The RC F is the more focused V8 coupe; the four-door IS 500 is the better fit when you need a performance sedan. Neither the LC nor RC F is an ongoing model line: Lexus says the LC is retired, and RC/RC F production ended after the 2025 model year. Reliability cannot be ranked from Lexus specifications or warranty terms alone, so a used car’s records and inspection matter as much as its badge.
What is the best Lexus sports car?
For a two-door that puts comfort and long-distance driving ahead of track-focused intent, choose the LC 500. For a more performance-oriented V8 coupe, the RC F is the stronger match. If you need four doors, consider the IS 500, but treat it as a sport sedan rather than a coupe.
These distinctions matter because “sports car” can mean a dedicated two-door, a grand tourer, or a quick sedan. The LC and RC F are coupes, with the LC also available as a convertible; the IS 500 has four doors. The LC’s 2025 lineup also included the hybrid LC 500h, which has a different powertrain from the V8 LC 500.
How do the Lexus LC, RC F and IS 500 compare?
| Model | Body style and role | Powertrain and manufacturer figures | Availability context |
|---|---|---|---|
| LC 500 | Two-door luxury grand touring coupe | 471-hp V8 and 10-speed transmission, according to the 2025 Lexus brochure. | Lexus’s current model page says the LC line is retired. Lexus announced 2026-model-year LC cars in July 2025, but that announcement does not establish ongoing availability; check local dealer inventory. |
| LC 500 Convertible | Open-top grand touring car | V8 LC variant; the cited 2025 brochure lists the LC 500 Convertible, but the figures here do not establish its full equipment or performance details. | Part of the LC line Lexus now describes as retired. Remaining stock and used availability vary. |
| LC 500h | Two-door hybrid grand tourer | 354 net combined horsepower, per the 2025 Lexus brochure. This is a combined hybrid output, not the V8 LC 500’s engine rating. | Part of the LC line Lexus now describes as retired. Remaining stock and used availability vary. |
| RC F Final Edition | Two-door performance coupe | Naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, 472 hp, eight-speed automatic and estimated 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds, per Lexus’s 2025 announcement. | Lexus said RC and RC F production would end after the 2025 model year; shop used cars and any remaining dealer stock. |
| RC 300/350 | Two-door coupe with lower-output options than RC F | 2025 RC 300: 241-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive; RC 300 AWD: 260-hp 3.5-liter V6; RC 350: 311-hp 3.5-liter V6. Lexus estimates 0–60 mph in 5.8 seconds for RC 350 RWD and 6.0 seconds for AWD. | RC production was announced to end after the 2025 model year. Configuration and equipment vary by trim. |
| IS 500 | Four-door high-performance sport sedan | Naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 rated at 472 hp and an eight-speed automatic, per Lexus’s performance overview. | Confirm the exact model year’s availability and equipment; the overview does not establish current inventory. |
Manufacturer specifications and acceleration estimates are not independent test results. Figures above are tied to the cited 2025 materials or Lexus overview and should not be applied automatically to other years or markets.

Which Lexus coupe has a V8?
LC 500: the luxury-led V8 choice
The 2025 LC 500 pairs a 471-hp V8 with a 10-speed transmission. It is the choice for buyers who want a striking two-door with grand-touring priorities rather than the RC F’s explicitly performance-focused setup. Lexus also offered the LC 500 Convertible and the hybrid LC 500h; the hybrid’s stated 354 net combined horsepower is not a V8 rating.
Lexus’s LC page now calls the line retired. The company’s newsroom archive lists announcements for 2026 LC 500 and LC 500 Convertible models dated July 18, 2025. Those were 2026 model-year announcements made in 2025; the current retired status means shoppers should distinguish any remaining new-old-stock from an active model lineup. Verify a specific car’s status with a local dealer.

RC F Final Edition: the more focused V8 coupe
Lexus specifies the 2025 RC F Final Edition with a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 rated at 472 hp, an eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic, F-tuned adaptive suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Lexus estimates 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds; that is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test result.
The announcement also lists Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires—255/35ZR19 front and 275/35ZR19 rear—on forged 19-inch BBS wheels, with Brembo brakes. Confirm the tire placard and exact fitment before replacing tires, since a car’s wheels and specification determine what fits. Lexus described the 2025 RC F as a mono-spec Final Edition and said RC/RC F production would conclude after that model year, making the Final Edition a used-car or remaining-stock purchase rather than a continuing future-year option.

RC 300 and RC 350: coupe shape with less output
The 2025 RC range provides a less powerful route into the coupe body style. Lexus lists a 241-hp turbo four-cylinder in the rear-wheel-drive RC 300, a 260-hp V6 in the RC 300 AWD, and a 311-hp V6 in RC 350 variants. Lexus estimates the RC 350 at 5.8 seconds to 60 mph with rear-wheel drive and 6.0 seconds with all-wheel drive. Transmission and configuration depend on trim, so compare the exact car rather than relying on the model name alone.
Is the Lexus RC F discontinued?
Yes. On January 16, 2025, Lexus announced that RC and RC F production would end after the 2025 model year. The company said the 2025 RC F would be a mono-spec Final Edition. Buyers shopping now should focus on used examples and any unsold dealer inventory; the announcement does not establish that a particular vehicle remains available.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy a Lexus LC or RC F?
Choose between them by deciding what kind of drive and ownership proposition you want, then assess the actual vehicle. The LC 500 is the better fit when luxury-led touring is the priority; the RC F Final Edition is the more performance-focused coupe, with a specific, limited final-year configuration. A used LC 500h is a separate hybrid proposition, not a lower-powered version of the V8 in every other respect.

- Choose the LC 500 if you want the grand-touring character and V8 configuration documented for the 2025 model.
- Consider the LC 500h if you want the LC coupe with its hybrid powertrain; compare the exact year and equipment.
- Choose the RC F if its focused setup and V8 performance are more important than buying an ongoing model line.
- Consider an RC 300 or RC 350 if the coupe body style matters more than having the RC F’s V8.
- Choose the IS 500 instead if four doors are essential; it is a sedan, not a substitute coupe.
For any used example, compare model year, configuration, in-service date, remaining warranty eligibility, service history, tire and brake wear, and inspection findings. The 2025 RC brochure search listing gives warranty terms of four years/50,000 miles for the limited warranty and six years/70,000 miles for the powertrain warranty. Those terms do not establish coverage for a particular used car: verify the applicable warranty guide, in-service date, mileage and vehicle history with Lexus.
Is a Lexus LC 500 reliable?
The official Lexus product and warranty information cited here does not establish comparative reliability rates, repair frequency, repair costs or long-term durability for the LC 500, RC F, IS 500 or older F models. It would be misleading to call one the most reliable based only on the brand’s reputation or warranty duration.
For a used performance car, evaluate the individual example rather than treating a model-level reputation as proof. Review maintenance records, check recall status, obtain an independent pre-purchase inspection, and look for model-year-specific owner evidence. Ask the inspecting shop to document the condition of wear items such as tires and brakes and to identify any concerns that warrant further diagnosis.
What about older Lexus performance cars?
The LFA, IS F and GS F are historical Lexus performance models, not current new-car alternatives. They may interest shoppers seeking an older or collectible Lexus, but their market values and reliability are not established by the cited material. Research the specific model year, maintenance history, parts and service needs, and condition before comparing one with an LC or RC.
