For U.S. model year 2026, the strongest new-car choices in the current manufacturer information reviewed are the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. Mustang offers fastback and convertible body styles, with power ranging from a 315-hp EcoBoost to the 795-hp Dark Horse SC. Charger gives buyers a choice of gasoline or all-electric power, plus two- or four-door configurations. These are manufacturer-published specifications and claims, not independent test ratings.
2026 muscle-car ratings at a glance
There is no single objective winner here: the Mustang and Charger offer different body styles and powertrains, and the available manufacturer information does not provide standardized comparative tests for handling, braking, reliability, cabin quality, or ownership cost. The ratings below are editorial picks based on the documented specifications and configurations.
| Category | Pick | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Best V8 performance range | Ford Mustang | Ford lists several V8 models, from the GT and Dark Horse to the supercharged Dark Horse SC, rated at up to 795 maximum horsepower. |
| Best electrified performance | Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack | Dodge lists the all-electric model at 670 hp and claims a 3.3-second 0–60 mph time. |
| Best four-door muscle-car option | Dodge Charger | The Charger is offered in four-door form as well as two-door form; the lineup includes both gasoline and electric versions. |
| Best choice for a convertible | Ford Mustang | Ford lists both fastback and convertible body styles. |
These are category recommendations, not results from track or road testing. For the published manufacturer specifications, see Ford’s 2026 Mustang lineup, Ford’s Mustang Dark Horse SC details, Dodge’s 2026 Charger lineup, and the relevant Dodge pages for Charger R/T, Charger pricing, and Charger trims.
Which 2026 muscle car has the most horsepower?
Among the models covered here, Ford rates the Mustang Dark Horse SC at 795 maximum horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. Ford says the Dark Horse SC uses a 5.2-liter supercharged cross-plane-crank V8.

For context, Ford lists the Mustang EcoBoost at 315 hp. Dodge lists the gasoline Charger Scat Pack at 550 hp and the electric Daytona Scat Pack at 670 hp. Comparing horsepower alone does not establish which car is quickest in all conditions or best suited to a particular driver.
Ford Mustang: from EcoBoost to Dark Horse SC
Ford’s 2026 lineup page describes nine models and lists fastback and convertible body styles. Its range spans a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost rated at 315 hp and V8 models including the 500-hp Dark Horse. The Dark Horse SC sits above those documented figures with Ford’s 795-hp maximum rating.
Choose EcoBoost for the entry point
The EcoBoost is the lower-power entry to the Mustang lineup in the manufacturer information reviewed. It is the obvious starting point for buyers who want a new Mustang without stepping directly into a V8 trim. The cited lineup information does not establish a full side-by-side transmission or ownership-cost comparison, so confirm equipment and configuration on Ford’s current build pages.

Choose a V8 trim for a different performance tier
GT, Dark Horse, and Dark Horse SC occupy different performance and price tiers. Ford lists the Dark Horse at 500 hp and describes the Dark Horse SC as a supercharged V8 model. The available specifications do not provide a comparable independent ranking of their handling, braking, or day-to-day comfort.
Body-style flexibility is a Mustang advantage if a convertible matters: Ford lists both fastback and convertible versions. Confirm which body styles and equipment are available for the specific trim you want.
Dodge Charger: choose gas or electric, two or four doors
The 2026 Charger is a multi-energy lineup, not a single-engine car. Dodge offers gasoline R/T and Scat Pack versions as well as the all-electric Daytona Scat Pack. The lineup is also offered as a two-door or four-door. Those are meaningful buying choices: decide first whether you want a combustion engine or an EV, and whether passenger access and body style favor two doors or four.

Gasoline Charger R/T
Dodge lists the R/T with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo SIXPACK standard-output inline-six rated at 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. In a March 9, 2026 release, Dodge claims a 0–60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds. Those acceleration figures are Dodge claims; manufacturer test conditions may differ from independent testing.
Gasoline Charger Scat Pack
Dodge lists the gasoline Scat Pack at 550 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. Dodge says the gas R/T and Scat Pack can direct torque to the rear wheels on demand, while the lineup is described as all-wheel drive. Check the exact trim and drivetrain configuration when comparing vehicles.

The Daytona Scat Pack is the all-electric Charger option. Dodge lists it at 670 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque and claims a 3.3-second 0–60 mph time. It is also all-wheel drive. If you are considering the EV, charging access and your typical driving needs are practical decision factors; the specifications cited here do not establish a comparative ownership-cost or charging-time assessment.

Four-door practicality and cargo claims
Dodge highlights hidden-hatch cargo flexibility and offers a four-door Charger, but the manufacturer information cited here does not establish a directly comparable cargo measurement against Mustang. Matt McAlear, identified in Dodge’s release as Dodge CEO, called the R/T “a muscle car that can double as an everyday driver, with an award-winning interior and best in-class cargo volume.” That is Dodge’s promotional positioning, not an independently verified cargo comparison.

Dodge’s Charger FAQ lists U.S. starting prices of $49,995 for the R/T, $54,995 for the gasoline Scat Pack, and $59,995 for the Daytona Scat Pack; it says four-door models add $2,000. These are manufacturer-listed starting prices, not out-the-door totals.
Dodge’s separate trim page displays different starting figures: $51,995 and $56,995 in the material available. The pages therefore do not support presenting one settled starting price for every Charger configuration. Confirm the current price for the chosen trim and body style through Dodge’s build-and-price information and local dealers; destination, incentives, and inventory can affect what a buyer pays.

What about the Chevrolet Camaro?
The Chevrolet documents available for this comparison cover 2024 Camaro models, not a 2026 Camaro. The 2024 ZL1 specification sheet lists a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 rated at 650 hp, while a separate 2024 LT sheet documents several powertrain choices. Those prior-year documents do not establish a new 2026 Camaro, so it is not included as a current model-year choice. It may still be relevant to shoppers considering a used Camaro, but its year and condition should be evaluated separately. See Chevrolet’s 2024 Camaro documents.
How to choose the right 2026 muscle car
- Start with the powertrain: Mustang offers a turbocharged four-cylinder and V8 choices; Charger offers a turbocharged inline-six and a battery-electric option.
- Decide how many doors you need: Ford lists Mustang fastback and convertible forms; Dodge offers the Charger as a two-door or four-door.
- Set a performance and budget tier: Compare the exact trim rather than treating either nameplate as one specification. Manufacturer starting prices and equipment can vary by configuration.
- Account for EV charging if considering Daytona: Home, workplace, or public charging access can shape everyday convenience.
- Verify details before ordering: The reviewed official pages do not establish a complete transmission, ownership-cost, or side-by-side equipment comparison. Check the live manufacturer build pages and dealer pricing for the precise car you want.
Horsepower and acceleration figures in this article come from manufacturer pages or releases, not independent instrumented tests. They should not be read as a standardized head-to-head rating of real-world performance.
