Chevrolet Colorado ZR29 MIN

Best Midsize Pickup Alternatives to the Nissan Frontier for More Power (2026)

The Ranger Raptor leads in horsepower, the Tacoma TRD Pro leads in torque, and the Colorado ZR2 and Canyon AT4X add torque without adding horsepower. Here is how each alternative fits towing, trails, comfort and budget.

Short answer: Choose the Ford Ranger Raptor if maximum horsepower and fast off-road performance matter most. Its 405 hp leads this group by a wide margin. Choose the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro if torque is your priority: its hybrid powertrain produces 465 lb-ft, the highest torque figure here. The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and GMC Canyon AT4X both make 430 lb-ft, giving them a meaningful torque advantage over the Nissan Frontier without increasing horsepower. The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and Honda Ridgeline are capability or comfort alternatives, not outright power upgrades.

The 2026 Nissan Frontier is already a strong baseline, with a 3.8-liter direct-injection V6 rated at 310 hp at 6,400 rpm and 281 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm. The alternatives below are therefore aimed at specific improvements—acceleration, low-speed torque, technical-trail hardware, high-speed desert control, open-air trail access, or daily comfort—rather than simply replacing one midsize truck with another.

How the leading alternatives compare with the Frontier

Using the Frontier’s neutral brochure figures as the baseline, only three trucks in this comparison deliver both a different power advantage and a distinct off-road mission. The Ranger Raptor is the horsepower leader, the Tacoma TRD Pro is the torque leader, and the Colorado ZR2 and Canyon AT4X add torque while matching the Frontier’s horsepower. The other two models are included because their use cases can outweigh a smaller engine-output figure.

What the Frontier gives you—and what counts as an upgrade

The Frontier’s 310-hp V6 is not weak. Nissan describes it as class-leading standard horsepower and says it has more standard power and torque than the Toyota Tacoma; that comparison is a manufacturer marketing claim. For a neutral comparison, the brochure numbers are 310 hp and 281 lb-ft.

That distinction matters because a truck can feel stronger without gaining horsepower. Torque affects the force available at the wheels, especially when pulling away, climbing slowly over obstacles or carrying a load. Horsepower is more closely related to how quickly the engine can sustain work as speed rises. Gearing, transmission calibration, vehicle weight, tires and traction control also affect what you feel from the driver’s seat.

Against this baseline, the decision is straightforward:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Ranger Raptor adds 95 hp and 149 lb-ft.
  • The Tacoma TRD Pro adds 16 hp and 184 lb-ft.
  • The Colorado ZR2 and Canyon AT4X keep the Frontier’s 310 hp but add 149 lb-ft.
  • The Gladiator Rubicon and Ridgeline do not exceed the Frontier’s horsepower figure.

These comparisons do not establish a truck’s tow rating or payload. Those specifications vary with cab, drivetrain, axle ratio, tires and equipment, so use the current manufacturer specification for the exact configuration before choosing a trailer or payload. More torque is helpful, but it does not by itself make a truck the correct tow vehicle.

Ford Ranger Raptor: the clear horsepower choice

Power and mission

Edmunds reports 405 hp and 430 lb-ft from the Ranger Raptor’s turbocharged V6. That makes it the clear horsepower leader in this group and gives it a 119-hp advantage over the Tacoma TRD Pro and a 95-hp advantage over the Frontier.

  • Enhanced Fuel Efficiency: Sleek and aerodynamic design resulting in improved gas mileage, remains stable even at highway speeds, without any flapping or bouncing compared to soft top covers.

The Raptor is engineered for speed over rough ground rather than only for crawling at low speed. Its electronically controlled dampers are intended to keep the truck composed when the trail becomes fast, uneven and jump-prone, while the truck remains usable on pavement. If your idea of off-roading is desert running, fast fire roads or flowing trails, this is the most direct answer to the question “What midsize truck has more power than the Frontier?”

Who should buy it

  • Drivers who rank acceleration and high-speed suspension control above maximum payload or lowest price.
  • Owners who will alternate between highway driving and fast off-road routes.
  • Buyers who want the largest horsepower increase without moving to a full-size pickup.

Its 2026 starting price including destination is $58,965. That positions it below the Tacoma TRD Pro but above the Colorado ZR2 in this comparison. Fuel economy, warranty coverage, exact towing and payload ratings, and local inventory are configuration- and market-dependent and are not stated here.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: the torque leader

Power and mission

The Tacoma TRD Pro uses a standard hybrid powertrain rated by Edmunds at 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. It has the highest torque figure among these trucks—184 lb-ft more than the Frontier—and also exceeds the Frontier’s horsepower by 16 hp.

That torque advantage suits slow climbs, loose surfaces and situations where controlled wheel movement matters more than outright speed. The TRD Pro also combines specialized suspension components with shock-absorbing front seats, a useful pairing when the trail is rough for hours at a time. Its balance of torque, suspension tuning and trail equipment makes it the broadest all-around off-road choice in this group rather than a truck optimized only for one terrain type.

Who should buy it

  • Drivers who specifically want more torque than the Frontier.
  • Owners who mix technical trails, longer overland routes and everyday road use.
  • Buyers who value seat comfort and suspension compliance as much as engine output.

The 2026 starting price including destination is $66,045, the highest listed entry price in this comparison. Confirm the exact hybrid, cab and bed configuration before comparing tow or payload capability.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2: the lower-cost torque upgrade for technical trails

Power and hardware

The Colorado ZR2 produces 310 hp and 430 lb-ft according to Edmunds. It therefore does not add horsepower over the Frontier, but it adds 149 lb-ft of torque. The ZR2’s mission is technical terrain: its 3-inch lift, lockable front and rear differentials and all-terrain tires are aimed at rocks, ruts and tight trails where traction and clearance matter more than high-speed running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it can make sense

For a driver who wants stronger low-speed pull and serious trail equipment without paying the highest price in the group, the ZR2 is the most direct value play. Its output is enough to qualify as a torque upgrade while its hardware addresses obstacles that engine power alone cannot solve.

Edmunds lists a 2026 starting price including destination of $52,795, the lowest among the high-output off-road trims compared here. Check the selected cab, bed, tire and axle configuration when evaluating hauling or towing, because the ZR2’s trail equipment does not automatically determine its maximum ratings.

GMC Canyon AT4X: Colorado capability with a more upscale interior

Power and positioning

Edmunds describes the Canyon as a close relative of the Colorado, sharing the basic powertrain and off-road hardware. In AT4X form it produces 310 hp and 430 lb-ft—the same output as the Colorado ZR2 and more torque than the Frontier, but no additional horsepower.

The meaningful distinction is presentation and cabin refinement. The AT4X is intended for buyers who want the technical-trail capability of this platform with a more upscale interior environment. It occupies the space between a utilitarian trail truck and a premium-feeling daily driver.

Who should buy it

  • Drivers who want the Colorado family’s torque and trail equipment but prefer a richer cabin.
  • Owners who use the truck every day and care about interior atmosphere as much as trail hardware.
  • Buyers who do not need a horsepower increase but do want more torque than the Frontier.

The 2026 starting price including destination is $59,395. Exact fuel economy, warranty, inventory and tow ratings are not stated here and should be checked for the configuration sold in your area.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon: choose it for open-air capability, not power

What it does differently

The Gladiator Rubicon is listed by Edmunds at 285 hp, so it does not beat the Frontier’s 310 hp. Its reason for consideration is trail hardware and body configuration: front and rear lockers, a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, removable doors and a removable roof.

Those features change the driving experience and can provide access or articulation that a conventional midsize pickup cannot replicate. They also make the Rubicon a specialized choice. If you want open-air crawling and extreme-trail engagement, the Gladiator may fit better than a more powerful truck. If your priority is faster acceleration or more engine output, it is not the answer.

Edmunds lists a 2026 starting price including destination of $54,515. Verify the selected engine, axle, cab and bed specification before using any published towing or payload figure.

Honda Ridgeline: the comfort alternative rather than a power upgrade

Output and driving character

Honda’s official comparison page lists the Ridgeline’s 3.5-liter V6 at 280 hp. That is 30 hp below the Frontier, so it should not be selected by someone whose only goal is more power.

Best Value

  • Sleek & Modern Look: This truck bed tonneau cover features a smooth, contoured profile that reliably protects your cargo while giving your truck a clean, stylish appearance

The Ridgeline’s appeal is a smoother, comfort-oriented pickup experience and easy daily usability. It is a useful counterpoint for shoppers who like the utility of a bed but spend most of their time on pavement and do not need specialized rock-crawling or desert-speed equipment.

Who should consider it

  • Commuters who want a quieter, more carlike midsize pickup experience.
  • Families who value everyday comfort over maximum output.
  • Shoppers willing to trade engine performance for a less aggressive road-focused character.

Its price, torque figure, fuel economy, warranty details, exact tow rating and local inventory are not stated here. None of those omissions change the central conclusion: the Ridgeline is a comfort alternative, not a strict Frontier power upgrade.

Match the truck to the terrain

Your priority Best fit Why
Maximum horsepower and fast off-road pace Ford Ranger Raptor 405 hp, 430 lb-ft and electronically controlled dampers tuned for high-speed off-road use.

Technical rocks, ruts and tight trails at the lowest listed price among high-output trims Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 310 hp, 430 lb-ft, 3-inch lift, front and rear lockers and all-terrain tires.
Technical capability with a more upscale cabin GMC Canyon AT4X Colorado-related power and hardware with a more refined interior position.
Removable roof and doors plus extreme-trail hardware Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Front and rear lockers and a disconnecting front stabilizer bar, despite lower horsepower.
Comfort-focused daily pickup use Honda Ridgeline Road-oriented character; 280-hp V6 is not a power increase.

What to check before buying

Towing and payload

Do not infer a maximum trailer or payload rating from horsepower and torque alone. Match the exact cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, tires and equipment to the manufacturer’s current rating. Also check the trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight, braking requirements and the truck’s door-jamb payload label. The figures in this comparison identify power advantages, not a universal towing ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fuel economy

Fuel-economy results are not stated for these configurations. Turbocharged engines, hybrid systems, off-road tires, suspension lifts and added protective equipment can produce different results from similarly powered standard trims. Compare the official rating for the exact version you intend to buy rather than applying one trim’s result to the whole model line.

Warranty and service

Warranty terms are not stated here. Confirm powertrain coverage, hybrid-system coverage where applicable, roadside assistance, maintenance requirements and the availability of service in your area. A specialized off-road trim can also require more expensive tires, alignment checks and underbody repairs after hard trail use.

Cab, bed and availability

Cab and bed combinations affect passenger space, cargo length, turning clearance, payload and price. Inventory also varies by region, especially for high-performance trims. Before placing a deposit, confirm that the exact wheelbase, cab, bed, drivetrain and option package you want is actually allocated to a local dealer.

A practical buying decision

  1. Set the power target. If you need the largest horsepower jump, start with the Ranger Raptor. If low-speed pulling force matters more, start with the Tacoma TRD Pro, Colorado ZR2 or Canyon AT4X.
  2. Define the terrain. Pick fast desert trails for the Raptor, broad mixed-terrain use for the Tacoma, tight technical obstacles for the Colorado or Canyon, and open-air crawling for the Gladiator.
  3. Decide whether cabin refinement changes the answer. The Canyon AT4X emphasizes an upscale interior, while the Ridgeline prioritizes comfort over trail specialization.
  4. Check the exact work requirements. Use current manufacturer tow and payload tables for the specific configuration, then compare those limits with your loaded trailer or cargo.
  5. Price the complete purchase. Include destination, required options, tires, fuel, insurance and likely trail-use maintenance—not just the advertised starting figure.
  6. Confirm local support. Verify that the dealer can service the engine, hybrid system or specialized suspension and that replacement tires and parts are readily available.

Bottom line

There is no single best replacement for the Frontier; there is only the truck that best matches how you plan to use it, as summarized in the Edmunds review carried by The Associated Press. The Ranger Raptor is the decisive horsepower choice. The Tacoma TRD Pro is the torque leader and the broadest all-around trail option. The Colorado ZR2 is the value-oriented technical-trail upgrade, while the Canyon AT4X adds a more upscale cabin to similar capability. The Gladiator Rubicon wins only when removable body panels and extreme-trail hardware are central to the brief, and the Ridgeline makes sense when daily comfort matters more than output.
