The right choice is the part listed for your exact year, make, model, engine, and drivetrain, with emissions approval that applies to both that part number and your jurisdiction.
What does “front exhaust system” mean?
Before comparing products, identify which component you actually need. Product names vary by vehicle and manufacturer; a header, front pipe, and downpipe are not interchangeable just because each sits upstream in the exhaust system.
- Header or exhaust manifold: Collects exhaust gases from the engine’s cylinders. Some aftermarket headers replace the factory manifold.
- Front pipe: A vehicle-specific section of exhaust tubing identified as a front pipe by its manufacturer. Its location and relationship to catalysts and other pipes depend on the vehicle.
- Downpipe: A pipe associated with a turbocharged engine’s exhaust outlet. Its fitment and emissions equipment are application-specific.
For example, CARB’s order for a specific Flowmaster shorty header says, “The Exhaust Header replaces the stock exhaust manifold.” HKS lists a BRZ front pipe, while Unitronic lists a downpipe for specified MQB 2.0 TSI front-wheel-drive applications. Those labels describe different parts and do not establish that one can replace another.
Examples of vehicle-specific options
These examples illustrate how narrowly product fitment and claims should be read. They are not a like-for-like performance ranking: the products serve different vehicles and component locations.

| Product type and example | Listed application | Construction or configuration details | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shorty header: Flowmaster part 814321 | Selected 2009–2016 Chrysler and Dodge vehicles with naturally aspirated 5.7L engines, as listed in CARB Executive Order D-698-19 | CARB describes a 16-gauge stainless-steel header; the applicable oxygen sensor remains in the stock location for the approved configuration. | The order covers only the listed part and vehicle combinations. It says no other major modifications or engine tuning are required for that configuration; do not transfer that detail to other headers. Read CARB Executive Order D-698-19. |
| Front pipe: HKS BRZ product | BRZ application chart on the HKS product page | Consult the product chart for the applicable vehicle configuration. | The BRZ listing does not establish fitment for other vehicles. HKS also describes lower exhaust resistance and performance benefits for a particular Civic Type R front pipe; these are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative results. View HKS front-pipe information. |
| Downpipe: Unitronic 2.0 TSI MQB EA888.3 FWD | Specified MQB EA888.3 2.0 TSI front-wheel-drive applications | Marketed as a direct-bolt-on performance downpipe; confirm the current fitment chart and emissions configuration. | Unitronic describes reduced restriction and intended turbo-lag and exhaust-note effects. These are product claims, not guaranteed outcomes or independently established gains. Check Unitronic’s product listing. |
| Front pipe: DC Sports 3-inch T-304 stainless steel | Listed for 2022–2026 Honda Civic Si and Acura Integra 1.5T applications | DC Sports says it can be used with the factory downpipe and cat-back. | Verify the current exact fitment and local emissions rules before relying on the listing. Check DC Sports’ application information. |
How to choose the right part for your car
- Identify the component. Determine whether you need a manifold-replacing header, a front pipe, or a turbo downpipe. Check the vehicle’s parts information or ask a qualified exhaust shop if the name is unclear.
- Match the complete vehicle configuration. Verify year, make, model, engine, and drivetrain against the manufacturer’s current fitment listing. A listing for one engine or drivetrain does not prove fitment for another version of the same model.
- Check catalysts and oxygen sensors. Confirm what the product retains, replaces, or relocates, and whether the factory downpipe or cat-back remains compatible. A change to sensor placement or catalyst arrangement may affect warning lights, diagnostics, or emissions compliance.
- Verify approval by part number and application. Look for an emissions approval that covers the exact product and vehicle combination in your jurisdiction. Do not treat an approval for a similar-looking part or another vehicle as transferable.
- Read installation and tuning requirements. Use instructions for that exact product. Do not assume another manufacturer’s statement about installation or tuning applies to the part you are considering.
- Separate measured results from sales claims. Look for independent power or noise measurements on the same vehicle configuration and with comparable supporting modifications. A manufacturer’s stated design intention is not a guaranteed result.
Will an aftermarket header or front pipe pass emissions testing?
That depends on the exact part, vehicle configuration, and rules where the car is registered or tested. CARB Executive Order D-698-19 is limited to the listed Flowmaster part and vehicle combinations. It also states that changes that adversely affect pollution-control performance invalidate the order and that the header may not be marketed for unlisted applications without prior approval. A label such as “CARB legal” is therefore not enough on its own: check the order and confirm your exact part number and application.
CARB Executive Order D-455-21 provides a separate, tightly bounded example. It reports results for a Comptech Performance Header System installed on a 2002 Acura RSX Type-S. The order says the system met applicable standards in the named tests and did not affect OBD-II monitoring. Its figures are emissions-test results, not horsepower gains, and do not establish results for other cars or headers.

Do you need to replace the front pipe when installing headers?
Not automatically. Whether a front pipe must also be changed depends on the vehicle’s exhaust layout, the header’s outlet and connections, and the product maker’s fitment and installation instructions. Ask whether the specific header is designed to connect to the factory front pipe, whether the existing catalysts and sensors remain in the required locations, and whether an additional pipe is required for that exact setup. Do not infer compatibility from a discussion about a different car or from the part names alone.

- SQUARE-BODY FITMENT: Fits 1973–1987 Chevrolet/GMC pickups and 1973–1991 full-size square-body Blazer, Jimmy, and Suburban models with compatible SBC V8 engines. Does not fit 1988–1991 new-body-style OBS pickups.
- SMALL BLOCK CHEVY ENGINES: Compatible with 305 / 5.0L, 350 / 5.7L, and 400 V8 engines, including carbureted and TBI applications. Also fits traditional 283, 307, and 327 small blocks installed in supported truck and SUV chassis.
- POLISHED STAINLESS KIT: Long tube exhaust headers with a polished stainless steel finish. Includes standard steel/fiber header gaskets, standard collector gaskets, and mounting hardware for compatible Chevy and GMC truck exhaust builds.
- REDESIGNED HEAD FLANGES: Updated cylinder-head mounting flanges have been checked for proper header-to-head bolt-hole alignment. The revised flange design aligns the mounting holes with compatible small block Chevy cylinder heads.
- INSTALLATION CLEARANCE: Some 4x4 models may need minor leaf spring shackle bolt modifications. Certain models may need minor driver-side engine mount bracket clearance work. Watch the listing installation video for application details.
Can a front exhaust part add power?
A less restrictive design may be intended to improve exhaust flow, but the reviewed product information does not support a general horsepower or torque figure for “front exhaust systems.” Unitronic describes flow and turbo-lag effects for its specified downpipe; HKS describes performance benefits for a particular Civic Type R front pipe. Those are manufacturer statements tied to specific applications, not independent tests or promises for other setups. No fair cross-brand comparison is established across these different component types and vehicles.
