The BMW X5 and Genesis GV80 earn strong scores from both Car and Driver and MotorTrend, while MotorTrend puts the Lincoln Nautilus first. For a plug-in hybrid, the BMW X5 xDrive50e is the sportier choice in Edmunds’ comparison; the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e offers a longer EPA-estimated electric range and a lower reported starting price. The right pick depends on your priorities—and on whether you need two or three rows.

Which luxury midsize SUV is best for 2026?
Use the rankings as a shortlist, not as a single shared league table. Car and Driver and MotorTrend publish their own ratings and rankings, and their scores are not directly interchangeable. The BMW X5 and Genesis GV80 stand out across both publishers; the Lincoln Nautilus leads MotorTrend’s list.

Scores, rankings, starting prices, and fuel-economy estimates in this table are reported on the publishers’ 2026 pages; they are not results from one normalized test. Car and Driver describes evaluating roughly 200 data points in its separate two-row and three-row ranking descriptions, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. How to choose between the top picks
BMW X5: a strong all-around candidate
The X5 scores 9.5/10 on Car and Driver’s page and ranks second on MotorTrend’s list. It is also the sportier of the two plug-in hybrids in Edmunds’ comparison of the X5 xDrive50e and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e. That makes it a logical first drive for shoppers who want performance alongside luxury and practicality.

Genesis GV80: a strong cross-ranking alternative
The GV80 also receives 9.5/10 from Car and Driver and places third on MotorTrend’s list. Its listed starting price is lower than the X5’s on both ranking pages. That difference is useful for screening, but it does not establish that similarly equipped trims cost less; compare the actual configurations you would buy.
Lincoln Nautilus: MotorTrend’s top-ranked choice
MotorTrend ranks the Nautilus first, ahead of the X5 and GV80. Its top position is a reminder that editorial weightings and category boundaries shape “best” lists. Consider it if you want to explore MotorTrend’s winner rather than treating another publisher’s ratings as a universal verdict.

Porsche Cayenne, Lexus RX, and Mercedes-Benz GLE
The Cayenne appears in both publishers’ lists and has the highest listed starting price among the models shown. The RX and GLE are included on MotorTrend’s list; for those models, safety grades are also worth examining rather than relying on ranking position alone. The GLE 450e has a distinct plug-in-hybrid comparison below.

Choose the GLE 450e for range and a comfort-first character
Edmunds describes the GLE as serene and comfortable, with light steering that is maneuverable at low speeds, and reports a 50-mile EPA-estimated electric range. The article’s reported starting price is lower than the X5’s, but confirm current pricing and what is included when comparing offers.
Plug-in value depends on charging
Both vehicles pair a chargeable battery with a gasoline engine. Their electric-range estimates do not guarantee fuel savings: the benefit depends on how often you charge and how you drive. A plug-in hybrid is most useful when your routine includes short trips and you can charge at home. The performance, price, range, fuel-economy, and warranty figures above are those reported in Edmunds’ January 21, 2026 comparison; verify current details before buying. Read the Associated Press story supplied by Edmunds.
What do the 2026 safety ratings say?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s current midsize luxury SUV page lists both the 2026 Genesis GV80 and 2026 BMW X5 as Top Safety Pick+. The same page reports a Poor grade for the 2026 Lexus RX in the moderate-overlap front test. For the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, it lists Marginal front crash prevention for the standard system and Acceptable for an optional system.
These are specific award and test results, not a complete measure of every aspect of a vehicle’s safety. Check the test category, model year, and equipment or system distinction on the IIHS midsize luxury SUV ratings page, which can be updated. A missing award on that page is not, by itself, proof that a vehicle is unsafe.
What to compare before choosing
Once you have a shortlist, compare the same kinds of details across the exact trims you would consider. The available published figures do not provide a complete, consistent side-by-side for every model, so use current manufacturer specifications and dealer quotes to fill in the gaps.
Quick Recap
- Rows and seating: Decide whether you need two or three rows, then verify seating for the exact trim.
- Price: Treat ranking-page starting prices as screening figures. Compare similarly equipped vehicles and confirm fees and current offers.
- Driving character: Test-drive the candidates you are weighing; for the X5 xDrive50e and GLE 450e, Edmunds’ comparison provides a specific performance and comfort contrast.
- Fuel or electric use: Compare the relevant powertrain and your ability to charge at home. Do not infer a fuel-saving outcome from an electric-range estimate alone.
- Cabin technology and comfort: Try the controls and seating in the vehicles you are considering; the cited ranking data do not provide a consistent cabin-technology comparison across the full group.
- Safety: Check current IIHS grades for the specific model year and standard or optional safety system.
