys, MicroSD storage, oil-light reset, ABS, airbag, transmission, and charging-system functions.
It weighed approximately 1.1 pounds and included a one-year warranty. Its disadvantages were the lack of a touchscreen and the inability to operate from its own battery. It needed vehicle power, so it was less convenient than a rechargeable tablet-style tool.
“Professional-leaning” is the appropriate description. Do not assume that it has the same coverage, active tests, topology, coding, or programming capabilities as a dedicated professional scan platform. Confirm the exact vehicle functions before purchase.
Best scanner for electrical testing: Autel AutoLink AL539
The Autel AutoLink AL539 combined a conventional OBD-II scanner with built-in electrical-testing functions. It was a strong choice for an owner investigating a battery, alternator, fuse, voltage, or continuity problem as well as a Check Engine light.
Autel lists support for:
- All 10 standardized OBD-II test modes.
- Generic, manufacturer-specific, and pending codes.
- Live PCM data and freeze-frame data.
- O2-sensor test data.
- I/M readiness.
- Battery and charging-system checks.
- Voltage, continuity, resistance, and current tests.
- VIN, calibration ID, and calibration verification number retrieval.
- Internet updates and PC printing.
See the official AL539 product page and manual for the detailed functions. The built-in electrical tester is useful, but the AL539 should not be treated as a complete workshop multimeter and a full-system scan tablet simultaneously.
Best inexpensive enhanced reader: Topdon ArtiLink 500
The Topdon ArtiLink 500 was a useful step above the cheapest generic readers. The 2022 coverage described a 2.8-inch color display, manufacturer-specific codes, live data, graphing, readiness testing, code definitions, USB updates, a 54-inch cable, and a lighted OBD connector. Its historical price was approximately $59.
Its weakness was limited repair guidance compared with tools such as the Innova 5210 or BlueDriver. It was a sensible choice for someone who wanted a handheld screen and some enhanced-code capability without paying for a multi-system tablet. TOPDON also provides a model-selection guide.
Best low-cost conventional scanner: Launch CR529
The Launch CR529 was one of the better inexpensive handheld choices in the 2022 roundup. Reported features included a 2.8-inch color display, live data, I/M readiness testing, a 43-inch cable, an eight-button interface, a two-year warranty, and lifetime software updates. Its publication-period price was below $50.
Tom’s Guide found it rugged and capable for the money, although relatively bulky and occasionally slow to respond. It also offered less repair explanation than the Innova 5210. It is best understood as a generic OBD-II engine and emissions scanner. Do not buy it expecting universal ABS, SRS, transmission, service-reset, or bidirectional functionality.
Best basic code readers for ordinary Check Engine use
If your only requirement is reading a generic powertrain code and checking emissions readiness, an inexpensive reader may be the best value. The Ancel AD410, Ancel AD310, and MOTOPOWER MP69033 were among the budget recommendations in the 2022 coverage. TrueCar also highlighted the Ancel AD310 for user-friendliness, the MOTOPOWER for versatility, and the SCITOO AH3100 as a budget option.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Reading generic engine and emissions DTCs.
- Clearing a Check Engine light after recording the information.
- Viewing basic definitions and limited live data.
- Checking readiness monitors.
They are not the right tools for airbag, ABS, automatic-transmission, TPMS, hybrid-battery, electronic-parking-brake, steering-angle, diesel-DPF, bidirectional, ECU-coding, or programming work.
Other products appearing in the 2022 comparison included the Innova 5210, Ancel BD310, ThinkCar ThinkDiag, SeekOne SK860, ThinkOBD 100, Jethax, ThinkDriver, EDiag YA-101, and Foxwell NT301. They occupy different points between a basic code reader, a Bluetooth adapter, and an enhanced multi-system scanner. ThinkDiag in particular requires careful ownership-cost research because manufacturer profiles could involve annual fees or separate per-profile pricing.
What OBD-II actually covers
In the United States, federal OBD requirements apply broadly to light-duty vehicles beginning with the 1996 model year. EPA material identifies 1996 as the first model year in which full gasoline OBD-II compliance was generally required, while diesel implementation followed a different schedule. See the EPA’s OBD-II overview and its implementation-date documentation.

That does not mean every scanner can access every 1996-and-newer vehicle system. A low-cost reader may communicate with the engine computer for generic emissions codes while being unable to communicate with the ABS, SRS, body, HVAC, transmission, hybrid, or gateway modules.
Code reader versus enhanced scanner
Basic code reader
A basic reader commonly provides generic engine and emissions DTCs, code clearing, freeze-frame data, some live data, and readiness monitors. For a simple Check Engine light, that may be all you need.
Enhanced scanner
An enhanced tool may additionally access manufacturer-specific powertrain information, ABS, SRS, transmission, TPMS, 4WD/AWD, body-control modules, hybrid systems, and service functions. Some also offer active or bidirectional tests.
BlueDriver’s explanation of generic, enhanced, pending, confirmed, and permanent codes illustrates the distinction. The key buying question is not “Does it read OBD2?” but “Does it read the module and perform the function I need on my exact vehicle?”
OBD-II modes in plain English
Marketing claims about “all 10 modes” can sound more impressive than they are. The standardized functions are useful, but vehicle support and how clearly a scanner presents the data still matter.
| Mode | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Mode 01 | Current powertrain data and live parameter values. |
| Mode 02 | Freeze-frame data captured when a fault was stored. |
| Mode 03 | Confirmed or stored diagnostic trouble codes. |
| Mode 04 | Clears emissions data and resets related information. |
| Mode 06 | Onboard diagnostic test results, sometimes useful before a code becomes confirmed. |
| Mode 07 | Pending diagnostic trouble codes. |
| Mode 08 | Bidirectional or onboard component control, where supported. |
| Mode 09 | Vehicle information such as VIN and calibration data. |
| Mode 0A | Permanent diagnostic trouble codes. |
The OBD Clearinghouse’s SAE J1979 summary documents these standardized functions. Mode 08 deserves special caution: a scanner may support the mode in principle without supporting useful active tests on your particular vehicle.
Live data, freeze-frame, Mode 6, and readiness monitors
Live data
Live data consists of values reported by the vehicle while the ignition is on or the engine is running. Typical values include engine speed, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, fuel trims, throttle position, oxygen-sensor readings, intake-manifold pressure, system voltage, and calculated engine load.
A displayed sensor value does not prove that the sensor is defective. A bad reading may result from wiring, a poor ground, a vacuum leak, low voltage, software, a mechanical problem, or another upstream fault. Use the data to form and test a diagnosis rather than automatically replacing the named component.

Freeze-frame data
Freeze-frame data is a snapshot of operating conditions at the time the vehicle stored a trouble code. Save it before clearing anything. Engine speed, coolant temperature, load, vehicle speed, fuel trims, and sensor conditions can help distinguish a cold-start problem from a fault occurring under load or at highway speed.
Mode 6
Mode 6 exposes results from onboard self-tests. It can reveal marginal or failing monitor results before a Check Engine light remains continuously illuminated. It is most useful to an experienced DIYer because manufacturers may present test IDs and limits in vehicle-specific ways. Mode 6 is not a universal predictive-diagnosis feature.
Readiness monitors
Readiness monitors are emissions self-tests. A monitor may show:
- Ready: the test has completed.
- Not ready: the test has not completed.
- Not applicable or not supported: the vehicle does not use that monitor.
Monitors can become incomplete after the battery is disconnected, codes are cleared, repairs are performed, or the vehicle has not yet experienced the operating conditions required for the test. The EPA readiness guidance explains why a vehicle may need normal driving before its monitors return to ready.

Can a scanner guarantee a smog-test pass?
No. A scanner can report stored codes, MIL status, and OBD readiness, but it cannot guarantee a state or local inspection result. Rules differ by jurisdiction, including how many monitors may be incomplete. Some locations also use tailpipe or gas-sampling tests that a handheld scanner cannot perform. BlueDriver explains this distinction in its guidance on complete and incomplete smog results.

Before an inspection, check the rules for the state and vehicle. If you clear a code immediately before testing, you may reset the readiness monitors and make the car ineligible for inspection until it completes the required drive cycle.
Pending, confirmed, and permanent codes
- Pending code: the vehicle detected a condition but may not yet have met the criteria to turn on the warning light.
- Confirmed or stored code: the fault met the vehicle’s criteria and was stored in memory.
- Permanent code: a code retained for emissions verification. It normally cannot be erased with a scan tool or by disconnecting the battery.
A permanent DTC is cleared by the vehicle after the underlying problem is repaired and the required self-tests complete. See BlueDriver’s code-type explanation and the California Bureau of Automotive Repair’s permanent-DTC guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right scanner before buying
- Identify the vehicle: record the model year, make, model, engine, relevant transmission, and country or market where it was originally sold.
- Identify the warning light or task: Check Engine, ABS, SRS, transmission, battery, service reset, active test, coding, or programming.
- Check exact coverage: use the manufacturer’s year/make/model checker and confirm the specific module and function.
- Choose the interface: a handheld screen is simpler and independent of a phone; Bluetooth offers better graphs, reports, and app explanations.
- Calculate ownership cost: include subscriptions, per-make fees, update fees, phone requirements, warranty, and whether basic functions remain available after a subscription ends.
- Check special vehicle needs: hybrid, EV, diesel, European-market, motorcycle, commercial, and pre-1996 vehicles may need separate coverage or adapters.
For example, a BlueDriver compatibility search requires more than the country where a vehicle was manufactured. Likewise, “free lifetime updates” may refer only to a particular kind of firmware or vehicle-coverage update. Read the terms rather than assuming all future features are included.
Recommended Free Tools
Handheld versus Bluetooth
| Handheld scanner | Bluetooth/app scanner |
|---|---|
| No phone or pairing required | Uses a compatible phone or tablet |
| Convenient roadside operation | Better graphs, dashboards, storage, and sharing |
| Usually physical buttons and a dedicated screen | More readable repair reports and explanations |
| Less dependent on app and operating-system support | May require account setup and internet for reports or updates |
| Often easier to keep in a toolbox | Phone battery and software support become part of the diagnostic system |
Service resets, active tests, and programming are different
A service reset may reset an oil reminder or place an electronic parking brake into a service mode. An active or bidirectional test commands a component—such as a fan, relay, pump, or actuator—to operate. Coding and programming change control-module configuration or software and carry substantially greater risk.
A scanner advertising six service resets is not necessarily capable of bidirectional testing, ECU coding, or programming. Verify each function for the exact vehicle rather than relying on labels such as “full system” or “professional.”
How to perform a basic scan correctly
- Park safely, set the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
- Locate the diagnostic-link connector, usually below the dashboard near the driver’s knees.
- Plug the scanner in securely.
- Turn the ignition to key-on, engine-off, unless the scanner’s instructions specify a different procedure.
- Allow the tool to identify the vehicle and run a complete available scan.
- Save or photograph confirmed, pending, and permanent codes; freeze-frame data; readiness status; and MIL status.
- Research the exact code in vehicle-specific service information.
- Test likely causes, including power, grounds, wiring, connectors, vacuum, mechanical condition, and live-data behavior.
- Clear codes only after documenting them and only when appropriate.
- Re-scan after the repair.
- Drive under the conditions required by the vehicle’s monitors, then check readiness again.
The correct workflow is scan → save codes and freeze frame → diagnose → repair → clear if appropriate → complete the drive cycle → recheck. Clearing a code is not a repair and can remove useful evidence.
If the scanner will not communicate
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm that the ignition is on.
- Push the connector fully into the vehicle’s diagnostic port.
- Inspect the port for bent, recessed, corroded, or damaged pins.
- Check that the vehicle battery has adequate voltage.
- Confirm that the vehicle uses a protocol and market supported by the scanner.
- Make sure you are not attempting to access a module the scanner does not cover.
- Check whether an aftermarket stereo or accessory has disturbed the diagnostic circuit.
- Update the scanner firmware or app if an update is available.
- Turn the ignition off for approximately 10 seconds, then retry.
- Consult vehicle service information or a qualified technician if communication still fails.
Autel’s troubleshooting material recommends checking ignition status, connector security, OBD-II compliance, connector pins, and battery voltage. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair’s OBD reference also identifies damaged wiring or connectors, aftermarket stereos, communication with the wrong module, and invalid vehicle data as possible causes.
Special cases most buying guides overlook
Pre-1996 vehicles
Do not assume a standard OBD-II scanner will work. Manufacturer-specific connectors and protocols are common. The Bosch OBD 1300 is notable for selected adapters, but exact compatibility remains necessary.
European-market vehicles
Do not apply the U.S. 1996 rule to every vehicle sold worldwide. OBD, EOBD, and regional implementation dates differ. Use the original sales market when checking compatibility.
Diesel vehicles
Diesel OBD requirements and supported monitors can differ from gasoline vehicles. Confirm diesel coverage separately.
Hybrid and electric vehicles
A tool may read generic powertrain information while lacking access to the traction battery, inverter, onboard charger, or high-voltage system. Verify the exact vehicle and system.

A car scanner may not fit or communicate with a motorcycle without a brand-specific adapter and supported protocol. Treat motorcycles as a separate diagnostic category.
Flashing Check Engine light
A flashing Check Engine light commonly indicates a severe active fault such as a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Reduce driving and seek professional help rather than relying on a scanner to make continued driving safe.
“No codes” does not mean “no problem”
A scanner may report no codes because the fault is intermittent, still pending, outside the tool’s module coverage, not yet detected by a monitor, or mechanical rather than electronically monitored. It may also have failed to identify the vehicle correctly.
Best Value
- NOTE: This device requires a compatible third-party app to operate and is primarily designed for standard OBD-II diagnostics (excluding ABS/SRS, oil light or service reset, etc.). Please check the product description for compatible apps and supported functions.
- GENERIC OBD-II FUNCTIONS – read & clear trouble codes for check engine light, view freeze frame data, I/M readiness, and live sensor data to help monitor vehicle health and diagnose check engine problems. (Make sure to download the correct App and avoid imitation apps that may require subscription)
- VEHICLE COMPATIBILITY – Works with most 1996+ cars and light trucks in the US for generic OBD-II functions. Support for EVs & hybrids is app-dependent; please check compatibility in Car Scanner App or contact Veepeak.
- EASY BLUETOOTH CONNECTION: Supports Bluetooth LE for iOS & Android (not WiFi): please connect from within the app after setting the correct connection type. Do not pair in the phone’s Bluetooth menu (especially for iOS devices). Android head units may not be supported.
- APP COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with generic Apps including Car Scanner ELM OBD2, Torque (for Android), OBD Fusion, as well as vehicle-specific Apps like BimmerCode*, BimmerLink*, OBD JScan, Dr. Prius, etc. Note: some Apps or in-App features require separate purchase from third party developers. NOT compatible with Carly, MHD, xHP, ProTool, bootmod3, etc.
What these scanners cannot do
Even a relatively advanced consumer scanner does not automatically diagnose or repair a vehicle. It reads information and, on supported systems, may command limited tests or perform resets. It cannot replace electrical testing, mechanical inspection, wiring diagrams, service procedures, or a confirmed diagnosis.
Repair suggestions and reported fixes from Innova, BlueDriver, or other products are starting points—not proof that the suggested part is bad. Check power, ground, connectors, wiring, vacuum, mechanical condition, and related live data before replacing an expensive component.
Bottom-line buying advice
For the 2022 U.S. market, buy the Innova 6100P if you want the best blend of handheld usability, app assistance, live data, readiness checks, and broader DIY capability. Choose the Topdon ArtiDiag500 when ABS, SRS, transmission, and service functions matter more than compact size. Choose BlueDriver Pro for an app-first experience, saved reports, Mode 6, and supported enhanced diagnostics. Choose the Bosch OBD 1300 only when its selected OBD-I adapters match your older vehicle. For a basic Check Engine light, save money with the Launch CR529, Topdon ArtiLink 500, Ancel AD410/AD310, or MOTOPOWER MP69033.
Before buying any of them, verify the exact vehicle, original sales market, module, and function. The most expensive scanner is not necessarily the right one, and a code reader that cannot access the warning light you are investigating is no bargain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an OBD2 scanner work on my car?
Most U.S.-market gasoline cars and light trucks from model year 1996 onward support standardized OBD-II engine and emissions communication. That does not guarantee ABS, SRS, transmission, body, hybrid, service, or other enhanced coverage. Check the scanner against the vehicle’s exact year, make, model, engine, and original sales market.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can a basic OBD2 scanner read ABS or airbag codes?
Usually not. Basic readers generally access generic engine and emissions codes. ABS and airbag diagnostics require enhanced coverage, and even an enhanced scanner may support those systems only on specific vehicles.
Can clearing a code fix the problem?
No. Clearing removes stored emissions information and resets readiness monitors; it does not repair the underlying fault. Save the code and freeze-frame data first, diagnose and repair the cause, then clear the code if appropriate.
Can a scanner show whether a used car’s codes were recently cleared?
It can provide clues through readiness monitors, pending and permanent codes, MIL status, and supported distance or run-time information. Many incomplete monitors can indicate a recent battery disconnection or code reset, but they are not proof of tampering because legitimate repairs can produce the same result.
Does a scanner guarantee that a vehicle will pass a smog test?
No. It can report readiness and stored codes, but inspection rules vary by jurisdiction. Some inspections also use tailpipe or gas-sampling tests that a scanner cannot evaluate.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do Bluetooth scanners need Wi-Fi?
Not always. BlueDriver says basic code reading, clearing, freeze-frame, smog checks, Mode 6, and live data can work without internet. Repair reports, VIN decoding, recalls, service bulletins, sharing, and firmware downloads require an internet connection.
What is the difference between pending, confirmed, and permanent codes?
A pending code indicates a detected condition that may not yet have met the criteria for a warning light. A confirmed or stored code has met the vehicle’s criteria. A permanent code remains for emissions verification and normally clears only after the vehicle verifies that the fault has been repaired.
Do hybrids, diesels, motorcycles, and European cars need special scanner coverage?
Often, yes. Diesel requirements differ from gasoline requirements, hybrids and EVs may need traction-system coverage, motorcycles may require brand-specific connectors, and European-market vehicles follow regional implementation rules. Verify the exact application.
Are subscriptions required for OBD2 scanners?
Some tools charge annual or per-make fees for enhanced software, while others include updates or basic functions without a subscription. Confirm whether the fee covers firmware, vehicle coverage, repair reports, or service functions before buying.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs a $20 scanner good enough?
It can be sufficient for generic Check Engine codes, basic live data, and readiness checks. It is not sufficient when you need ABS, SRS, transmission, TPMS, hybrid, service-reset, active-test, coding, or programming functions.
The Bottom Line
The best OBD2 scanner is the one that supports the system you actually need to diagnose. In 2022, that made the Innova 6100P the strongest overall consumer choice, but a basic reader was better value for simple engine codes and a Topdon, BlueDriver, Foxwell, or compatible Autel tool was more appropriate for enhanced diagnostics. Treat the Innova recommendation as historical: it has since been discontinued and is limited to vehicles from 2022 or earlier.
