It was not a gasoline Kawasaki KLR650 converted with a different fuel system: HDT developed a purpose-built compression-ignition engine for the motorcycle.
What is the M1030M1?
The HDT M1030M1 is a militarized motorcycle developed by Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT). A 2005 White House Office of Management and Budget archive describes it as a 584 cc machine intended for an operator, one passenger, documents, and light cargo, under the procurement label “Single Battlefield Fuel Motorcycle.” The archive’s procurement description places it in a light-transport role.
The M1030M1 is commonly associated with the Kawasaki KLR650, but that association does not mean the military motorcycle was simply a standard gasoline KLR650 with a fuel-system swap. In a 2008 Cycle World account, HDT chief Fred Hayes said: “We want to make it clear that this is not a ‘conversion,’ but a completely new engine from the ground up,” the magazine reported.
What fuel does it use?
The M1030M1 was engineered for diesel and JP-8 operation. JP-8 is the specified military fuel relevant to the “jet fuel” description; the phrase does not mean the bike can safely run on any aviation fuel. The Navy-branch Small Business Innovation Research award record for HDT’s project explicitly describes a modern compression-ignition motorcycle engine intended to operate on diesel/JP-8. The award record says the work included redesigning components and managing engine size and weight while targeting the performance and operability of the Marine Corps M1030.

Fuel names matter. A Marine Corps policy message about moving from JP-8 to F-24 identifies F-24 as the NATO designation for commercial Jet A with an additive package that converts Jet A-1 into JP-8. In that policy context, F-24 and JP-5 are listed as primary fuels for applicable ground tactical equipment, with diesel as an alternate. That message describes a particular military fuel-policy setting; it is not a blanket rule for every vehicle or location. JP-8, JP-5, F-24, Jet A, and diesel should not be treated as interchangeable names.
How is it different from a gasoline KLR650?
The key difference is the engine: the M1030M1 uses a purpose-built diesel, compression-ignition powerplant rather than the KLR650’s gasoline engine. According to the 2008 Cycle World report, HDT retained the Kawasaki transmission and electrical system while creating the new engine. That reported shared equipment does not establish that ordinary KLR650 engine parts fit the M1030M1.

| 4.25 gallons | Cycle World, 2008 reported fuel-tank capacity. |
The 584 cc and 611 cc figures come from different dated records and should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than being silently reconciled. Likewise, the reported 96 mpg figure is HDT’s claim under the stated 55 mph condition, not a general real-world mileage guarantee.
Why build a military motorcycle for JP-8?
The rationale was fuel logistics. Using a motorcycle able to run on the military’s common battlefield fuel reduces reliance on gasoline as a separate supply for this vehicle. The 2005 archive’s “Single Battlefield Fuel Motorcycle” label and the earlier SBIR project description connect that logistics goal to the M1030’s light-transport mission.

In the 2008 report, retired Marine, off-road rider, and civilian Transport Motorcycle Project Officer Jack Heric said: “Our motorcycles were some of the last vehicles in the military that ran on gasoline,” according to Cycle World. That is Heric’s explanation of the motivation, not a formal Marine Corps policy quotation.

Cycle World discussed a planned civilian model in 2008, but a plan reported at that time is not evidence that the M1030M1 is currently in production or available in civilian inventory. Current civilian stock and operational fleet status are not established by the cited historical records. Buyers should also avoid assuming that a standard gasoline KLR650 manual or engine part applies to the M1030M1’s specialized diesel engine.
