For a gasoline Ford Fusion, 2009 is the strongest model year in the available year-by-year reported-failure ranking, while 2010 is the weakest. That makes 2009 a reasonable place to start—not a guarantee of reliability. The same ranking puts it at #33 of 52 midsize cars, so the condition and history of the individual car matter more than the year alone.
What are the best model years for a Ford Fusion?
For gasoline-powered Fusions, VehicleReliability.com’s year-level comparison identifies 2009 as the best-ranked year: #33 of 52 midsize passenger cars sold in that model year. Its ranking places 2010 last among the Fusion years compared, at #43 of 46 midsize cars. These are relative rankings, not controlled mechanical tests or predictions about a particular used car. The analysis is based on NHTSA owner and repair-shop failure reports weighted against U.S. sales volumes, so reporting patterns can affect the results. See the Fusion year-by-year reliability analysis.
The practical takeaway: shortlist a well-maintained 2009, but don’t buy one on its model year alone. Inspect any Fusion carefully, and investigate a 2010 especially thoroughly. The source scores gasoline models; it treats Fusion Hybrid separately, so this ranking does not establish the best Hybrid or Energi year.
Which Ford Fusion years deserve extra scrutiny?
2010: the weakest year in this ranking
The reported-failure ranking places 2010 at #43 of 46 midsize cars. It is also a redesign year, which is a reason to inspect rather than proof that every 2010 is unreliable. A NHTSA power-steering investigation involved nearly 263,000 2010 model-year Fusions. The Associated Press reported allegations of 59 crashes and 13 injuries in the broader investigation record; those were allegations, not confirmed findings of a safety-related defect. NHTSA closed its seven-year investigation without seeking further recalls and did not find a safety-related defect trend, according to AP. Earlier recall action covered some 2011–2013 vehicles. Check the specific car’s recall status rather than treating the investigation history as a diagnosis. AP’s report on the power-steering investigation.

2006 and 2013: redesign years, not automatic rejects
Consumer Reports’ Fusion timeline groups the model into 2006–2009, 2010–2012, and 2013–2020 generations, with redesigns in 2006, 2010, and 2013. Its guidance is that more extensive or complicated redesigns can bring greater reliability risk. That is a reason to pay close attention to maintenance and inspection on those years—not evidence that every car from a redesign year is a poor choice. The timeline does not provide a year-by-year reliability score. Consumer Reports’ Ford Fusion page.
2013–2018: check for the brake-hose field action
Ford filed a 2023 chronology concerning front brake jounce hoses on 2013–2018 Fusion and MKZ vehicles. The filing describes a possible symptom of longer brake-pedal travel and a red brake warning light, and gives an exception for the 2.0L DOHC Hybrid engine. It is a manufacturer document about the action’s scope, not a way to determine whether a particular car is affected or repaired. Ask the seller for documentation and check the VIN for open recalls. Ford’s 2023 chronology filed with NHTSA.

2018–2020: pay attention to powertrain history
VehicleReliability.com reports more frequent-than-segment-average powertrain reports for 2018–2020 Fusion model years. The source scores Fusion reliability across 12 systems, but those model-line reports cannot tell you the condition of an individual vehicle. For a specific car, review service records and have its powertrain inspected.
How to evaluate the Fusion you’re considering
- Confirm the powertrain. Establish whether the car is gasoline, Hybrid, or Energi. The best-year ranking above applies to gasoline models, not the separately scored Hybrid or Energi variants.
- Check the VIN for unrepaired recalls. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup before purchase. A VIN or license-plate search identifies unrepaired recalls for that specific vehicle; a year/make/model search shows broader recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. NHTSA says: “When searching by license plate or VIN, you’ll learn if a specific vehicle needs to be repaired as part of a recall.”
- Ask for maintenance and repair records. Look for evidence of routine service and completed recall work. Records help clarify how the particular car was maintained; a model-year ranking cannot substitute for them.
- Arrange a professional pre-purchase inspection. Ask the mechanic to assess the powertrain, brakes, steering, warning indicators, and overall condition. This is especially useful for a redesign year or a car with incomplete records.
- Compare mileage and condition, not just year. A well-documented car in good condition may be a better candidate than a nominally higher-ranked year with neglected maintenance or unresolved problems. Weigh those factors alongside the asking price; the cited sources do not establish a current price or a combined value winner.
An OBD-II reader may reveal diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot assess overall mechanical condition or confirm recall repairs. Treat it as a limited check, not a replacement for an inspection or VIN lookup.

What the rankings can—and can’t—tell you
The year-level comparison is useful for prioritizing your search: among gasoline Fusions, it makes 2009 the strongest starting point and 2010 the year to scrutinize most. It does not establish that a 2009 will be trouble-free, that every 2010 is defective, or which Hybrid or Energi model year is best. NHTSA complaints and repair-shop reports reflect reported failures rather than a controlled test, and an individual car’s mileage, service, repairs, and present condition can change the buying decision. Check the VIN close to purchase because recall completion is specific to the vehicle and can change.
