What was the Bentley Dominator?
The Dominator was reportedly a small-run, bespoke Bentley SUV created for Brunei—not a model sold through Bentley dealers to ordinary customers. Specialist model-history site RR Silver Spirit reports that six were commissioned in 1996. Bentley’s published company history does not provide an account of the Dominator, so those details should be treated as specialist reporting rather than Bentley-confirmed production history.
RR Silver Spirit’s Dominator record identifies a run of six chassis numbers, from SCBTH98C5TCH00422 through SCBTH98C3TCH00427. The site describes the Range Rover as the donor platform, names Design Research Associates Limited as designer, and credits Rig Design Services (RDS) of Southam with building the vehicles. These specific provenance and construction details have not been independently confirmed by a Bentley primary source in the available record.
Was it really Bentley’s first SUV?
That depends on what “first” means. The Dominator is reported as an earlier bespoke SUV commission. Bentley’s official wording refers to the Bentayga as its “first-ever SUV,” launched in 2015. The company’s company facts page says: “The company’s first-ever SUV was launched in 2015, the luxurious, go-anywhere Bentayga.” Bentley’s heritage page also describes the Bentayga as its first SUV.

Those statements can be reconciled without dismissing either account: the Dominator is reported as a one-off-style private commission in a tiny run, while the Bentayga is Bentley’s official modern SUV milestone and publicly documented model. Calling the Dominator a regular production Bentley SUV would overstate what is established; saying it never existed would ignore specialist reporting.

What is known about its specifications?
Very little is established in the cited Dominator record. RR Silver Spirit says the vehicle’s specifications and technical details were not revealed. That means an engine, transmission, power output, performance figure or other mechanical specification cannot be stated reliably from this evidence. Online repetition of an unverified specification would not make it confirmed.

A useful further-reading source is the automotive-history journal PDF Rolls-Royce and Bentley Coachbuilt Specials in the Modern Era, which identifies itself as a history of coachbuilt specials; it is broader than the Dominator alone.
