1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a U.S. shopper comparing non-hybrid compact SUVs, the 2025 Toyota RAV4 LE FWD and Honda CR-V LX 2WD are the clearest head-to-head starting points: Toyota lists the RAV4 at a lower starting MSRP and a slightly higher highway estimate, while the CR-V has the higher city estimate and more listed cargo space. The 2025 Hyundai Tucson FWD is another option, but the available figures do not support a full three-way comparison of price and equipment. These are conditional picks based on published specifications, not a tested overall ranking.
How to choose among these FWD SUVs
Front-wheel drive can be a sensible choice if you primarily drive on paved roads and do not regularly need the added traction of all-wheel drive. It does not make a vehicle equivalent to an AWD model in every slippery or rough-road situation. Consider your local winter conditions and routes, and compare the exact drivetrain and trim on the vehicle you plan to buy.
The figures below concern U.S.-market, non-hybrid compact SUV examples for model years 2024 and 2025. The supplied specifications are for 2025 trims; they do not establish model-year-specific winners across both years or an exhaustive list of FWD SUVs. If you are shopping a 2024, check that vehicle’s own window sticker and equipment rather than assuming the 2025 figures apply.
2025 FWD compact SUV comparison
| Vehicle and trim | Starting MSRP | EPA estimate, city/highway/combined | Listed cargo volume | What the figures suggest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Toyota RAV4 LE FWD | $28,850, Toyota-listed starting MSRP | 27/35/30 mpg | 37.6 cu ft | Lower listed starting MSRP of the two directly comparable models and the higher highway estimate |
| 2025 Honda CR-V LX 2WD | $30,100, as listed on Toyota’s comparison page | 28/34/30 mpg | 39.3 cu ft | Higher city estimate and more listed cargo volume than the RAV4 |
| 2025 Hyundai Tucson FWD | Not stated in the cited 2025 overview; check the exact trim and current listing | 25/33/28 mpg | Not stated in the cited 2025 overview | A third FWD option, but the cited figures do not support a like-for-like price and equipment comparison |
Toyota’s published 2025 comparison supplies the RAV4 and CR-V figures above, including the CR-V price and cargo figure; the CR-V figures should not be mistaken for a Honda-published comparison. Hyundai’s overview supplies the Tucson fuel-economy estimates. MSRP is not a dealer quote or transaction price. EPA figures are estimates, and actual fuel use varies with driving conditions, configuration, and individual use. Toyota’s 2025 RAV4 comparison and Hyundai’s Tucson overview.

Best fit by priority
Choose the RAV4 to prioritize listed base price or highway fuel economy
The 2025 RAV4 LE FWD has a Toyota-listed starting MSRP of $28,850 and EPA estimates of 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. Toyota also lists 203 horsepower, 184 lb-ft of torque, 37.6 cu ft of cargo space, and a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 lb for this trim. Check the exact vehicle configuration and current price before deciding.
Look closely at the CR-V if city fuel economy or cargo volume matters
Toyota’s comparison lists the 2025 CR-V LX 2WD at a $30,100 starting MSRP, with EPA estimates of 28 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 combined. It lists 39.3 cu ft of cargo space, 190 horsepower, 179 lb-ft of torque, and a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 lb. Honda’s official specification guide reports 7.8 inches of unladen ground clearance for 2WD CR-V trims. Cargo-volume comparisons can depend on measurement method, so verify that the figures you compare use compatible methods. Honda’s 2025 CR-V specifications.

Consider the Tucson as another FWD option, then verify trim details
Hyundai USA lists EPA estimates of 25 mpg city, 33 highway, and 28 combined for the 2025 Tucson FWD. The cited overview does not establish a comparable starting MSRP or cargo figure, so compare the exact Tucson trim’s price, equipment, and space with the RAV4 and CR-V listings you are considering.
Does front-wheel drive provide enough traction?
FWD may meet the needs of drivers whose typical trips are on maintained roads and who do not routinely encounter deep snow, steep slippery roads, or other conditions where AWD traction may be useful. Neither the published fuel-economy and cargo figures nor the cited trim specifications establish how these vehicles perform in a particular winter climate. Think about the route and weather you actually face, appropriate tires, and whether an AWD version is available and worth its cost. Do not treat ground clearance as a substitute for traction.

What these specifications do not settle
The published figures are useful for narrowing a shortlist, but they do not show which vehicle is best for every buyer. The evidence here does not provide consistent, comparable results across the full field for safety ratings, reliability, comfort, visibility, controls, or real transaction prices. It also does not establish a universal winner for 2024 and 2025. Before buying, compare the exact model year, trim, and drivetrain, and consult current independent crash-test and reliability information alongside a local test drive and dealer quote.

A separate Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press concerns the 2025 Tucson Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, not the FWD non-hybrid trims above. In that hybrid comparison, it reports EPA combined estimates of 39 mpg for the RAV4 Hybrid (37 for Woodland) and 38 mpg for the Tucson Hybrid Blue (35 for other Tucson Hybrid trims). Edmunds’ mixed-driving route returned 35 mpg for the RAV4 Hybrid and 34 mpg for the Tucson Hybrid; those are results from that publication’s test, not typical owner outcomes. It reports 219 hp for the RAV4 Hybrid and 231 hp for the Tucson Hybrid, and describes the Tucson Hybrid as having more cargo space, 38.7 versus 37.6 cu ft. Its preferences for fuel economy, technology, and comfort apply to that hybrid comparison only, not to the non-hybrid FWD vehicles in this shortlist. Associated Press comparison of the 2025 hybrids.
