Use Comfort for ordinary commuting, Sport for a sharper but still usable public-road drive, and +R for a prepared track. Comfort reduces steering effort, softens the adaptive dampers, smooths throttle response and uses gentler rev matching. Sport firms the car and quickens its responses without the severe ride of +R. +R delivers the most immediate throttle, firmest damping, heaviest steering feedback and a track-oriented display. Individual is the useful compromise when you want Sport engine response but Comfort ride quality.
Quick answer: which mode should you choose?
The best setting depends more on surface and purpose than on how aggressively you want the car to feel. A rough city street can make the firmest setting slower and less comfortable, while a smooth circuit rewards the extra control of +R. Use this as the starting decision:

These are starting points, not permanent rules. Tires, temperature, rain, pavement quality, circuit layout and your experience can change the most effective choice. On public roads, remain within local laws and leave stability-system decisions in the conservative position unless your owner’s manual, training and the venue specifically support another setting.
What each Civic Type R mode changes
Comfort
Comfort is the sensible default when the car is being used as transportation. Honda’s description combines several changes: the adaptive dampers provide a more compliant ride, steering assistance is lighter, throttle response is smoother and rev matching is less abrupt. The result is less effort in traffic and less impact transmitted through a broken urban road.

The mode is also useful when you are not driving slowly. On a long motorway run, the lighter steering and softer damping reduce the constant corrections and jolts that accumulate over hours. A smoother accelerator map makes it easier to hold a steady speed, and gentler rev matching makes ordinary downshifts less conspicuous to passengers.
Comfort does not remove the Type R’s underlying hardware or prevent you from accelerating decisively. It changes the control calibration around that hardware. If you find the car busy or tiring on your normal route, changing to Comfort is more likely to help than trying to make the car feel more special with a firmer mode.
Sport
Sport is the middle calibration. The dampers are firmer, steering is more direct, throttle response is stronger and rev matching is faster. Honda positions it as a sharper, more enjoyable setting while retaining more everyday usability than +R.

Choose Sport on smooth public roads when you want the accelerator to respond with less pedal movement and the front end to feel more immediate. It can make a familiar road more engaging without imposing +R’s maximum steering effort and severe damping on every expansion joint. On a patchy road, however, the additional firmness can reduce comfort and may make the car feel less settled than Comfort.
Sport also makes a useful diagnostic step. If Comfort feels too muted but +R is tiring, drive the same stretch in Sport and change only one other setting at a time in Individual later. That approach lets you identify whether the difference you want is in throttle, steering, damping, sound or rev matching rather than adding every aggressive calibration at once.
+R
+R is the performance setting for a prepared track rather than a badge of honor for every trip. It gives the most immediate engine response, the firmest adaptive-damper setting, the highest steering effort and strongest steering feedback. Honda describes it as the mode that “unleashes the beast on track day” and calls it the optimal track choice.

The very firm damping can be a disadvantage on rough public pavement. If the surface has potholes, broken patches or frequent sharp ridges, the suspension has less room to absorb them, and the car can become tiring or less confidence-inspiring. On a smooth circuit, that same control can reduce body movement and make the car’s reactions easier to read during braking and cornering.

The display uses a track-oriented layout rather than the normal Comfort or Sport presentation, putting performance information in a more prominent arrangement. The mode can make the engine sound more powerful as well; whether that is helpful or fatiguing depends on the session length and your tolerance for noise.
Individual
Individual is for drivers who can identify which response they want to change without changing everything else. Honda’s system lets you create combinations from the first three modes, and Honda Information Center material says there are 486 possible combinations. The number is useful as an indication of how much adjustment is available, not as a reason to search for one universally “correct” profile.
A practical mixed-use baseline is Comfort suspension and steering, Sport engine response and rev matching, and a quieter engine-sound setting. This is editorial guidance, not a Honda factory prescription. It keeps the ride and parking effort civil while giving the accelerator a more immediate feel. Try one category at a time and drive the same route before changing another; otherwise you will not know which adjustment produced the benefit or the drawback.

The table describes the documented character of each calibration. It does not mean every subsystem has only one fixed state in every market or model year. Equipment, software and menu labels can vary, so confirm the exact choices shown in your car’s owner’s manual.

Best settings for common daily-driving situations
Stop-and-go commuting
Start in Comfort. Light steering makes repeated low-speed turns less strenuous, softer damping deals with patched asphalt and the smoother throttle is easier to modulate when traffic repeatedly starts and stops. If the engine feels too relaxed after you leave the congested section, Sport can be selected for the open part of the route without making it your permanent setting.

Rough urban streets
Stay in Comfort and avoid selecting +R simply because the road is slow. The adaptive-damper explanation from Honda describes Comfort as allowing fluid to pass through its valves at relatively high volume, creating less resistance and more compliance. +R constricts the valving significantly, producing an extremely firm ride. That distinction matters most where the surface is uneven.
Long motorway trips
Comfort is Honda’s documented choice for prolonged motorway driving. The combination of lighter steering, compliant damping and smooth responses reduces the small physical inputs that become tiring over distance. Engine sound is also less assertive than in the sportier calibrations, which can make conversation easier.
Smooth back roads
Use Sport when the road is legal, dry enough for the available grip and smooth enough that firmer damping is an advantage. Sport gives quicker throttle and rev matching with more steering response while retaining a larger comfort margin than +R. If the surface deteriorates, return to Comfort rather than assuming the most aggressive mode is automatically safer.

Comfort is generally the least intrusive choice because its throttle and rev-match behavior are smoother and its damping is softer. If a passenger prefers a more immediate accelerator but dislikes a firm ride, build an Individual profile with Sport engine response and Comfort suspension, then leave steering and sound at the settings that produce the least fatigue.
How to build and evaluate an Individual profile
- Choose Individual from the drive-mode controls. Open the car’s Individual settings screen using the labels shown in your market’s owner’s manual; Honda can vary menu wording by model year and region.
- Set the ride first. Select Comfort damping if the car will spend most of its time on ordinary streets. Select Sport damping only when the roads are smooth enough to benefit from the added firmness.
- Set steering separately. Comfort steering keeps parking and low-speed maneuvering light. Sport or +R steering adds effort and feedback for drivers who prefer a more deliberate connection.
- Choose engine response. Sport is a useful middle ground for a daily car; +R gives the most immediate response and is usually unnecessary in traffic.
- Choose rev matching. Faster Sport/+R behavior can make repeated performance downshifts more consistent. Smoother Comfort behavior is less conspicuous in normal driving. Turn the function off only if you deliberately prefer to coordinate engine speed yourself and can do so smoothly.
- Set engine sound to match the trip. A quieter setting can reduce fatigue and passenger complaints; a sportier sound is a preference choice, not a substitute for suspension or steering response.
- Test one change at a time. Drive a familiar route, note ride impacts and steering effort, then alter one category. This creates a profile you understand instead of a collection of simultaneous changes whose effects are hard to separate.
There is no requirement to use all 486 possible combinations. A profile that you can predict and select quickly is more useful than a theoretically perfect combination you cannot recall.
How to use +R on a track day
Prepare the car before selecting the mode
+R is a calibration, not a substitute for preparation. Check the condition of the tires, wheels, brakes, fluids and safety equipment before entering the circuit. Use the tire size and wheel specification approved for your exact Civic Type R and market, and observe the tire maker’s weather limitations. Honda’s 2023 press material names the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 as a bespoke tire available to order through Honda dealers for track use; availability, sizing and legality must be verified for your car before purchase.

Select the mode when the car is ready
- Complete your inspection and follow the circuit’s briefing and pit-lane rules.
- Once the car and driver are ready for the performance session, select +R using the vehicle’s drive-mode control.
- Confirm that the display has changed to the track-oriented layout and that the selected settings match your plan.
- Keep stability and traction assistance decisions conservative unless your experience, instruction, owner’s manual and circuit rules support a different choice. The fact that a system can be reduced or adjusted is not a recommendation to do so on a public road.
- Build speed progressively. Learn how the firm damping and heavier steering feel at the circuit’s actual surface and temperature rather than assuming the setting will feel identical in every session.
- After the session, allow the car to cool and inspect it again before driving home. Select a more comfortable mode for the road portion if the car retained the track calibration.
Honda describes +R as track optimal, but “optimal” assumes the surface and purpose match the calibration. A wet, cold or unusually bumpy circuit may require more conservative driving and different assistance choices even when +R remains selected.

Adaptive dampers
Honda explains the mode difference through the damper valves. In Comfort, fluid flows through the valves at relatively high volume, creating less resistance and more compliance. Sport uses more constricted valves, increasing firmness. +R constricts the valving significantly, creating an extremely firm ride intended to support precise cornering.
This explains why mode selection is not merely an engine-response setting. A sharper accelerator cannot compensate for a ride that is too firm for a broken road, and a soft damper calibration may be preferable when maintaining tire contact over rough pavement matters more than minimizing body movement on a smooth track.
Rev Match Control
Rev Match Control automatically raises engine speed to match the lower gear you intend to select. By reducing the speed difference between the engine and drivetrain, it reduces shift shock and allows the driver to concentrate more on steering and braking. Comfort uses a smoother rev-match behavior, while Sport and +R use faster behavior.
Leave rev matching enabled if it makes your downshifts repeatable and stable. Disable it only as a conscious skill choice, not because manual coordination is automatically faster. Whichever setting you use, practice it away from traffic and avoid abrupt inputs that unsettle the car.
Mode memory and returning from +R
Honda documents that the mode selected at shutdown is generally retained at the next start. There is an important exception: if +R was the last mode used, the car returns to the mode that was active before +R. That behavior prevents a track-focused calibration from necessarily becoming the default after a session, but you should still check the display before driving away.

Make the check part of your routine: look at the mode indicator after starting, confirm the steering and damping feel during the first low-speed movements, and select Comfort or your Individual profile before entering public traffic if that is your plan. Do not infer the active setting solely from the previous day’s drive.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using +R on every road
Symptom: a harsh ride, excessive steering effort and a car that feels busy over rough pavement. Correction: use Comfort for damaged surfaces or Sport for smooth roads; reserve +R for a suitable track or exceptionally smooth, legal conditions.
Changing every Individual parameter at once
Symptom: you cannot tell whether the improvement came from throttle, damping, steering or sound. Correction: return to a known baseline and change one category at a time on the same route.
Treating steering weight as extra grip
Symptom: selecting +R because the wheel feels heavier, then driving faster on a surface that cannot support it. Correction: remember that steering effort and feedback change the driver’s information and workload; they do not create additional tire grip.
Assuming the mode decides stability control for you
Symptom: reducing assistance because +R is selected, without instruction or a circuit requirement. Correction: keep assistance decisions separate from drive-mode selection and follow the owner’s manual, your training and venue rules.
Ignoring tires and weather
Symptom: a setting that felt excellent in dry conditions feels nervous in rain or cold temperatures. Correction: adapt speed and assistance to available grip, verify that the tire is legal and appropriate for the weather, and do not treat a track-oriented tire as an all-weather solution.
Forgetting to check the mode after a restart
Symptom: the car feels different from expectation when leaving home or the circuit. Correction: verify the indicator at startup; Honda generally retains the previous mode but returns from +R to the mode active before +R.

- Is the road rough, congested or part of a long journey? Choose Comfort.
- Is the road smooth and you want quicker responses without maximum firmness? Choose Sport.
- Do you want a custom blend for repeated mixed use? Build Individual from a Comfort ride/steering baseline and add Sport response where needed.
- Are you at a prepared circuit with suitable tires, brakes, weather and instruction? Select +R and configure stability assistance only within your competence and the venue’s rules.
- Are conditions changing? Reassess the surface and grip rather than staying loyal to a mode selected earlier.
The most effective Civic Type R setting is the one that gives you the control and information you need without adding unnecessary workload. Comfort is the correct answer for most street miles, Sport is the useful intermediate, Individual is the personalization tool, and +R belongs where the road, car and driver are prepared to use it.
