There is no single all-trim winner. The 2025 Subaru Forester is the clearest choice if physical audio volume and tuning knobs matter most. The 2025 Mazda CX-5 is the strongest documented choice for physical temperature controls. A Honda CR-V from the 2023-generation launch offers physical audio controls on specified trims, but that evidence should not be assumed to apply to every newer CR-V. For 2026, Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 descriptions show climate functions moving into screen-based interfaces, while available 2026 Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage specifications do not establish whether their center-stack controls are tactile.
Choose by the functions you want to operate by feel—audio, temperature, fan speed, airflow mode, or defrost—and verify the exact model year and trim in a current cabin photo or vehicle. “Dual-zone automatic climate control” describes the HVAC capability, not whether its buttons and dials are physical.

What “physical buttons and knobs” should mean when you shop
Compact-SUV shoppers use “physical controls” to mean several different things. A vehicle can retain a volume knob while moving every climate function to a touchscreen, or it can provide temperature dials but make fan speed and airflow mode screen-based. Treating those arrangements as equivalent produces a misleading best-of list.
Evaluate the controls in separate categories:
- Audio volume: a dedicated rotary knob or hard button that changes volume without opening a menu.
- Audio tuning: a physical tuning knob or seek buttons for changing stations or tracks.
- Temperature: a dedicated dial or buttons for the driver and passenger set points.
- Fan and airflow mode: hard controls for fan speed, vents, recirculation and related settings.
- Defrost: directly reachable front- and, where fitted, rear-defrost controls.
- Screen dependence: how many of those actions require touching a display.
The evidence for the vehicles below is not a laboratory safety study. No cited source establishes a percentage reduction in crashes or distraction from physical controls. These recommendations describe documented interfaces and identify where the documentation stops.

Best for physical audio: 2025 Subaru Forester
The 2025 Forester has the strongest documented case for shoppers who primarily want to turn a knob for sound and station changes. Consumer Reports’ Forester material specifically praises Subaru for retaining physical volume and tuning knobs. That is a useful distinction from a vehicle that offers only steering-wheel switches or an on-screen slider.
The Forester is not a fully physical-control SUV. The same review observation says most climate controls occupy the lower portion of the center screen. Physical temperature buttons and defrost controls are the limited tactile climate functions specifically identified in the available description. Fan speed and airflow operation should therefore be checked in the exact vehicle rather than inferred from the presence of the audio knobs.
Who should choose it
- Drivers who change audio volume or stations frequently and want a fixed control location.
- Owners who can accept using the lower display for much of the climate interface.
- Shoppers willing to confirm the screen’s reach and visibility from the driving position.
What to test
- Turn the volume knob with the vehicle stationary, then confirm that it remains easy to locate without looking.
- Use the tuning control for both radio stations and media tracks.
- Set temperature, fan speed and airflow mode while wearing gloves if that reflects your normal use.
- Find front and rear defrost controls and note whether either function opens an additional screen.
Best documented physical climate interface: 2025 Mazda CX-5
The 2025 CX-5 owner’s manual documents a physical temperature-control dial and climate switches. That makes it the clearest candidate in this evidence set for a shopper whose priority is changing temperature without navigating a display.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The manual’s wording establishes that turning the temperature dial adjusts temperature; it does not, by itself, establish that every trim has identical hardware or that fan and airflow controls are all separate physical switches. Audio-control details are also not established by the cited manual excerpt. Check the center stack in the exact vehicle and confirm which controls are shared with the infotainment system.
Why the model year matters
Mazda’s 2026 materials describe a redesigned, touchscreen-centered interface in which climate control and vehicle settings are centralized on the display. That is a major change from the 2025 manual’s physical temperature dials and switches. A dealer listing that simply says “CX-5” is not enough to determine the interface.

Best use case
Select the 2025 CX-5 when tactile temperature adjustment is more important than having the newest model year. If you are considering a 2026 CX-5, treat the climate controls as screen-based unless a current cabin inspection proves otherwise.
Honda CR-V: useful physical-audio evidence, but from an earlier generation
Honda’s cited launch description for the 2023-generation CR-V identifies trim-specific audio hardware. EX and Sport trims were described with physical volume and tuning knobs. EX-L and Sport Touring were described with a physical volume knob. Those details make the CR-V relevant to a used-vehicle or remaining-inventory search focused on audio controls.
This is not a blanket statement about every CR-V. The explicit knob evidence comes from an earlier-generation launch announcement, while newer specifications do not automatically carry that arrangement forward. The source also does not establish physical temperature, fan, airflow or defrost controls for those trims.
How to use the CR-V evidence
- Identify the vehicle’s generation and model year from the window sticker or vehicle identification number.
- Match the trim to the documented EX, Sport, EX-L or Sport Touring description rather than assuming all trims share one dashboard.
- Operate the climate system in person; the audio knob does not predict the HVAC layout.
- For a newer CR-V, require a current official interior image or direct inspection before calling it a physical-control choice.
2026 Toyota RAV4: HVAC controls at the screen’s lower edge
Toyota’s 2026 announcement describes HVAC controls integrated along the lower portion of a larger touchscreen. That placement may make the controls easier to reach than a deeply buried menu, but they remain screen-based controls. A screen border, shortcut row or always-visible climate strip should not be described as a physical button or dial.
The cited 2025 RAV4 page concerns the previous model year’s multimedia and safety offerings and should not be used to claim the 2026 interface is unchanged. The available 2026 description does not establish a physical audio volume or tuning knob, nor does it provide a complete account of defrost hardware.

- Pull back model car: Place the toy car on the ground, hold down its body and pull it back, it will drive forward. Very interesting.
- Awesome Gift: It is an ideal gift toy model car for children, also great to use for collection and decoration.
When the RAV4 may still fit
The 2026 RAV4 can suit a shopper whose definition of convenience includes a consistently placed, lower-screen HVAC area rather than fully tactile controls. It does not fit a strict requirement for physical climate buttons unless a particular trim proves otherwise through current inspection.
2026 Mazda CX-5: do not assume the 2025 controls carry over
The 2026 CX-5 is the clearest warning against using a model name without a year. Mazda describes climate control and vehicle settings as centralized in the touchscreen for the 2026 interface. That conflicts with the 2025 owner’s manual evidence for physical temperature dials and climate switches because the vehicle has changed.
If you need physical HVAC controls, compare a documented 2025 vehicle directly with the 2026 cabin. Do not rely on a used-car listing, a generic equipment line or a photograph of a different trim. Confirm temperature, fan, airflow and defrost operation one by one.
2026 Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage: equipment listed, tactile layout unknown
The available 2026 Tucson specifications list dual automatic temperature control and steering-wheel controls. Those facts establish climate capability and steering-wheel functions, not physical center-stack buttons or knobs. The cited material does not document the main HVAC interface.
The 2026 Sportage features page lists dual-zone automatic temperature control and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Again, neither specification proves that temperature, fan or airflow controls are physical. A large display can coexist with a few hard buttons, touch-sensitive strips or no dedicated HVAC hardware at all.

How to evaluate either model
- Look for a current, trim-specific dashboard photograph showing the center stack powered on and powered off.
- Ask the seller to demonstrate temperature, fan speed, airflow mode and both defrost functions.
- Confirm whether audio volume is controlled by a knob, steering-wheel switch, touch control or a combination.
- Record the exact model year and trim on the purchase worksheet so a later vehicle substitution does not change the interface.
How to choose the right SUV by the control you care about
| Your priority | Most defensible starting point | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical volume and tuning | 2025 Subaru Forester | Both audio knobs are specifically documented. | Most climate operation remains on the screen. |
| Physical temperature adjustment | 2025 Mazda CX-5 | The owner’s manual documents temperature dials and climate switches. | Do not apply this evidence to the redesigned 2026 CX-5. |
| Used or remaining-inventory CR-V with audio knobs | Specified 2023-generation EX or Sport | The launch description identifies volume and tuning knobs on those trims. | Current-year carryover is not established; EX-L and Sport Touring are described with a volume knob only. |
| Newest model with a lower, reachable HVAC area | 2026 Toyota RAV4 | Toyota places integrated HVAC controls along the bottom of the screen. | The controls are still screen-based. |
| 2026 Tucson or Sportage | Only after direct inspection | Official material confirms climate equipment but not tactile layout. | Specifications cannot answer the physical-controls question. |
A practical inspection procedure before you buy
Use this sequence at a dealership, rental lot or private-party viewing. It prevents a single volume knob from creating an overly favorable impression.
- Write down the identity. Record model year, generation, trim and powertrain. Interface hardware can change between years and trims.
- Start with audio. Locate volume and tuning controls with the screen off if possible. Test radio, Bluetooth or another media source.
- Set both temperatures. Change the driver and passenger settings independently. Note whether each adjustment uses a dial, button, touch target or a menu.
- Test fan speed. Move from the lowest to highest setting and count the interactions required. A physical temperature dial does not guarantee a physical fan control.
- Change airflow mode. Select face, floor and defrost combinations. Check whether the setting remains visible or disappears into a submenu.
- Operate front and rear defrost. Verify the symbols and location. If rear defrost is not fitted, record that rather than assuming it is present.
- Check reach and glare. Adjust the seat to your driving position and operate every control without leaning forward. Examine the screen in daylight and at night.
- Photograph the cabin. Keep a trim-specific reference image with your notes so a later quote or delivery vehicle can be checked against the inspected dashboard.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing automatic climate control with physical climate controls
“Dual-zone,” “automatic temperature control” and similar equipment terms describe what the HVAC system can do. They do not specify the interface. Require a control photograph or an in-person demonstration.
Calling a screen shortcut a button
A touch target at the bottom of a display may be easy to reach, but it has no physical travel or tactile boundary. Describe it as screen-based so the reader understands the trade-off.
Mixing model years
The CX-5 demonstrates the risk: physical temperature dials are documented for 2025, while Mazda describes centralized touchscreen climate functions for 2026. The RAV4 likewise has separate 2025 and 2026 interface descriptions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssuming one trim represents the whole range
The CR-V evidence is explicitly trim-specific. A knob on one trim cannot be generalized to every trim, and a photograph of a high-grade model may not represent the base dashboard.

Counting steering-wheel controls as center-stack controls
Steering-wheel buttons can improve access to audio or cruise functions, but they do not replace a physical temperature dial or defrost switch. List them separately when comparing cabins.
What to expect from a physical-control cabin
Physical controls offer a stable location and a tactile boundary. You can often adjust a knob by feel, which is especially useful when the vehicle is moving or when the display is showing navigation. Their presence does not guarantee that every function is physical; many cabins combine a few hard controls with a large screen.
Screen-centered systems can consolidate settings, support software changes and present more information in a small area. Their drawbacks for this shopping brief are the need to look at a display, the possibility of additional taps and the risk that an interface changes between model years. Decide whether your priority is one or two essential physical controls or a fully tactile HVAC panel; the shortlist changes accordingly.
Bottom-line buying advice
Start with the 2025 Subaru Forester if audio knobs are non-negotiable, and start with the 2025 Mazda CX-5 if a physical temperature dial is the deciding feature. Consider a 2023-generation Honda CR-V only after matching the documented trim and generation. Treat the 2026 Toyota RAV4 and 2026 Mazda CX-5 as screen-centered climate designs, and do not classify the 2026 Tucson or Sportage as tactile-control SUVs until a current, trim-specific inspection proves the layout. The safest purchase decision is the one based on the exact dashboard you will receive, not a model name or generic climate-equipment line.
