What “minivan under ₹8 lakh” means in India
Indian listings often use minivan, MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) and people mover interchangeably. In practical shopping terms, the category covers vehicles that prioritise carrying several passengers and their luggage over a low-slung hatchback shape. This guide uses a strict boundary: new cars whose current manufacturer-listed starting or range price reaches no more than ₹8 lakh ex-showroom.

The Eeco’s upright van body makes passenger movement and loading the central priorities. Its five- and six-seat passenger versions provide a simple way to carry a small group without moving into the price band of larger MPVs. The trade-off is that no current independent road test establishing ride comfort, cabin refinement, handling, safety ranking or real-world fuel economy has been published. Treat it as a utility-focused vehicle rather than assuming car-like finish from the low price.
Fuel and mileage evidence
Autocar India lists ARAI-certified figures of 19.71 km/l for petrol and 26.78 km/kg for CNG, with Eeco ex-showroom pricing shown as ₹5.28–₹6.46 lakh. Autocar also says it has not tested the current Eeco itself. Those numbers are therefore certification figures reproduced by an editorial model page, not a hands-on result or a promise of the consumption you will see in traffic. Compare fuel cost using your route, fuel prices and likely passenger load.

- Buyers who need the lowest possible new passenger vehicle price in this category.
- Owners with convenient access to CNG and a willingness to choose an S-CNG variant.
- Users who value a simple, upright people mover more than a feature-rich family cabin.
During a test drive, sit in every intended passenger position, check how children or older passengers enter, and load the luggage you normally carry. A nominal seat count does not tell you how much usable luggage space remains.
Renault Triber: the flexible compact MPV
2026 range and trims
Renault India’s April 29, 2026 release places the Triber range at ₹5.80 lakh–₹8.00 lakh ex-showroom and names four variants: Authentic, Evolution, Techno and Emotion. The release describes five-, six- and seven-seat configurations, so do not treat every Triber listing as a fixed seven-seater. Ask the dealer which seat modules are included in the quoted variant.
How the seating system affects luggage
The Triber’s second row can fold and tumble with a one-touch operation. Renault states that boot capacity can reach 1,065 litres when the second row is fully folded. That figure is a maximum cargo configuration, not the luggage volume available with all passenger seats occupied. Before buying, measure the space in the arrangement your family will use most often: all seats up, the third row removed or folded, or the second row folded for bulky loads.
Equipment and transmission cautions
Renault identifies automatic climate control on the top Emotion version in the 2026 release. A July 23, 2025 Renault release described 21 standard safety features, including six airbags, manual transmission across the range and an Easy-R AMT on Emotion. Because that information is dated 2025, verify the current 2026 equipment sheet and transmission availability for the exact vehicle before relying on it. Do not infer that a feature announced for a previous model year remains unchanged.
Why it suits family buyers
The Triber is the stronger fit when your priorities are configurable seating, easier conversion between passengers and cargo, and more convenience equipment than a basic van. Renault India says the model has more than two lakh owners in India; that is a manufacturer-reported cumulative figure, not an independently audited market statistic. Renault’s Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Francisco Hidalgo Marques, called the upgraded model “the ultimate family car in the segment” in the April 2026 release. That is a company executive’s promotional description, not an independent test verdict.

Neither model can be declared the safety winner from the available material. The sources provide manufacturer equipment claims but no current independent crash-test comparison across these cars. A feature count, including the dated six-airbag statement for the Triber, is not a substitute for a current independent assessment.

Maruti Suzuki also sells the Tour V in its commercial passenger-carrier range. It is not simply another Eeco trim for private-car comparison. The Tour V has its own commercial configuration, specifications and pricing, so identify your intended use before looking at finance, registration or insurance.

The listed Tour V page describes petrol/CNG availability, a 1,197 cc K12N petrol engine and a five-speed manual; the loaded page shows a five-seat specification. The prices are geographically set to Delhi/New Delhi and must be reconfirmed locally. Commercial registration, permitted use and insurance treatment can differ from a private passenger car, so do not use this table to claim that a private Eeco is cheaper or better equipped.
What the ₹8-lakh ceiling does to your real budget
Every figure above is ex-showroom. Your on-road amount normally adds state registration and road tax, insurance, applicable taxes or fees, and any dealer-installed items. The amount varies by city and by the exact variant. A Triber at ₹8.00 lakh ex-showroom can therefore exceed an ₹8-lakh total purchase budget by a wide margin, while a lower-priced Eeco leaves more room for those additions.
- Choose the exact seat, fuel and trim configuration first.
- Request a written quotation for your registration city, showing ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, handling or optional items and the final payable total.
- Ask how long the quotation remains valid and whether a price revision can occur before invoicing.
- Obtain a second quote for the nearest competing variant rather than comparing only headline starting prices.
How to choose by passenger and luggage pattern
If five people travel most of the time
Compare the Eeco five-seater with the Triber variant that gives you the desired luggage arrangement. Sit in the rear seats with the front seats adjusted for the tallest regular occupants. Then place your normal bags behind the last occupied row. The Triber’s 1,065-litre claim does not apply when its second row is in use.

If you occasionally need six or seven seats
The Triber’s modular 5/6/7-seat concept is the more explicit fit, but confirm which modules are supplied and how quickly they can be folded or removed. The Eeco page lists five- and six-seat passenger versions, not a seven-seat configuration in the cited material.
If CNG running cost is central
The Eeco has an S-CNG listing, and the Tour V page lists CNG as well. Verify CNG station coverage on your regular routes, boot-space implications, service support and the exact registration category. Do not transfer the Eeco’s ARAI-listed mileage to the Triber or assume identical fuel costs.
If equipment and a family-car feel matter most
Start with the Triber’s four-trim ladder and inspect the exact Emotion, Techno, Evolution or Authentic specification. Automatic climate control is identified for Emotion in Renault’s 2026 release. The Eeco should be considered when price and utility outweigh expectations for extensive convenience equipment.

- Seats: Take the adults and children who will actually travel. Check thigh support, headroom, entry height and access to the rearmost seats.
- Luggage: Bring a representative suitcase, schoolbag or stroller. Test the seat arrangement you will use, not only an empty showroom configuration.
- Controls: Operate the air-conditioning, infotainment and seat-fold mechanisms yourself. Confirm which functions are standard on the quoted trim.
- Fuel choice: For CNG, locate the tank and check how much cargo space remains. For petrol, estimate your annual distance and local fuel prices rather than relying only on certification figures.
- Transmission: Drive in stop-start traffic and on an incline. If considering a Triber AMT, verify that the quoted 2026 car actually has Easy-R AMT; the cited statement is from July 2025.
- Visibility and access: Check child-seat placement, door opening in a tight parking space, reversing visibility and whether every passenger can reach a seat without climbing over luggage.
- Safety documentation: Request the current variant feature sheet and ask the dealer to identify airbags and driver-assistance or restraint equipment by trim. Do not rely on a generic model brochure.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming every Triber is a seven-seater
Renault describes 5-, 6- and 7-seat configurations. A listing that says “Triber” alone does not establish the seats included or the luggage space left behind them.

The Tour V belongs to Maruti Suzuki’s commercial passenger-carrier range and has separate Delhi-specific prices and specifications. Compare like with like: private passenger Eeco against private passenger alternatives, and commercial requirements against commercial products.

Budgeting from ex-showroom price only
Registration, insurance and city charges can move the final amount beyond the headline budget. Get a local, itemised quotation before deciding that a car qualifies.
Treating claimed mileage as guaranteed consumption
ARAI-certified figures are test-cycle values. Autocar’s Eeco page reproduces the figures and notes it has not tested the current car. Your result will vary with traffic, load, air-conditioning, tyre pressure and driving style.
Using old launch specifications as current facts
The July 2025 Triber release is useful background, but Renault’s April 2026 release controls the current price-range discussion. Reconfirm equipment and transmission at the time of purchase.
What is not established by the available evidence
There is no current independent head-to-head road test here that ranks the Eeco and Triber for ride comfort, noise, reliability, service cost, crash protection or real-world mileage. No industry-wide sales or market-size statistic is needed to answer this budget question. Nissan Gravite appeared in search-result phrasing, but a current official price and an eligible under-₹8-lakh variant were not established, so it should not be treated as a confirmed alternative.
Bottom line for an under-₹8-lakh shortlist
Choose the Maruti Suzuki Eeco when your first priority is the lowest priced new van-style passenger vehicle or an available S-CNG configuration, and you accept a utilitarian format. Choose the Renault Triber when modular seating, family-oriented convenience and the ability to change between passenger and cargo modes matter more, while remembering that the ₹8.00-lakh ceiling is ex-showroom and that the 1,065-litre cargo figure requires the second row to be folded. Keep the Ertiga as a stretch option only: its listed ₹8,90,000 starting price is already above the strict limit.
Before booking, match the exact variant to your passenger-and-luggage routine, obtain a city-specific on-road quotation, verify the current 2026 equipment sheet and take a test drive with the people and bags you intend to carry.
