For a traditional classic, consider the Royal Enfield Classic 650; for a scrambler, the Triumph Scrambler 900; and for retro-sport styling, Kawasaki’s Z650RS or Z900RS ABS. Triumph’s Speed Twin 900 is the roadster-shaped option. All five have documented engine sizes below 1,000cc, but they are not direct substitutes: engine layout, equipment, ergonomics and regional specifications differ.
How these modern classics differ
“Modern classic” covers several riding formats, not one standardized category. Kawasaki describes its RS models as retro-sport motorcycles, Triumph offers a roadster and a scrambler, and Royal Enfield presents the Classic 650 in a traditional classic form. The shortlist below is based on manufacturer-published specifications, not a back-to-back riding test; descriptions of character and positioning should be read as manufacturer claims rather than independent handling assessments.
Five documented choices under 1,000cc
| Model and market context | Engine and published output | Format and documented equipment | Best fit by format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kawasaki Z650RS 649cc; current Kawasaki model page, with market variation caveat |
Parallel twin; output not stated on the cited model page. | Kawasaki calls it retro-sport and describes a slimmer tank and shorter tail as contributing to compact, approachable positioning. This is manufacturer description, not an independent assessment. | Riders who want a compactly positioned retro-sport model. |
| Royal Enfield Classic 650 648cc parallel twin; current Royal Enfield UK page |
Parallel twin; output not stated on the cited page. | Traditional classic form. Royal Enfield says the engine is shared with the Interceptor, while the rest of the motorcycles differ. Specifications may vary by variant. | Riders drawn to traditional classic styling. |
| Triumph Speed Twin 900 900cc; Triumph India specification page |
Liquid-cooled parallel twin; 64 bhp at 7,500 rpm and 80 Nm at 3,800 rpm. | Five-speed transmission, Road and Rain riding modes, and X-ring chain. Triumph also lists genuine accessories for styling, commuting, comfort and protection. | Riders looking for the roadster option and published riding modes. |
| Triumph Scrambler 900 900cc; Triumph US specification page |
Engine layout and output not stated in the cited specification material. | Scrambler format; five-speed gearbox, 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, and Metzeler Tourance tyres. | Riders who prefer scrambler styling and its listed wheel configuration. |
| Kawasaki Z900RS ABS 948cc; 2026 US ABS specification |
Inline four; 115.0 hp at 9,300 rpm and 73.0 lb-ft at 7,700 rpm. | Six speeds, ABS, traction control, power modes, quick shifter and other rider aids; listed seat height is 31.9 inches. | Riders seeking the largest-displacement option here and a more extensive list of specified rider aids. |
Output figures use the units and market context published by each manufacturer. They should not be treated as a controlled comparison: sources differ by market, and no common measurement basis or independent head-to-head result is established here.
Choosing by riding style and priorities
For a traditional classic
The Royal Enfield Classic 650 is the shortlist’s explicitly traditional classic. Its 648cc parallel twin is shared with the Interceptor according to Royal Enfield, but the company says the motorcycles otherwise differ. Confirm the exact variant’s specifications before comparing equipment or fit.

For retro-sport styling
The Z650RS and Z900RS ABS are Kawasaki’s retro-sport choices. The Z650RS page emphasizes compact, approachable positioning through its tank and tail design; that wording is Kawasaki’s own, not proof of a particular rider’s fit. The 2026 US Z900RS ABS has a 948cc inline four and the most detailed published output and rider-aid list in this shortlist.
For a roadster or scrambler format
The Speed Twin 900 is the roadster-shaped alternative, with its India-market page specifying a 900cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, five-speed transmission, and Road and Rain modes. The Scrambler 900’s US specification page identifies its scrambler format, five-speed gearbox, wheel sizes and tyres. Those details help distinguish its setup on paper, but do not establish off-road capability or comparative comfort.

What to check before buying
- Confirm the local model and variant. Kawasaki says equipment and specifications may vary by market; Royal Enfield says Classic 650 specifications can vary by variant. The Triumph figures cited here are market-specific: Speed Twin 900 for India and Scrambler 900 for the United States.
- Check the exact published specification sheet. Only the Z900RS ABS source provides a seat-height figure in this comparison. Weight, local price and availability are not established consistently across the cited pages, so do not infer a ranking from missing values.
- Assess fit in person. Seat height alone cannot establish comfort or reach. If possible, sit on the exact local version and evaluate posture, reach to the controls and how the motorcycle feels at a standstill.
- Compare intended use with equipment. The Speed Twin’s listed modes, the Scrambler’s wheel and tyre details, and the Z900RS ABS’s rider aids are documented features, not proof that one model is better for every commute, trip or road condition.
