This is a criteria-led shortlist—not a definitive ranking from one head-to-head test. The best choice depends on how many rows you need and how each vehicle feels to you on an actual drive.
How to use this shortlist
The models below are grouped by size and passenger needs, not ranked from best to worst. The reviewed sources assess different vehicles in different ways, so they do not establish an apples-to-apples test of ten SUVs for long-trip comfort. They do support several useful candidates and trade-offs.
- Check seat fit in person. Look for supportive cushioning and enough adjustment to stay comfortable; a general comfort rating cannot predict how a seat will fit your body.
- Assess the cabin and ride at highway speed. Road noise, tire choice, pavement, and how the vehicle is loaded can change the experience. A trim designed for off-road use may trade some road-focused refinement for capability.
- Count usable seats, not just rows. Try the rows your passengers will occupy, then check whether their luggage fits with those seats in use.
- Plan the trip around energy use. Compare highway efficiency or range and the convenience of refueling or charging, rather than relying only on combined figures.
- Test the exact trim. Comfort equipment, controls, and driver-assistance features vary by trim. Confirm what is included on the model you are considering.
Two-row SUVs for smaller groups
2026 Honda Passport
The two-row Passport is a midsize candidate for travelers who want room for adults without a third row. Edmunds describes its cabin as spacious, with supportive, well-cushioned front seats and ample room for adults in both rows. It also notes physical climate controls and says the V6 feels under-stressed. The trade-off identified in that review is highway road noise, so listen for it on your own route or a similar surface. Trim matters for road use. Honda says the 2026 Passport TrailSport has off-road-tuned suspension and all-terrain tires; that setup favors capability rather than being a guarantee of the quietest, smoothest highway experience. Check the equipment on the specific trim. Honda’s 2026 press kit describes its brake feel this way: “Overall, the new brake system provides a comfortable and refined feel at low speeds, predictable and easy operation on the highway, a fun-to-drive feel on winding roads, and reassuring high-performance stopping in emergency situations.” This is Honda’s product description, not an independent test. 2026 Mazda CX-50
The CX-50 appears in Car and Driver’s 2026 SUV rankings and Capital One’s road-trip selection. Capital One notes standard all-wheel drive and its safety-pick rationale, but the reviewed passages do not establish the CX-50 as among the quietest or softest-riding SUVs. Treat AWD as a relevant feature for your conditions, not proof of long-haul comfort; assess ride, noise, seat fit, and luggage space yourself. Hyundai Palisade
In Edmunds’ comparison, the Palisade stands out for a quiet, roomy interior, space even for third-row passengers, and an exceptionally smooth ride. Those qualities make it a compelling family-trip candidate when several rows will be occupied. Edmunds reports adult-size seating in all three rows, easy entry, substantial cargo utility, a quiet interior, and a smooth ride over bumps. Its comparison also flags distracting controls and the absence of a hybrid option. Luxury choice for extended trips
Mercedes-Benz GLS
Edmunds describes the GLS as particularly suited to extended trips, highlighting adjustable, heated, and ventilated front seats. This is a luxury-oriented option for buyers who value seat adjustment and climate comfort; verify the equipment on the exact model and trim under consideration. - Set up the driver’s seat. Adjust the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors as you would for a long drive. Spend enough time in the position to notice pressure points rather than judging only by a quick showroom sit.
- Drive at highway speed. Listen for wind and tire noise, and note whether bumps unsettle the cabin. If possible, use pavement similar to the roads you travel.
- Test every occupied row. Have the people who will travel with you sit in their likely seats. Check entry, legroom, headroom, and whether the seat itself feels supportive.
- Load the trip’s luggage. Confirm that bags fit with the passenger seats in use; a large cargo figure does not tell you how much space remains in your actual configuration.
- Review the exact trim’s equipment. Verify comfort features, controls, and driver-assistance equipment against the current manufacturer listing and the vehicle’s window sticker.
- Compare trip logistics. Use highway-specific efficiency or range information where available, and map fuel or charging stops for the route you expect to drive.
- Confirm model year and availability. Check the manufacturer’s current U.S. model-year lineup and local inventory before treating a vehicle mentioned in an older or differently dated guide as available.
Why these are candidates, not a ranked top ten
The sources behind this selection use different criteria and do not provide a single, controlled comparison of ten SUVs. For example, Car and Driver describes its road-trip list as favoring smooth rides and strong real-world 75-mph fuel economy and/or large fuel tanks, with rankings drawing on roughly 200 data points. Edmunds’ comfort guide says, “The most comfortable SUVs in America have roomy interiors with enough space for adult passengers, and they prioritize ride comfort over ultimate cornering grip.” These are useful perspectives, but neither establishes a common long-trip comfort score for every model named here.
