For a new petrol car in India, the most credible sub-₹5 lakh shortlist is the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and, with qualifications, the Renault Kwid. Those figures are primarily ex-showroom prices. Once registration, insurance, taxes and other charges are added, a strict ₹5 lakh on-road budget usually excludes several variants. Get a written, city-specific quote for the exact trim before deciding.
The Alto K10 offers the clearest range of variants below the ex-showroom ceiling, including one automated-manual option. The S-Presso covers the same entry-level use case with a claimed ARAI efficiency range of 24.12–25.30 km/l. The Kwid can work when the lowest purchase price is the priority, but its current local price must be confirmed because the widely quoted ₹4.29 lakh starting figure dates from September 2025.

First decide what “under ₹5 lakh” means
Car prices are normally advertised ex-showroom. That is the price of the vehicle before the costs required to put it on the road. Your invoice can also include registration or road tax, compulsory and optional insurance, handling or documentation items where permitted, fastag and other local charges. These vary by state, city, insurer, buyer profile and variant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction changes the shortlist. Autocar India’s 2026 roundup shows Delhi on-road examples of several cars that qualify below ₹5 lakh ex-showroom crossing the ceiling after charges. A buyer who means ₹5 lakh all-in should therefore start with the least expensive manual trim, ask for every charge in writing and be prepared to consider an inspected used hatchback or a higher budget. A new car brings a manufacturer warranty and no previous wear, but neither makes an ex-showroom quote an on-road price.

How to read the prices in this guide
- Ex-showroom: the published vehicle price used for the main model shortlist.
- On-road: the city- and variant-specific amount needed for registration and delivery; it must come from a current written quote.
- Historical introductory price: an older announcement that provides context, not a promise of what a dealer will charge today.
All live figures below are tied to their source and date. Prices can change without notice, so treat the tables as a buying screen rather than a final invoice.
Shortlist at a glance
| Model | What the evidence establishes | Best fit | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 petrol | ₹3,69,900–₹5,44,900 ex-showroom across listed petrol variants; five listed variants are below ₹5 lakh. | Lowest-cost new car with a broad manual choice and one AGS automatic below the ex-showroom cap. | On-road total depends on city and charges; top AGS variant exceeds the cap before those costs. |
| Maruti Suzuki S-Presso petrol | ₹3.50–5.27 lakh ex-showroom range reported by Autocar India; 1.0-litre petrol, 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT. | Buyers who value a tall seating position, compact dimensions and a claimed 24.12–25.30 km/l ARAI range. | Cheapest trims have limited equipment; confirm the exact variant’s specification. |
| Renault Kwid petrol | Autocar lists Evolution 1.0 manual and AMT versions below ₹5 lakh ex-showroom; only the manual remained below ₹5 lakh in its Delhi on-road comparison. | Price-sensitive shoppers willing to verify a current local quote. | Renault’s ₹4.29 lakh starting price was announced on 5 September 2025 for deliveries from 22 September 2025, so it is historical. |
Price basis and date: ex-showroom figures are from the cited manufacturer or Autocar India pages checked 13 October 2026, except the Kwid historical announcement dated 5 September 2025. No table value should be read as an on-road price.
Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: the most flexible sub-₹5 lakh range
Maruti Suzuki India’s official price page, checked 13 October 2026, lists six petrol Alto K10 variants from ₹3,69,900 to ₹5,44,900 ex-showroom. Five are below ₹5 lakh: four manuals and one AGS automated manual. The VXi+ AGS is the only listed petrol variant above the ceiling.

Which Alto K10 variant makes sense?
The Std (O) is the entry point if the absolute purchase price matters most. The LXi (O) keeps the manual gearbox while moving up the range. VXi (O) and VXi+ (O) MT leave more room to choose equipment, but the VXi+ manual is only ₹100 below the ex-showroom limit; even a small local charge makes the all-in budget impossible. The VXi (O) AGS is the relevant choice for someone who wants two-pedal driving without crossing ₹5 lakh ex-showroom. AGS is an automated manual transmission, not a conventional torque-converter or continuously variable automatic; take a test drive in traffic to judge its shift behavior.
Do not assume that a trim’s name guarantees a particular safety or convenience feature. Ask the dealer for the current brochure and the exact equipment list for the vehicle identification number being invoiced. Verify airbags, electronic assistance, seat-belt reminders, child-seat mounts, parking sensors and other items rather than extrapolating from a higher trim.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso: compact dimensions and claimed efficiency
Autocar India reports an ex-showroom petrol range of ₹3.50–5.27 lakh for the S-Presso, with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT, and claimed ARAI fuel efficiency of 24.12–25.30 km/l. It reports standard dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors, while noting that equipment is limited on the cheapest variants. These are reported specifications; confirm the current trim-level list with the brochure or dealer.
| Item | Reported S-Presso information |
|---|---|
| Ex-showroom range | ₹3.50–5.27 lakh (Autocar India model information checked 13 October 2026) |
| Engine | 1.0-litre petrol |
| Gearboxes | 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT |
| Claimed ARAI petrol efficiency | 24.12–25.30 km/l; certified/claimed figure, not a real-world guarantee |
| Reported standard safety equipment | Dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors; verify by variant |
The S-Presso is worth considering when a higher seating position and easy urban maneuverability matter more than a conventional hatchback silhouette. The lower-priced versions are the ones most likely to fit a tight budget, but they also carry the greatest risk of missing equipment you expected. Compare the written standard-equipment list, not photographs or a display car fitted with optional accessories.

Renault Kwid: a qualified price-led alternative
Autocar India’s 2026 roundup places the Kwid Evolution 1.0 manual and AMT below ₹5 lakh ex-showroom. In its Delhi on-road comparison, only the manual Evolution remained below ₹5 lakh. That makes the Kwid a candidate for an ex-showroom search, not a guaranteed all-in solution.
Renault India announced a ₹4.29 lakh starting price on 5 September 2025, effective for deliveries from 22 September 2025. This is a historical price, not a verified October 2026 retail price. Renault’s pricing information is displayed ex-showroom for selected city limits; local taxes can apply and prices may change. Ask a nearby dealer to print the current price, insurance, registration and any optional items separately.
When the Kwid belongs on your list
- You are comparing the lowest available entry price and are comfortable with a manual gearbox.
- You have checked that the exact city quote, not just the headline price, fits your ceiling.
- You have inspected the equipment and seating needs in person instead of assuming that every Evolution trim is identical.
If an AMT is essential, include its complete on-road quote before treating the Kwid as affordable. The Delhi comparison demonstrates why transmission and city can change the result even when both versions appear below ₹5 lakh ex-showroom.

Autocar India’s roundup also lists selected base trims of the Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Citroen C3 below ₹5 lakh ex-showroom. Its Delhi examples put each above ₹5 lakh on-road. They are therefore useful if your budget is flexible or you are comparing cabin space, but they should not be presented as cars that certainly satisfy a ₹5 lakh all-in limit.

The same roundup assesses the Wagon R and C3 as offering more rear space than the Alto K10 or S-Presso. That is an editorial assessment rather than a measured interior test. If you regularly carry adults in the back or a large amount of luggage, sit in the second row and load your usual items before accepting a smaller car simply because its headline price is lower.
Choose by use case, not by the cheapest headline
| Your priority | Where to start | What to verify before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest possible new-car price | Alto K10 Std (O) or LXi (O) MT; compare the Kwid manual quote. | Final on-road total, included safety equipment and mandatory charges. |
| Two-pedal driving | Alto K10 VXi (O) AGS or an S-Presso/Kwid AMT that still fits your quote. | Exact AMT variant price, traffic test drive and insurance/registration total. |
| Claimed fuel-efficiency focus | S-Presso, whose reported ARAI petrol claim is 24.12–25.30 km/l. | That the figure is a certified test value and will not equal every driver’s consumption. |
| More rear passenger room | Compare the stretch-budget Wagon R or C3 with the smaller entry cars. | Whether your city quote exceeds ₹5 lakh and whether the base trim has the equipment you need. |
| Strict ₹5 lakh all-in ceiling | Start with the least expensive manual variant and request competing written quotes. | Registration, insurance, taxes and every fee; be ready to consider a used car. |
How to obtain a reliable on-road quote
- Choose the exact city and variant. “Alto K10” or “S-Presso” is not specific enough. Write down the trim, gearbox, fuel type and colour if it affects availability or cost.
- Request an itemised quotation dated the day you receive it. It should separate ex-showroom price, registration or road tax, insurance, fastag, handling or documentation charges where applicable, accessories and discounts.
- Ask which items are optional. Remove accessories or service packages you did not request. Do not let an optional bundle obscure the vehicle’s true price.
- Compare insurance on equal cover. A cheaper quote may have different own-damage, deductible or add-on terms. Compare the policy benefits and insurer, not just the premium.
- Check delivery and price validity. Ask whether the quote is locked until a stated date and whether a registration-rate change or stock-year change can alter it.
- Recalculate the total after discounts. Treat a promotional discount as conditional until the dealer states eligibility, documentation and expiry in writing.
- Keep the quote with the booking receipt. If the final invoice differs, you can identify whether the change is a tax, insurance, registration or dealer line item.
Manual versus AMT under this budget
A manual gearbox generally has the lowest entry price and leaves more of the budget for registration and insurance. It also requires clutch operation, which some drivers find tiring in heavy traffic. An AMT removes the clutch pedal and can be easier in stop-start use, but its price premium and automated shifts vary by model and trim. The Alto K10 VXi (O) AGS is listed at ₹4,94,900 ex-showroom, while its VXi+ AGS is ₹5,44,900, so selecting the higher trim can eliminate the budget before any on-road charge is added.
Take the exact car on a route that includes crawling traffic, a parking manoeuvre and an open stretch. Check whether the gearbox responds smoothly when you ease off the brake, join traffic or climb a ramp. Do not use an AMT’s claimed fuel figure as proof that it will cost less to run; driving style, traffic and air-conditioning use matter.

- Check that rear parking sensors, seat-belt reminders and child-seat anchor points are fitted if they are important to you.
- Ask whether a displayed feature is standard, optional or an accessory installed by the dealer.
- Do not rank these cars by a safety rating unless you have verified the rating body, tested model and test date and confirmed that it applies to the Indian variant you are buying.
Fuel-economy claims: use them correctly
The S-Presso’s 24.12–25.30 km/l figure is a claimed or certified ARAI result reported by Autocar India. It is produced under a standardised test and should not be treated as a promise of the number you will see at the pump. No comparable real-world tests for the Alto K10, Kwid or the other stretch-budget models are established in the available evidence, so a precise ranking would be misleading.
For a meaningful personal estimate, note your expected daily distance, traffic pattern, passenger load and fuel price, then compare models using the same assumptions. A test drive can reveal seating, visibility and gearbox suitability, but it cannot reproduce every owner’s fuel consumption.
New entry-level car or inspected used hatchback?
Autocar frames the decision as a new entry-level car with warranty and no previous wear versus a used, higher-segment hatchback. That is a general decision framework, not a guarantee of financing or condition. A used car may offer more rear space, boot room or equipment for the money, but its history, maintenance and remaining warranty must be verified.

If you consider used, pay for an independent inspection, verify the registration and service records, check for accident or flood damage and budget for immediate repairs, tyres and insurance. Compare the inspected car’s complete purchase cost with the new car’s written on-road quote rather than comparing a used listing price with an ex-showroom figure.
Common mistakes that push the purchase over budget
- Confusing ₹4.99 lakh ex-showroom with ₹4.99 lakh on-road: the difference can be substantial once local charges are added.
- Using an old launch price: the Kwid’s ₹4.29 lakh announcement is from September 2025 and does not confirm an October 2026 quote.
- Comparing unlike trims: an entry manual and a top AMT may share a model name but have different equipment and prices.
- Accepting a verbal total: insist on a dated, itemised quotation.
- Assuming a certified mileage number is real-world economy: use it only as a controlled comparison reference.
- Buying a stretch-budget car without checking the city total: the Tiago, Wagon R, Celerio and C3 examples in Delhi exceeded ₹5 lakh on-road despite qualifying ex-showroom.
- Choosing from a display car’s features: verify what is standard on the invoiced variant.
A practical buying order
- Set the ceiling as ex-showroom or all-in and write it at the top of your notes.
- Get current quotes for the Alto K10, S-Presso and Kwid in the same city.
- Remove every variant whose complete total exceeds your ceiling.
- Test-drive the remaining manual or AMT versions in representative traffic.
- Compare seating, rear-room and boot needs with the people and luggage you actually carry.
- Verify the exact safety and convenience equipment in the brochure and vehicle.
- Choose the lowest-priced car that meets those requirements, then recheck the final invoice before registration.
With five listed petrol variants below ₹5 lakh ex-showroom and one of them an AGS automatic, the Alto K10 is the easiest place to start. The S-Presso is the alternative for buyers drawn to its compact, tall-bodied format and reported ARAI efficiency claim. The Kwid remains worth a local quote when price is decisive, but its headline figures need the most careful date and city check. None is automatically the best choice for every Indian buyer: the correct answer depends on your city, transmission preference, passenger space, verified equipment and whether ₹5 lakh means ex-showroom or the final amount paid.
