For Japan in 2024, the most notable newly announced electric-drive vehicles covered three very different jobs: Honda’s compact commercial N-VAN e:, Honda’s hydrogen-and-plug-in CR-V e:FCEV, and Nissan’s performance-focused Ariya NISMO. They are not direct alternatives. One prioritizes cargo access, one combines hydrogen refuelling with a small battery-only range, and one adds a sporting grade to an existing electric crossover.
This is a historical preview of Japan-market announcements made for 2024, not a current buying guide. Availability, pricing and inventory may have changed since those announcements.
Which Japanese EVs were new or expected in Japan during 2024?
| Model | 2024 Japan status | Drive system and role | Key published information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda N-VAN e: | Sales planned from October 10, 2024 | Battery-electric commercial mini-EV, also intended for personal use | 245 km (152 miles) WLTC range; approximately 4.5 hours at 6.0 kW AC or 30 minutes at 50 kW fast charging |
| Honda CR-V e:FCEV | Japan lease launch announced for July 19, 2024 | Hydrogen fuel-cell SUV with plug-in battery charging | Approximately 621 km per hydrogen fill and approximately 61 km of battery-electric driving |
| Nissan Ariya NISMO | Initial Japan sales planned from June 2024 | Performance version of the Ariya electric crossover | Announced as a sporting model; Nissan separately described changes to availability of other Ariya grades |
The figures and dates above come from Honda and Nissan’s 2024 announcements. The range numbers use different measurement concepts, so they should not be treated as a single comparable battery-EV test.
Honda N-VAN e: targets practical small-vehicle work
Honda said the N-VAN e: would go on sale in Japan on October 10, 2024. It adapts the N-VAN commercial mini-vehicle format to battery power, with packaging aimed at carrying goods and equipment. Honda also presented it for personal use, making it relevant to drivers who need a compact vehicle that can switch between everyday transport and work duties.

Cargo access is the main reason to watch it
The N-VAN e:’s appeal is less about headline performance than about the boxy, cargo-oriented layout and easy loading associated with the N-VAN concept. That makes its usefulness highly dependent on the buyer’s daily route, payload and charging access rather than on conventional passenger-car priorities.
Honda’s stated range and charging times
- Range: 245 km (152 miles) on the WLTC cycle, according to Honda.
- AC charging: approximately 4.5 hours using a 6.0 kW connection.
- DC fast charging: approximately 30 minutes using a 50 kW charger.
These are Honda’s published figures. Real-world distance and charging time vary with temperature, load, driving speed, battery state and charger conditions.

Honda CR-V e:FCEV combines hydrogen with plug-in charging
The CR-V e:FCEV is an electric-drive SUV that generates electricity from hydrogen in a fuel-cell system while also carrying a battery that can be charged from the grid. Honda announced the Japan launch for July 19, 2024, with leasing offered to municipalities, companies and general customers.
Its two range figures describe two different energy sources
- Hydrogen operation: approximately 621 km per hydrogen fill, as stated by Honda.
- Battery-electric operation: approximately 61 km of driving from the plug-in battery, as stated by Honda.
The 621 km figure is not battery-only range. It refers to travel using a hydrogen fill, while the 61 km figure describes the separate plug-in electric-driving capability. That distinction matters when comparing the vehicle with a conventional battery-electric car.

Availability was structured as a lease launch
Honda’s announcement specified leasing rather than a conventional open-ended retail launch. That arrangement makes local hydrogen-station access, lease eligibility and operating patterns central to whether the CR-V e:FCEV is practical. Honda said the fuel-cell system was developed with GM; the vehicle was produced in Ohio for the U.S. and Japan, despite its Japan-market launch.
Nissan Ariya NISMO brings a performance focus
Nissan announced initial Japan sales of the Ariya NISMO from June 2024. It is a performance version of the Ariya electric crossover, intended for buyers who want sharper driving character rather than a new body style or a different energy source.

Do not confuse the NISMO launch with other Ariya grade changes
Nissan’s announcement also mentioned renewed orders for an Ariya two-wheel-drive grade and launches of other grades. Those availability updates are separate from the NISMO performance model. The announcement record supports the model’s positioning and timing, but it does not establish a complete Japan-market price, acceleration or range comparison with every ordinary Ariya grade.

Choose by operating mission, not by badge
- Frequent cargo work: the N-VAN e: is the purpose-built choice, provided its WLTC range and charging schedule fit the route.
- Hydrogen access and long trips: the CR-V e:FCEV depends on available hydrogen stations and its lease terms, while its plug-in battery covers shorter electric journeys.
- Sportier crossover driving: the Ariya NISMO is the performance-oriented option among these announcements, but detailed comparative performance figures were not part of the cited release.
They therefore represent different decisions: compact commercial practicality, a hydrogen infrastructure experiment, and a higher-performance version of an established battery-electric crossover.

What Honda’s 0 Series meant for the years after 2024
Honda’s 2024 business briefing placed its global 0 Series EV launches in 2026, with seven models planned globally by 2030. This was a corporate strategy target, not a 2024 production launch or a promise of specific Japan-market trim levels. It provides context for Honda’s longer-term electric lineup, while the N-VAN e: and CR-V e:FCEV were the Honda vehicles in this preview with concrete 2024 Japan-market launch announcements.
Quick Recap
Important limits on this 2024 preview
- The scope is Japan-market announcements, not every Japanese brand’s worldwide electrified launch.
- “EV” is used broadly here to include the CR-V e:FCEV’s electric-drive fuel-cell system; it is not a battery-only vehicle.
- The cited announcements do not establish current prices, inventory, dealer eligibility or availability outside Japan.
- The three models are not like-for-like substitutes, and their published range figures use different energy systems and test descriptions.
