For a 2024-model-year shortlist, the Lexus TX offers a useful documented cargo figure; the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Cadillac XT6 are also worth checking, while Acura MDX, Genesis GV80 and Volvo XC90 have relevant IIHS award recognition. This is a guide to historical 2024 models, which shoppers in 2026 may be considering used—not a ranking of current new SUVs.
How to choose a luxury SUV that really seats seven
“Seven-passenger” can describe a particular seating layout, not every example of a model. A second-row bench typically makes room for three passengers; captain’s chairs usually reduce the total to six. Some SUVs make the third row optional or limit particular layouts to certain trims. Finally, inspect the cargo area with the third row raised: a large maximum cargo figure with seats folded does not tell you how much room remains for bags on a full-family trip.

What the documented cargo figures do—and do not—tell you
The 2024 Lexus TX is the clearest practical-space reference in this shortlist: Lexus reported 20.2 cubic feet behind its third row and up to 57.4 cubic feet when that row is folded. The figures are from the manufacturer’s 2023 announcement, not a common independent test across these SUVs. Cadillac’s 2024 XT6 brochure gives 78.7 cubic feet behind the first row, a different seat configuration that cannot be compared directly with the TX’s behind-third-row number.
When comparing vehicles, seek the same measurement for each: cargo capacity with every passenger seat raised. If that figure is unavailable, use a hands-on luggage test rather than treating maximum cargo capacity as evidence of family-trip capacity.

Safety awards are useful, but limited evidence
IIHS’s 2024 award listing includes the 2024 Acura MDX, 2024–25 Genesis GV80 (subject to a production-date restriction), and 2024 Volvo XC90 among its Top Safety Pick+ recipients. Check the IIHS award listing for the exact eligible model years and conditions. An award is not a ranking of every three-row luxury SUV, and it does not mean every crash scenario or configuration has been assessed identically.
Separately, IIHS reported a poor result for the Cadillac XT6 in its updated moderate-overlap front test. That is a result for a specific test, not a complete verdict on the vehicle’s safety. In its related release, IIHS President David Harkey said, “It’s encouraging that more than half of the 2024 midsize luxury SUVs we tested performed well in our updated moderate overlap front crash test.” His statement refers to the tested group in that release, not all luxury three-row SUVs. Use year- and test-specific ratings alongside the wider safety equipment and vehicle-history checks relevant to the exact used SUV.

How to shop for a 2024 example in 2026
- Filter for the layout, then verify it. Search for seven seats, but confirm the VIN-specific window sticker or equipment record shows the bench or third row you need. Listings can confuse model availability with the configuration of the vehicle for sale.
- Inspect passenger access and fit. Bring the child seats and, if possible, the people who will regularly use the third row. Test entry and exit with the second-row seats in the positions you actually use.

- Check safety evidence by year and test. Confirm the exact model year and production eligibility on IIHS’s listing, and distinguish an award from a result in one specific crash test.
Which models deserve a closer look?
Start with the Lexus TX if a documented 2024 behind-third-row cargo figure is a priority, while remembering the figure is manufacturer-reported. Consider the Q7 or GLS only after confirming that the specific example has the seven-seat layout you need; their cited configuration details come from current pages, not year-specific 2024 archives. The XT6 is a documented seven-passenger candidate, but its cited cargo number is with the first row only, and IIHS’s poor result applies to one updated test. MDX, GV80 and XC90 bring relevant IIHS award recognition, but the award alone does not verify the seating layout or establish a complete model comparison.
No single winner is supported by comparable evidence across price, passenger comfort, cargo room, powertrains, safety and used-vehicle condition. A short in-person fit test and a VIN-specific equipment check will answer the most consequential question: whether the particular SUV you are considering works for your passengers and their luggage.
