The best iridium spark plug is the exact plug specified for your vehicle and engine—not a universally superior model. Start by checking the vehicle maker’s service information or a spark-plug manufacturer’s catalog for the compatible part number. Then compare the plug’s intended purpose and application-specific service interval. “Iridium” identifies electrode material; it does not guarantee a particular performance gain or long replacement interval.
How to choose the right iridium spark plug
- Identify the vehicle and engine. Year, make, model, and engine determine which plugs may fit.
- Confirm the exact part number. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s service information or a manufacturer catalog. Do not choose by product-family name alone: thread, reach, heat range, electrode configuration, and compatibility are application-specific.
- Match the plug to your priority. If more frequent replacement is acceptable, a performance-oriented design may be an option where the manufacturer specifies it. If longer service life is the priority, look for a long-life type approved for the application.
- Follow the specified service interval and installation instructions. Use the vehicle maker’s maintenance schedule when available, and check the instructions for the exact plug before installation.
For a meaningful shortlist, compare only plugs confirmed to fit the same vehicle and engine. Consider the part number, design purpose, published interval for that application, electrode configuration and specified gap, and the quality of evidence behind performance claims. Iridium branding alone is not a useful ranking.
How long do iridium spark plugs last?
It depends on the plug design and application. DENSO says some iridium plugs have a lifespan similar to a normal plug, while other iridium designs are long-life types. Its service-life guidance gives about 20,000 km as an example for normal-lifespan iridium plugs and about 100,000 km for long-life plugs. DENSO also lists 10,000 km for light automobiles and 5,000 km for motorcycles in the normal-lifespan category. These are manufacturer category examples, not universal replacement schedules; follow the interval for the vehicle and exact plug. DENSO’s spark plug service-life guidance.
Performance-oriented and long-life examples
DENSO IRIDIUM POWER
DENSO describes IRIDIUM POWER as a performance-oriented line with a 0.4 mm iridium-alloy center electrode and a special ground electrode. The company claims improved acceleration and torque compared with standard plugs, and also describes improved fuel efficiency. Those are manufacturer claims, not proof of a particular gain in every vehicle. DENSO IRIDIUM POWER product information.

DENSO IRIDIUM TOUGH
DENSO promotes IRIDIUM TOUGH for reduced electrode wear and longer useful life. That positioning does not establish a universal service interval or vehicle compatibility. Confirm the exact part number and application-specific schedule before buying. DENSO iridium plug product information.
IK20 and SK20R11: examples, not general recommendations
DENSO’s technical manual compares IK20 as a performance-type example, with an example interval of 15,000–20,000 km, and SK20R11 as a long-life-type example, with an example interval of 100,000 km. These figures illustrate that iridium plugs can have different intended lifespans; they do not show that either part fits a particular vehicle. DENSO spark plug technical information.

Do iridium plugs improve acceleration or fuel economy?
DENSO claims that IRIDIUM POWER improves acceleration, torque, and fuel efficiency compared with standard plugs. That claim should not be treated as a guaranteed result of replacing plugs: the evidence cited here does not establish a vehicle-wide real-world gain across applications or brands. Choose a plug that meets the vehicle’s specification, and do not assume a different plug will add power or improve economy.

Do not casually adjust a fine-electrode plug’s gap. DENSO’s 2025 catalog cautions against adjusting fine-electrode plugs such as iridium plugs. Check the vehicle and plug instructions for the required gap and installation procedure; do not assume the gap should be changed. DENSO 2025 spark plug catalog.
