That is a useful starting point, not proof that those years have the lowest failure rates: the comparison does not adjust for how many Escapes were sold, and NHTSA complaints are a safety-trend signal rather than a controlled reliability survey. Check the specific vehicle’s VIN, maintenance history, configuration, and condition before deciding.
What are the best Ford Escape years for reliability?
In the comparison published by ModelYears.com and updated October 4, 2026, the 2018, 2019, and 2023 Escape each had fewer NHTSA complaints filed during its first three model years than that source’s typical Escape-year benchmark. The method counts complaints filed by the end of model year Y+2 and excludes years without a complete three-year window.
Use those years as a shortlist, not a universal ranking. The comparison does not adjust for the number of vehicles sold, and complaint totals can be influenced by how many vehicles are on the road, how long owners have had them, reporting behavior, and individual circumstances. NHTSA says complaints are one input among others used to identify potential safety issues and decide whether to investigate a defect trend; they are not a measured failure rate. See NHTSA’s explanation of its datasets and APIs.
The available evidence does not establish one most-reliable Escape across all generations, engines, trims, hybrid systems, and maintenance histories. A defensible all-years winner would require comparable long-term reliability or repair-claim data, adjustment for vehicle exposure, and analysis by powertrain and configuration.

Which Ford Escape years should I avoid?
The comparison flags 2011 and 2013 as years to avoid, but its complaint-count approach has the same limits as its shortlist: it is not an exposure-adjusted failure rate and does not prove that every vehicle from either year is unreliable. Treat the result as a prompt for closer scrutiny, not a substitute for evaluating the individual Escape.
For any model year, prioritize documented maintenance, repair quality, accident or flood history, mileage, inspection findings, exact powertrain, and open or completed recalls and service campaigns. A well-maintained vehicle with a clean inspection may be a better candidate than a neglected example of a year with a lower complaint count.

Is the 2018 Ford Escape reliable?
The 2018 Escape is one of the stronger candidates in the cited first-three-years complaint comparison. That makes it worth considering, but the ranking alone cannot predict how a particular 2018 will perform or establish reliability for every engine, trim, or drivetrain.
For a specific vehicle, review its service and repair records, verify its VIN for unrepaired recalls, and have an independent mechanic inspect its condition and repair history. Compare its mileage and configuration with other candidates rather than buying on the year’s ranking alone.
Are Ford Escape hybrids reliable?
There is not enough evidence here to give Ford Escape hybrids a separate reliability rating against gas-only models. A notable safety campaign does make VIN-specific verification especially important for some recent hybrid and plug-in hybrid Escapes.
2020–2023 2.5-liter hybrid and plug-in hybrid models
In a June 6, 2023 alert, NHTSA described a recall of certain 2020–2023 Escape vehicles equipped with 2.5-liter hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines. Premature engine failure could release oil and/or fuel vapor near ignition sources, creating a potential under-hood fire risk. The recall population included 86,656 Escapes among 125,322 vehicles across the Escape, Maverick, and Corsair nameplates; those figures describe the campaign population, not confirmed failures or a failure rate. NHTSA advised affected owners to park safely and shut the engine off if they heard unexpected engine noises, lost power, or saw or smelled smoke. See the NHTSA consumer alert.
Rank #4
These details apply to the vehicles covered by the campaign, not every Escape hybrid or plug-in hybrid from those years. Use the VIN to determine whether a particular vehicle was included and confirm that any required remedy was completed.
Recent recalls and investigations to check
2020–2021 door-latch investigation
NHTSA closed an investigation into door-latch complaints involving about half a million 2020–2021 Escapes without seeking a recall, according to the Associated Press on January 26, 2024. The investigation had received 593 complaints and three injury reports; those counts are not the probability that an individual Escape will have a defect. Ford offered a customer satisfaction program involving dealer inspection and, depending on damage, repair or replacement. This was a customer satisfaction program, not a recall. Ask whether the specific vehicle qualified and whether the work was done. Associated Press coverage of the investigation closure.

2020–2022 rearview-camera software recall
In July 2025, the Associated Press reported that Ford recall 25S72 covered certain 2020–2022 Escapes for a rearview-camera software issue; dealers would update the software at no charge. The reported 200,061-vehicle total covered multiple Ford and Lincoln models, not Escapes alone. Check the VIN and confirm that the applicable repair was completed. Associated Press coverage of the recall.
Certain 2025 Escapes with suspect EGR valves
A 2026 NHTSA/Ford Part 573 report identifies 10,733 potentially involved 2025 Escapes with suspect exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves installed in 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter engines. That number is the potentially involved population, not confirmed failures, and the report does not mean every 2025 Escape is affected. Check the specific vehicle’s VIN and campaign status. - Find the Escape’s 17-character VIN, usually visible at the lower windshield or on the driver-side door label.
- Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup to check for unrepaired safety recalls on that individual vehicle. The result is more specific than a general search by year, make, and model.
- Ask the seller for repair invoices or dealer documentation showing which recall and service-campaign work has been completed. A recall listing alone does not prove that the remedy was performed.
- Check with a Ford dealer for applicable service campaigns, including customer satisfaction programs that are not recalls.
- Arrange an independent inspection and compare its findings with the maintenance, repair, accident, and mileage records before purchase.
Recall status can change as campaigns and remedies are updated. Run the VIN check again immediately before buying.
How to compare two used Escapes
When two vehicles seem similar, compare the details that complaint-count rankings cannot resolve:

- Campaign status: Check VIN-specific open recalls and request documentation for completed recall or service-campaign work.
- Condition and history: Compare maintenance records, major repairs, mileage, collision or flood history, and independent inspection findings.
- Ownership cost: Consider the asking price alongside the vehicle’s condition and likely repair exposure; a lower complaint count does not guarantee lower costs.
Complaint and campaign histories can help you decide where to investigate, but neither predicts an individual car’s future. Base the purchase on the particular Escape’s records, configuration, inspection, and recall status.
