There is no single half-ton truck that every reliability study identifies as best. Ram 1500 ranks highest in J.D. Power’s 2026 three-year dependability study, while Toyota Tundra ranks highest in iSeeCars’ 2026 high-mileage analysis. Those are different questions, so the sensible choice depends on whether you are buying new or used, which model year and engine you want, and how you define long-term reliability.

This guide compares the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 and Toyota Tundra using the available 2026 evidence, then shows how to verify a specific truck’s history, engine configuration and recall status before you buy.

What “reliable” means for a half-ton truck

Half-ton is the common U.S. description for full-size light-duty pickups. It is a class label, not a payload promise: actual payload and towing ratings vary by cab, bed, axle ratio, engine, drivetrain and equipment. Reliability comparisons have a similar qualification problem. A study that measures trouble reported by owners after three years is not measuring the same thing as a study that estimates which vehicles reach very high mileage.

Three-year dependability

J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study asks owners about problems after roughly three years of ownership. In its Large Light Duty Pickup segment, Ram 1500 ranks highest, Chevrolet Silverado follows, and Ford F-150 and GMC Sierra tie in the listed top group. J.D. Power cautions that the numerical differences may not be statistically significant. The result is useful for near-term ownership experience, but it is not a direct prediction of what a truck will be like after 15 years.

High-mileage durability

iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis gives Toyota Tundra an 8.0/10 rating, followed by GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 at 7.5, Ram 1500 at 7.3 and Ford F-150 at 7.2. iSeeCars says its rating considers useful lifespan and the likelihood of reaching a high-mileage threshold, drawing on a broader analysis of more than 312 million vehicles. These are the publisher’s ratings, not percentages showing a truck’s probability of avoiding failure.

Unexpected repairs in a used-truck cohort

CARFAX’s 2026 pickup ranking focuses on unexpected-repair likelihood using U.S. maintenance records for model years 2019–2023. It reports a 10.5% average repair likelihood for full-size trucks in that cohort and also considers how many vehicles remain on the road over long periods. That makes the result most relevant to someone shopping for a used truck, not a mature verdict on a brand-new model.

Configuration-level trouble areas

Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists full-size-pickup configurations by engine rather than treating every version of a nameplate as identical. Among the configurations shown, it records lower reliability in its listed pros and cons for the Ram 1500 3.0T, Ford F-150 2.7T, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3L and 3.0D, GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L and 3.0D, Toyota Tundra 3.4T and Ford F-150 Hybrid. This is a configuration-level assessment; it should not be converted into a universal brand ranking.

How the five trucks compare in the 2026 evidence

Truck J.D. Power 2026 VDS iSeeCars 2026 high-mileage rating What the evidence does—and does not—tell you
Ram 1500 Highest in Large Light Duty Pickup 7.3/10 Strongest three-year dependability result in J.D. Power; the iSeeCars score is below Tundra, Silverado and Sierra.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Follows Ram in the listed segment order 7.5/10 Near the top in both cited comparisons; engine and model year still matter.
Ford F-150 Tied with GMC Sierra in the listed top group 7.2/10 Its iSeeCars score is lowest of these five; Consumer Reports lists lower reliability for the 2.7T and Hybrid configurations shown.
GMC Sierra 1500 Tied with Ford F-150 in the listed top group 7.5/10 Matches Silverado’s iSeeCars rating; Consumer Reports flags the listed 5.3L and 3.0D configurations.
Toyota Tundra Not identified as the J.D. Power segment leader 8.0/10 Highest iSeeCars high-mileage rating; certain 2022–2023 trucks have a major recall that must be checked by VIN.

Do not average these columns into one score. J.D. Power measures owner-reported problems at about three years, iSeeCars estimates high-mileage durability, CARFAX examines unexpected repairs in a 2019–2023 maintenance-record cohort, and Consumer Reports separates engines. Their leaders differ because their questions and data differ.

Which truck fits your reliability goal?

Best for the strongest recent dependability result

Choose the Ram 1500 if your priority is the J.D. Power 2026 result for problems reported after roughly three years. That ranking is the clearest current evidence in this group for near-term owner-reported dependability. It does not establish that every Ram engine or a high-mileage used example will outperform the alternatives.

Best high-mileage signal

The Toyota Tundra has the strongest iSeeCars 2026 high-mileage rating at 8.0/10. Treat that as evidence of useful lifespan and high-mileage representation in iSeeCars’ analysis, not as a guarantee. A 2022 or 2023 Tundra also requires a VIN-specific check for recall 24V-381/24TA07 before purchase.

Best two-source showing among the Chevrolet and GMC choices

Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 each score 7.5/10 in iSeeCars’ analysis, and Silverado follows Ram in J.D. Power’s listed order while Sierra ties with F-150 in the listed top group. The two trucks share substantial mechanical architecture, but you still need the exact engine, model year and service history for the individual vehicle.

When an F-150 still makes sense

The F-150 remains a reasonable candidate when its configuration, condition, price and records are better than the alternatives. Its iSeeCars rating is 7.2/10, and Consumer Reports lists lower reliability for the 2.7T and Hybrid configurations shown. Those findings do not describe every F-150 engine, so inspect the exact powertrain rather than rejecting the entire model line.

Why model year and engine can outweigh the badge

Reliability is often discussed by model name, but the evidence here repeatedly points to configuration. A turbocharged gasoline engine, diesel, hybrid system and naturally aspirated gasoline engine have different components, software, cooling demands and maintenance schedules. A redesign can also introduce new parts before a long ownership record exists.

Match the study to the exact truck

  • Record the model year, cab, bed length, drivetrain and engine code from the vehicle identification number and window sticker.
  • Check whether the source’s result covers that engine or only another configuration.
  • For a hybrid or diesel, evaluate the additional systems separately rather than assuming the gasoline version’s record applies.
  • Compare service intervals and documented repairs for the exact powertrain.

Consumer Reports’ separate entries illustrate why this matters: its lower-reliability notes apply to named configurations such as Ram 1500 3.0T or Tundra 3.4T, not automatically to every engine offered under those model names.

New truck versus used truck: use different evidence

If you are buying new

A new model may not have enough years in service to support a mature long-term conclusion. Use current dependability information as an early signal, then examine warranty terms, recall status and the complexity of the chosen powertrain. A first-year redesign deserves more caution than a powertrain with a long, documented service history, even when both carry the same badge.

If you are buying used

Used-truck shoppers can evaluate evidence that does not exist for a new vehicle: maintenance records, repair invoices, inspection findings and the way the previous owner used the truck. CARFAX’s 2019–2023 cohort is therefore more directly relevant to a used purchase than to a 2026 truck. It still describes a population, not the condition of a particular VIN.

Do not confuse age with mileage

A low-mileage truck used for short trips, heavy towing or long periods of neglect can be a worse purchase than a higher-mileage truck with consistent fluid changes and documented repairs. Look for the operating pattern and maintenance evidence, not just the odometer.

How to check a used half-ton before buying

  1. Identify the exact configuration. Write down the VIN, model year, engine, transmission, drive system, cab and bed. Verify that the seller’s description matches the vehicle and its paperwork.
  2. Review maintenance and repair records. Look for dated invoices, scheduled fluid services, tire rotations, brake work, cooling-system repairs and any engine or transmission replacement. A vehicle-history report can help locate gaps, but it does not certify mechanical condition.
  3. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA states that unrepaired recalls appear in its VIN search. Confirm that every open campaign has a completed remedy, and ask for the repair order when the seller says a recall was fixed.
  4. Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified technician scan for diagnostic trouble codes, inspect leaks and corrosion, check suspension and steering components, evaluate the frame, and road-test the truck cold and fully warmed. A scan tool can reveal stored codes; it cannot prove long-term reliability.
  5. Verify use and ownership history. Ask whether the truck towed, hauled commercially, went off-road, idled for long periods or was modified. Confirm the number of owners and whether service was performed at a dealership or independent shop.
  6. Price unresolved work before committing. Treat missing records, warning lights, uneven tire wear, fluid contamination or a seller who refuses an inspection as decision risks. Do not assume a low purchase price compensates for unknown repairs.

The 2022–2023 Tundra recall buyers must understand

Toyota’s NHTSA-filed remedy notice for recall 24V-381, Toyota campaign 24TA07, covers certain 2022–2023 Tundras. The notice says machining debris may not have been cleared from the engine during production. Possible consequences include knocking, rough running, a no-start condition or loss of motive power. The stated remedy is replacement of the engine assembly by a dealer at no charge.

The notice identifies an approximate population of 98,600 vehicles. That is the number of potentially covered trucks in the notice, not a failure rate and not proof that every 2022–2023 Tundra is affected. Coverage depends on the individual vehicle’s VIN. Check the VIN, confirm whether the remedy was completed and obtain documentation before treating the truck as ready to buy.

A completed recall does not erase the need for a normal inspection. It establishes that the specified remedy was performed; it does not describe every other component’s condition.

How to interpret conflicting reliability rankings

Ask what was counted

Owner-reported problems, repair records, survival to high mileage and subscriber surveys can all produce a reliability ranking, but they count different events. A truck can perform well in one measure and poorly in another without the data being contradictory.

Ask when the vehicles were measured

J.D. Power’s approximately three-year ownership window favors recent ownership experience. iSeeCars’ high-mileage analysis looks further into vehicle lifespan. CARFAX’s 2019–2023 cohort is especially relevant to used trucks from those years. A current model may have too little long-term history to compare directly with an older generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether the result is statistically meaningful

J.D. Power explicitly cautions that numerical ranking differences may not be statistically significant. A one-place difference should not outweigh a documented service history, a clean inspection and a completed recall.

Ask whether the number is a probability

An iSeeCars score such as 8.0/10 is a publisher rating, not an 80% chance of reaching a particular mileage. CARFAX’s 10.5% figure is the average unexpected-repair likelihood it reports for the specified 2019–2023 full-size-truck cohort and measure; it is not the chance that your truck will need a repair.

A practical shortlist for different buyers

Your priority Shortlist logic Required verification
Fewest reported problems in the first several years Start with Ram 1500 based on J.D. Power’s 2026 segment result. Confirm engine, model year and service history; do not generalize the segment result to every powertrain.
Evidence associated with high mileage Start with Tundra based on iSeeCars’ 8.0/10 rating. Check VIN for 24V-381/24TA07 on applicable 2022–2023 trucks and verify remedy completion.
Used 2019–2023 truck Use the CARFAX cohort as one population-level reference, then compare actual records. Obtain maintenance documentation and an independent inspection.
Chevrolet or GMC preference Silverado and Sierra each rate 7.5/10 in iSeeCars. Check the exact 5.3L, 3.0D or other engine; Consumer Reports’ notes are configuration-specific.
F-150 preference Evaluate the individual truck rather than the badge; iSeeCars rates it 7.2/10. Pay particular attention to the 2.7T and Hybrid configurations flagged by Consumer Reports, plus records and VIN recalls.

Reliability checklist before signing

  • Have you written down the exact model year and engine rather than only the brand?
  • Does the evidence you are using measure three-year dependability, high-mileage survival or unexpected repairs?
  • Are the truck’s maintenance records complete enough to show how it was operated and serviced?
  • Has the VIN been checked for open recalls, and do you have proof of completed remedies?
  • Has an independent technician inspected the frame, powertrain, suspension, electronics and underbody?
  • Have you priced known or likely repairs instead of relying on a reputation score?
  • Are you treating publisher ratings as comparative signals rather than failure probabilities?

Verdict

For a three-year dependability measure, the 2026 J.D. Power result puts Ram 1500 first among these half-ton trucks. For a high-mileage measure, iSeeCars puts Toyota Tundra first at 8.0/10. Neither result settles the question for every buyer. The most reliable purchase is the specific truck with the best-matched engine, documented maintenance, completed recalls and sound inspection. For any used half-ton—and especially an applicable 2022–2023 Tundra—VIN-level verification matters more than a generic model ranking.
