The PAL-V Liberty is the clearest road-and-air alternative, while BETA ALIA has the strongest documented operational milestone: a flight-tested organ-transport mission between Virginia and Maryland. Joby, Archer, Electra, Wisk, Ampaire and Elroy Air are advancing aircraft programs through a federal pilot framework, but those programs are aimed at commercial operations rather than retail car sales.
That distinction matters. A roadable aircraft, an electric vertical-takeoff air taxi, a cargo aircraft and a medical-response demonstrator can all be described loosely as flying cars, yet they have different certification paths, infrastructure needs, operators and customer access. This guide separates what exists, what is being tested and what you can realistically buy or book.

What “available” means in the flying-car market
Readers use “available” to mean several different things. Treating them as interchangeable creates misleading shopping lists, so use four separate tests:
- Retail purchase: a certified aircraft can be ordered by an individual through a normal sales process, with a documented delivery path.
- Roadable ownership: one vehicle is designed to operate both on public roads and in the air, subject to road and aviation rules.
- Bookable service: a passenger buys a seat from an operator rather than owning the aircraft.
- Development access: a program is flying tests, demonstrations or government missions but is not open to ordinary customers.
On the information available for 2026, PAL-V is the only named program explicitly presented as a combined road-and-air product. The other programs are aircraft or air-taxi systems. Federal selection, flight testing or a manufacturer’s production statement does not by itself establish that a consumer can purchase a certified aircraft.

Comparison of the leading alternatives
| Program | Roadable or air-only | Primary mission | Documented stage | Normal retail purchase established? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PAL-V Liberty | Road-and-air platform | Personal roadable aviation | PAL-V newsroom reported European approval for its production organisation on September 7, 2026 | No; certification, geography and delivery availability still require verification |
| BETA ALIA | Air-only aircraft | Cargo, medical and regional operations | FAA reported flight-tested organ transport between Virginia and Maryland; additional eIPP flights were planned | No |
| Joby aircraft | Air-only aircraft | Urban and regional passenger air taxi | Named participant in the FAA/DOT eIPP selected in March 2026 | No |
| Archer aircraft, including the Midnight program | Air-only aircraft | Urban passenger air taxi | Named participant in the FAA/DOT eIPP | No |
| Electra aircraft | Air-only aircraft | Regional passenger transport and short-takeoff operations | Named participant in the FAA/DOT eIPP | No |
| Wisk aircraft | Air-only aircraft | Autonomous-flight concept | Named participant in the FAA/DOT eIPP | No |
| Ampaire aircraft | Air-only aircraft | Regional or specialized transport | Named participant in the FAA/DOT eIPP | No |
| Elroy Air aircraft | Air-only aircraft | Cargo and logistics | Named participant in the FAA/DOT eIPP | No |
The table shows why “best” depends on the job. Liberty addresses the road-to-air problem; ALIA has a documented medical logistics mission; the eIPP participants are being evaluated in operational categories rather than sold as personal cars.
PAL-V Liberty: the clearest roadable alternative
PAL-V describes its FlyDrive concept as integrating road and air mobility in one platform. The Liberty is therefore the closest match to the traditional flying-car idea: a vehicle intended to travel on roads and then operate as an aircraft, rather than an air taxi that only departs from an aviation facility.
What the production-organisation approval does—and does not—show
A PAL-V newsroom item dated September 7, 2026 reported European approval for the company’s production organisation. That is a manufacturing and regulatory milestone, not proof that a fully certified Liberty is sitting in a showroom or that deliveries are available in every country. Production-organisation approval should be read alongside the aircraft’s type certification, individual airworthiness, road registration and the rules of the country where an owner intends to drive and fly.
Who might consider it
- A buyer who specifically wants one platform for road travel and personal aviation.
- An owner prepared to manage two regulatory environments instead of treating the vehicle like an ordinary car.
- A pilot or prospective pilot who can arrange legal takeoff and landing locations and comply with local operating limits.
It is not an answer for someone seeking a turn-key commuter that can launch from any street. Even a roadable aircraft needs an approved place to operate in the air, suitable weather and a qualified pilot or operating organisation where required. Before paying a deposit, request the exact certification status for the intended country, the delivery schedule, training requirements, maintenance arrangements and the conditions under which road use is legal.
BETA ALIA: the strongest documented real-world milestone
On July 14, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that BETA and United Therapeutics flight-tested organ transport between Virginia and Maryland using ALIA aircraft. The agency said additional flights under the eIPP were planned. This is a concrete operational use case: a medical mission flown between two states, rather than a concept image or a passenger-service announcement.
Why the mission matters
Organ transport exposes practical requirements that promotional demonstrations can avoid. A useful aircraft must be integrated into the national airspace system, operated safely, dispatched reliably and coordinated with medical logistics. The FAA’s account shows ALIA being used in that context, but it does not establish consumer sales, a passenger booking network or a personal-owner version.

- Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
Best fit
ALIA is most relevant to readers evaluating cargo, medical response and regional aircraft programs. Hospitals, logistics operators and public agencies will care about payload workflows, dispatch procedures, landing-site approvals and operator responsibility. Those details are mission-specific and should be confirmed with the manufacturer and the relevant aviation authority rather than inferred from one flight sequence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJoby: an air-taxi pathway, not a personal flying car
Joby was named as a partner in the FAA and Department of Transportation’s eIPP, the federal pilot framework selected in March 2026. The program category is commercial advanced air mobility, so the logical consumer experience is a booked flight operated through an approved service, not ownership of a roadable vehicle.
For a prospective passenger, the questions are operational: Which city or route will be served? Who will operate the aircraft? Where will passengers board? What local approvals and schedules apply? Federal participation can help answer how the aircraft will be integrated into the airspace, but it does not announce a retail purchase channel or guarantee a launch date in a particular city.
Archer and the Midnight program
Archer was also named in the eIPP selection. The Midnight name is associated with Archer’s passenger-aircraft program, but the available public record here does not establish that a certified Midnight aircraft can be bought by an individual. Treat it as an air-taxi development and service proposition.
A passenger comparing Archer with other eIPP participants should look for the same proof points: certification status, an approved operating partner, vertiport or airport access, a route announcement and a booking mechanism. A manufacturer statement about bringing air taxis to market is an industry signal; it is not the same as a ticket that can be purchased today.
Electra: regional short-takeoff operations
Electra’s eIPP participation places it in the federal testing pathway for advanced air mobility. Electra is particularly relevant when the mission is regional transport and access to locations that may not have a conventional long runway. That does not make the aircraft a road car. It remains an aviation system requiring suitable operating sites, airspace coordination and an approved operator.

For an airport, regional carrier or public agency, the useful comparison is whether the proposed operation can connect communities with existing infrastructure and what local permissions are needed. For an individual buyer, no normal retail purchase has been established.
Wisk, Ampaire and Elroy Air: specialized missions within the same pathway
Wisk
Wisk was named among the eIPP partners, with autonomous flight included in the federal program’s concept range. Autonomy changes the operating model: the central question is not simply whether an aircraft can fly, but how responsibility, supervision, communications and emergency procedures will be handled. The eIPP selection is a testing opportunity, not proof that an autonomous aircraft is available for private ownership.
Ampaire
Ampaire is another named eIPP participant. Its relevance is to regional or specialized air transport within a national effort to test advanced aircraft in real operating environments. Readers should evaluate the intended route, aircraft role, operator and certification plan rather than assume that participation means a consumer product is on sale.
Elroy Air
Elroy Air appears in the eIPP group for cargo and logistics concepts. Cargo operations can use different sites, schedules and risk controls from passenger services. That makes the program important to freight and emergency-supply planners, but it is not a flying car that a household can register and drive.
What the FAA and DOT eIPP changes
On March 9, 2026, the FAA announced selection of eight eIPP projects spanning 26 states. The concepts cover urban air taxis, regional passenger transport, cargo and logistics, emergency medical response, autonomous flight and offshore or energy-sector transport. The breadth is significant: the federal government is testing several operating models at once instead of assuming that one aircraft type will serve every mission.
How to interpret the federal statements
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford described the eIPP as a real-world environment to safely test and integrate the next generation of aircraft into the airspace system. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the projects span 26 states and include urban air taxis, cargo and logistics, emergency response, autonomous flight and energy-sector transport. BETA CEO Kyle Clark said the framework could bring aircraft into commercial operations and establish a blueprint for scaling advanced air mobility. Archer CEO Adam Goldstein called the selection a clear sign that bringing air taxis to market in the United States is a priority.

Why these aircraft are not ordinary cars
The FAA describes advanced air mobility and electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing integration as a regulated aviation task. Aircraft must be integrated into the national airspace system and operated under safety oversight. The DOT’s eIPP notice requires projects to test safe, lawful operations that can scale nationally and internationally.
That framework creates several layers a buyer or passenger must separate:
- Aircraft certification: the design must meet the applicable aviation requirements.
- Production approval: the manufacturer needs an authorised process for building conforming aircraft; PAL-V’s production-organisation announcement addresses this layer, not every other layer.
- Individual airworthiness: the specific aircraft must be accepted for operation.
- Operator approval: a company or pilot must have the permissions, procedures and training required for the mission.
- Infrastructure: airports, vertiports, runways or other approved sites must support takeoff, landing, charging or loading.
- Local permissions: states, cities and site owners may impose additional rules even when federal aviation approvals exist.
A roadable platform adds vehicle registration, road equipment and driving rules to that list. That is why a flying-car purchase cannot be evaluated with a car’s usual checklist alone.
How to check whether a flying-car offer is real
- Identify the product type. Ask whether the offer is a roadable aircraft, an air-only aircraft, a charter seat, a government demonstration or a reservation for a future service.
- Request the certification status in writing. “In development,” “testing,” “selected for a pilot program” and “certified for delivery” are different claims.
- Confirm the jurisdiction. Approval in Europe, the United States or another country may not transfer automatically to the place where you live.
- Ask who operates the flight. A booked air-taxi trip normally depends on an authorised operator; ownership may require a pilot, training and continuing maintenance.
- Verify infrastructure. Get the actual departure and arrival sites, operating hours, weather limits and access rules.
- Check the contract. A refundable reservation, an expression of interest and a purchase agreement provide very different protection.
- Budget for the whole system. Training, insurance, maintenance, storage, road registration and aviation fees can matter as much as the aircraft price, which is not established for the programs covered here.
Which alternative fits each use case?
| Your goal | Most relevant program type | Why | What remains unresolved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive and fly one vehicle | PAL-V Liberty | It is explicitly designed around road and air mobility | Country-specific certification, delivery and operating requirements |
| Book an urban passenger trip | Joby or Archer-style air-taxi service | These programs are oriented toward commercial passenger operations | Routes, launch dates, vertiports, operators and fares |
| Regional transport | Electra or other eIPP aircraft | The federal program includes regional passenger concepts | Aircraft certification and local operating approvals |
| Medical logistics | BETA ALIA | Organ transport has already been flight-tested between Virginia and Maryland | Whether and where similar missions expand |
| Freight | Elroy Air or BETA-type cargo operations | Cargo and logistics are explicit eIPP use cases | Commercial contracts, sites and schedules |
| Autonomous operations | Wisk-style program | Autonomous flight is an eIPP concept | Certification, supervision and public-service model |
What to expect next
The near-term path in the United States is operational testing through the FAA and DOT eIPP, not a sudden nationwide release of personal flying cars. Projects will have to demonstrate safe, lawful operations and work through airspace and local-infrastructure questions. A successful test can support later commercial service, but each aircraft, operator and route still needs its own approvals.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For consumers, the practical sequence is likely to be service first and ownership later: people may encounter an air taxi as a booked trip before a certified personal aircraft becomes broadly purchasable. The PAL-V Liberty remains the notable roadable exception, yet its production-organisation approval should not be mistaken for universal retail availability.
Bottom line for shoppers and passengers
If you want a vehicle you can drive, PAL-V Liberty is the only clearly road-and-air product identified here, and you must verify certification and delivery in your jurisdiction before treating it as buyable. If you want to experience advanced air mobility without owning an aircraft, watch for properly authorised Joby, Archer or other eIPP services, but do not confuse federal selection with a bookable route. If your interest is cargo or medical transport, BETA ALIA provides the clearest documented operational example, while Electra, Wisk, Ampaire and Elroy Air represent specialized pathways under evaluation.
