What “under ₹20 lakh” means before you compare cars
The reviewed price pages quote ex-showroom prices. Your on-road total will be higher and varies with state registration, road tax, insurance, handling or optional charges, accessories, financing and dealer offers. Set the budget in writing as either an ex-showroom ceiling or an on-road ceiling; otherwise a car that appears to fit can exceed your limit at registration.

Autocar India’s coverage confirms that almost every major body style and several fuel types are represented in this budget.

For a family that wants SUV space
Start with the Hector, Elevate, Sierra and the lower-priced Scorpio N or Thar OG listings, then remove anything that fails your seating, boot or parking requirements. A “SUV” label does not tell you whether a particular vehicle has the third row, luggage room or exterior dimensions you need. Sit in every intended seating position, load the child seats or luggage you actually carry, and measure your parking space before paying a booking amount.
The Scorpio N is the only model in this shortlist explicitly presented as a three-row SUV, but its price range crosses the cap. Treat the lower-priced versions as the candidates and verify whether their seating and equipment meet your needs. For an electric-car buyer
The BE 6 SPORTEQ listing begins just below ₹20 lakh, while the same published range extends well above it. Confirm the exact entry version, battery and charging equipment included in the quote. Before choosing any electric car, check whether your home or workplace can support charging, whether your regular routes have dependable public chargers, and how much time you can tolerate for charging. The listing evidence does not establish range, charging speed, battery warranty or running cost, so do not infer those from the model name or price.

CNG can make sense when fuel stations are convenient and your daily route is predictable; an automated manual transmission may reduce clutch work in traffic. The cited starting price is not a fuel-economy guarantee and does not prove that every city has immediate stock. Ask about cylinder placement, boot capacity, CNG availability on your routes and the exact waiting time for the chosen colour.

Autocar India identifies petrol, diesel, CNG, strong-hybrid and electric choices in the wider sub-₹20-lakh market. Select by use rather than by the technology label: annual distance, traffic conditions, highway frequency, fuel or charging access, passenger load and the length of time you expect to keep the car. The listings do not provide a like-for-like economy or service-cost comparison, so request written running-cost assumptions instead of treating a fuel type as automatically cheaper.
Cars that have launched recently versus cars you would be waiting for
A launch calendar answers when a manufacturer or listing page expects an unveiling; it does not answer when your dealer can deliver a registered car. CarWale’s October 2026 launch page lists the Honda Elevate and Skoda Slavia as launched on 6 October, with starting prices of ₹11.84 lakh and ₹10 lakh respectively. Those entries are evidence of recent launches, not proof that your preferred trim is in stock or that the displayed price is your city’s on-road total.

If you genuinely cannot wait, compare only cars with a current quotation and a credible delivery commitment. An estimated launch price can change, and a launch-day booking can still create a queue.

How to verify that a “buy now” car is actually obtainable
- Define the deadline. Write the date by which the vehicle must be registered, not merely booked. Include time for loan approval, insurance, registration and any accessories.
- Name the exact vehicle. Specify model, variant, engine or motor, transmission, colour and optional packs. “Any SUV under ₹20 lakh” is too vague for a stock check.
- Contact at least two local dealers. Ask each outlet to state whether the vehicle is physically in stock, in transit or factory-ordered. Request the manufacturing month and vehicle identification details when available.
- Get a written price sheet. It should separate ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes, accessories, extended warranty and finance charges. Confirm which items are optional.
- Ask for a delivery commitment. A verbal “soon” is not a date. Request the expected handover date and the conditions that could move it, such as colour, variant or loan approval.
- Check the cancellation terms. Read the booking form for refund rules, price changes between booking and invoicing, and what happens if the promised date is missed.
- Inspect before registration. Match the vehicle identification number and manufacturing month to the paperwork, inspect panels and tyres in daylight, and confirm the promised equipment is present.
- Reconfirm on-road total before payment. Registration and insurance can change with location or policy choice. Do not treat an ex-showroom listing as the final cheque amount.
Use a cost sheet, not just a sticker price
For each finalist, keep one sheet with the exact ex-showroom price and every on-road line item. Separate statutory registration and road tax from insurance, dealer-added accessories, extended warranty, service packages and finance-related charges. Ask which items are mandatory and which can be declined. This prevents a low headline price from being compared with another car’s fully loaded quotation.

Also record the date on every quotation. Prices, offers and tax calculations can change between booking and invoicing. A written quote should state how a price revision is handled and whether the dealer will honour the quoted amount for the promised delivery period.
A dealer-call routine for a hard deadline
Use the same questions with every outlet so the answers are comparable:
- Do you have the exact model, variant, powertrain, transmission and colour physically in stock?
- If not, is it in transit or factory-ordered, and what is the expected arrival date?
- What is the manufacturing month, and can you share the vehicle identification details before registration?
- What is the ex-showroom price today, and what is the complete on-road total in my registration location?
- Which accessories, insurance products or warranty extensions are optional?
- What date will you write on the order form for handover, and what happens if that date slips?
- What are the booking cancellation and refund terms if the vehicle is delayed or the price changes?
Ask for the answers by email or message, not only by telephone. A written response will reveal whether “available” means an allocated vehicle, a dealer promise or an unconfirmed factory order. Contacting two or more outlets also exposes differences in colour, manufacturing month, offers and realistic delivery dates without treating either dealer’s estimate as a national waiting-period figure.

When two current cars both fit
Use tie-breakers in this order: first, the car that meets the registration deadline with a documented vehicle; second, the one whose exact trim stays below your chosen budget after mandatory charges; third, the one that matches your normal passenger, luggage and parking needs; and fourth, the powertrain that fits your fuel, CNG or charging access.
