1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best diesel oil filter is the one approved for your exact engine and maintenance plan—not a universal “diesel” model or a brand-name winner. Start with the engine or equipment manual, then verify the current filter part number in the manufacturer’s catalog or cross-reference before buying. For a standard service schedule, a standard replacement filter may be appropriate; choose an extended-service filter only when the engine maker and your maintenance program support that use.
How to choose a diesel oil filter
- Identify the application. Record the engine make and model, model year, and the equipment or vehicle it powers. Use the engine or equipment manual to find the required oil-filter specification and service interval.
- Confirm the exact part number. Search the filter maker’s official catalog or cross-reference for that application. Match the current part number, and check any superseded-number information in the catalog. A broad diesel label or a filter that looks similar does not establish fitment.
- Match the filter to the service plan. Check whether the application calls for standard service or allows an extended maintenance program. Do not extend oil or filter-change intervals just because a filter is marketed for extended service; follow the engine maker’s maintenance requirements.
- Compare performance claims in context. Note the particle size, efficiency percentage, test notation, and stated comparison basis. A micron figure alone cannot rank filters if the reported efficiency or test context differs.
- Check cost and availability only after fitment is confirmed. Compare the exact compatible part numbers rather than prices for filters that may not fit your engine.
Standard-service and extended-service options
Donaldson describes two distinct lube-filter categories. Its standard filters use cellulose media and are intended for standard service conditions and maintenance schedules. Donaldson Blue uses Synteq synthetic-fiber media and is designed for extended maintenance programs or extreme loads. The categories serve different service needs; the premium label does not by itself establish that a filter is right for every diesel engine.
| Filter category | Media and stated use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Donaldson standard lube replacement filters | Cellulose media; Donaldson describes these as balancing cost and protection for standard service conditions and maintenance schedules. | Exact application, current part number, and the engine maker’s service schedule. |
| Donaldson Blue lube-filter range | Synteq synthetic-fiber media; Donaldson says the range is designed for extended maintenance programs or extreme loads. | Exact application and whether the engine maker’s requirements and maintenance plan support extended service. |
What manufacturer performance figures do—and do not—tell you
Donaldson Blue claims
Donaldson states that Donaldson Blue removes more than 90% of contaminants 10 microns or larger and has double the contaminant-carrying capacity of standard cellulose filters. These are Donaldson’s claims about its product range, not an independent cross-brand comparison. They do not identify the correct part for a particular engine; confirm fitment in Donaldson’s application information.
Fleetguard NanoNet and model-specific figures
Fleetguard says its NanoNet media traps 98.7% of particles as small as 4 microns. Fleetguard’s product pages also show why individual model data matters: LF516 lists primary particle efficiency of 24.60 microns (c) at 95%, while LF17476 lists 50.00 microns (c) at 98.7%. Because the stated particle sizes and efficiencies differ, those figures do not form a simple ranking. Treat them as manufacturer specifications and verify each model against the engine and equipment documentation.

Examples are not universal recommendations
Fleetguard LF17476 and LF516 are examples of specific filter models, not general picks for all diesel engines. Use their manufacturer product pages and the equipment documentation to confirm application before ordering. Likewise, Donaldson’s standard and Blue ranges require an application-specific part-number check.
Do not mistake Baldwin BF46002 for an oil-filter option: Baldwin’s 2023 Form 603 identifies it as a fuel filter for specified Cummins QSK MCRS applications. Its cross-reference table illustrates that part numbers map to defined applications, but it provides no basis for recommending BF46002 as an oil filter.

Where to verify fitment
- Fleetguard describes its filtration products and NanoNet media; use its catalog or application information to check a particular filter.
- Donaldson lube filters describes the standard and Donaldson Blue ranges and their intended service uses.
- Cummins parts and service is a starting point for engine-specific parts and service information.
Catalog pages and cross-references are application aids, not substitutes for the engine or equipment maker’s requirements. If a catalog result conflicts with the manual, confirm the application with the engine or equipment manufacturer or an authorized parts source before installing a filter.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Durable and engineered for optimal performance.
Rank #3
- Runs Any Oil You Do: Works with synthetic, conventional, and blended oils, and the high-flow media keeps oil moving freely on cold mornings when a restrictive filter would make the engine work harder.
- Fits Your 6.7 Powerstroke: Confirmed for 2011 to 2026 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550, and the F-650 and F-750 from 2017 to 2026. Match your model year for the correct oil filter.
- Proven Tough: Rigorously tested for filtration efficiency, capacity, and burst strength, with a heavy-duty metal housing built to handle the oil pressure of a hard-working 6.7 over a full service interval.
- Simple Oil-Change Swap: It spins on during a routine oil change with just a filter wrench. Change it every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, or 10,000 to 15,000 at the maximum, and follow your service schedule first.
- Direct OEM Fit: Spec'd to meet or exceed the factory filter, so it drops in with no changes and keeps your new-vehicle warranty intact. The full cross-reference is in the product details.
